The songwriting isn't particularly fantastic, though it has plenty of deviations to keep you interested, but they definitely took the sound of their NWOBHM heroes and added a dose of punk-inspired intensity that would prove an invaluable influence. Plus it's loaded with classic Mustaine riffs. That said, I think Slayer did it better that year.

I know a lot of plebs chose Strawberry Jam as their favorite Animal Collective album so that they can enjoy pop AC without feeling like a pleb for their favorite being Merriweather, but as someone who thinks the best era for Animal Collective was Campfire Songs through the People EP, I think that overall, Merriweather rivals Strawberry Jam. There are certain aspects in which I like Strawberry Jam more than Merriweather Post Pavilion, mostly the exciting sonic attack (I don't think there's one moment on Merriweather that's as fun as hearing a demonic voice talking about bigfoot creatures being cut off by a blast of crunchy, distorted guitars) but Merriweather Post Pavilion is overall a more cohesive and triumphant record that feels like they're on top of the world, having come full circle from sounding like drugged out, primal kids who emerged from the wilderness, and Strawberry Jam sounds like them coming into form so that they could do that. Once the whole pleb/patrician thing no longer becomes an issue, it becomes apparent that Merriweather is the superior album as far as their pop era. Still though, I think ODDSAC is better than both.

Really? Cause I think it's their best work on a lot of levels. Not only did they master their sound on a sonic level with that album, but the compositional aspect is brilliant, in a subtle way. Just take Did You See the Words, how Avey spits out surreal lyrics that sound simultaneously romantic and bizarre, with a drum beat that builds in intensity with the lyrics, all leading up to the climax of the song. The whole album is brilliant, Avey Tare painting abstract images of emotion while the rest of the band fuses early 20th century impressionism with modern pop. The lyrics manage to be both beautiful and uncomfortable, with Avey Tare seeming to approach the concept of love from the perspective of a child who has just had it's sexual awakening. It felt like they had taken their early approach to music to it's furthest point, which is why they were wise to take a completely different approach afterwords.
