Yeah I definitely want the Sample rather than the Beat. It's a bit annoying to have the extra step with the phone to sample things but you're right about how it would be a pain to edit the samples otherwise. I think I'll get the Keys and the Sample and a 1994 Korg keyboard I found on cl and I can use that as a controller for the keys and on it's own to work on my piano skillz. Still don't really know if I want the keys or bass though, right now I'm leaning toward the keys.
Thanks for the help everyone.

that moment at :45 seconds is magical
main thing I'd add is little chirpy complimentary melodies during the bridge but that's something that I'm really partial to as far as happy hardcore stuff goes, I also really love throwing in a jungle break with a filter sweep on the last measure of a phrase to enhance the sense of speed a track has

where is a good place to buy royality free drum kits? do the pris use sample packs or do they make their drums and if so, how?
>>

yea I find it's a lot harder to successfully skip a beat than it is to add one and even then you need to do it at the right time and telegraph it properly. I'd also edit the drum buildup cause it sounds a little rigid as is
>>
>>65092914
desu I mostly use drum samples from kb6 (google it, lots of classic drum machine samples) and then process the shit out of them. sample magic also has some ok packs depending on what you're looking for. I also make a lot of drum sounds out of samples I get from youtube videos or freesound.org by layering stuff and adding effects.

For anyone "struggling to find their voice" I have some advice. Start making things in the most roundabout and obscure ways possible. Even if you don't have any creativity, the weirder you can make your methods of deriving sounds, the better. It will end up being unwieldy and an utter bitch to work with, but you'll definitely sound unique.

Anyone got a rec for cool lo-fi synth vsts? looking for some evil ass basses, and something sweet and ethereal.
>>
>>65090012
Dammit
>>
>>65096937
No softsynth is really inherently "lo-fi," any subtractive synth will get the job done for that vintage feel though some sound better than others (I recommend Diva as an all around solution), clever effects processing is what you really need.

Look into bitcrushers, saturators, distortion, tape delays, etc etc. I really like D16's plugins (esp. Decimort), TB-ReelBus, PSP VintageWarmer, and Plogue Chipcrusher; if you're using Ableton you can also use Legowelt's SMACKOS Tape Station which is awesome, along with Cabinet, Erosion, and Multiband Dynamics which are built in. Learning tricks within your daw like emulating shitty timestretching and pitch bending helps too. You should also pick up some samples of tape hiss and throw those into your recordings, there are lots of customizable racks and loops for that if you google em.

Another tip would be to study the hardware you're trying to emulate and learn what makes them sound "lo-fi" so you can kind of emulate that with an effect chain. For example, old romplers and samplers would often have low sample rates, meaning they can't replicate high frequencies as well, so a lot of them would have a circuit just to "fix" that by exciting those frequencies; this is why a lot of old romplers sound really glassy and airy. Knowing that info you could add a bitcrusher to fuck up the sample rate, a little bit of an eq shelf to subdue the leftover high frequencies, and an exciter to artificially boost them back up and give you that glossy, artificial high end. Honestly most DAWs now come with a lot of the tools you need to make convincing lo-fi stuff, you just need to really learn them.
>>
>>65093873

or just sample everything in iris and sound completely different

high learning curve though, to not get noise.
>>
>>65095698
Its what I started since I was mainly learning actual recording and mixing as opposed to electronic production, but I felt comfortable with it so just stuck with it. Its workflow agrees with me I guess, haven't ever really had issues with it
>>
lol. all of this is new territory for me.

i'm trying to full on get into recording. reading manuals, watching tutorials, etc...

i'm working on this punk, lo-fi, industrial, noise band/project.

i plan on starting out by covering big black's 'fist of love'

i know your guy's stuff sounds cleaner and electronic-y, and i know i still need a lot of work, but i was wondering if you guys could give some pointers on something i maybe haven't caught?

currently i'm using a volca sample and distorted bass routed into a mixer/interface.

https://clyp.it/zcclt4x2
>>
>>65090763
Keys or bass they both do both really, so you can't go wrong with either. I'll probably end up getting a keys at some point. I think the keys has a chorus effect so that might be handy too if you don't have any effects to run it through.
>>
>>65096937
Check or some of the Rythmic Robot instruments. They are all sampled from old gear. Tubes and wires is made from old valve test generators which is pretty nice sounding, loopscape is a synth made from sampled tape loops, shortwave is made from samples of shortwave radios and grit kit is a nice sounding drum machine.

Hi dude
/prod/ is not all restricted to electronic music it's just that it's the crowd that gathered here.

I've no problem with a bit of lo-fi but your guitar sound a bit unprofessional and lack of punch. Maybe i've got this feeling because i'm more of a godflesh guy than a big black guy. To achieve a better ( while still agressive and lo-fi ) sound i think you should doule ( or more ) the guitar line maybe with different sounds.
I think your reverb bursts are a bit too unsubtle and would benefit from being more progressive.
Your choice of drum sounds is quite nice but you would be better with a really agressive snare.

Really depends on what else they're going through

The first one is going through a Lexicon MPX550 which is a pretty decent unit. Second one is going through a fucking Big Sky which is pretty fantastic

That being said the tx81z is still a real nice synth and I love it. I love fm8 too but sometimes it's really nice to be able to process offboard with analog shit. A tx81z through analog filters or a filterbank is so killer
>>
>>65100312
would you say it's worth the investment? they're crazy cheap on ebay. I don't normally invest in gear (just have a microbrute se and a microkorg) but ffs the pads in those videos just sound so rich, the patches in FM8 have almost no bass whatsoever and some of the more "shimmery" ones just sound fucking noisy even after putting them thru reverb. I can get them to sound KIND OF close with a saturator and playing with fm8's analogue slider but it really depends on the patch.
>>
>>65100386
If you've got enough hardware already I'd say the cost is trivial for what you get. I was really holding out for a tx802 but I got mine for 35 dollars so I figured it was a no-brainer

Like I said through even the shittiest analog filters and especially distortions it just works so well. Some of my favorite patches include a midiverb, ms20 filter as the analog filter, and either a muff or some other OD/distortion

I particularly like how it pairs with midiverbs as well especially how they don't really get muddy even with a 15s dark delay

Combine that with the fact that patch editors and librarians are just so easy to use it's such a small piece. I used to patch fm8 to outboard effects to get it across and that worked with a little bit of cleanup but like you said a lot of stuff gets noisy easily
>>
>>65100456
might need to add a midiverb to the shopping list as well since they seem pretty cheap too. is there a model you'd recommend? also any other recommendations for cheap outboard stuff would be cool too. I'm moving to a new place soon so I'll finally have room for gear, which I'm pretty excited about. Aside from those two things I mentioned I've been in the box this whole time.
>>
>>65100569
I've got two original midiverbs and a midiverb 2

I don't really know anything about the later models and they're really not the best since they're all pretty much untweakable presets but being able to control them via midi and having them sound pretty dang decent in quite a few presets was enough for me

Dont spend too much on one as you could just put that towards a better reverb like a lexicon or something but its not hard to pick up midiverbs for 60-80 bucks

Also NEVER buy a midiverb 1 without the power cable. They're impossible to find three pin 16v monstrosities and they're hard as fuck to find

As for other cheap outboard stuff I've used boss reverbs I usually use for guitar very well. I'd highly suggest getting a nice analog filterbank but if push comes to shove you can use a korg monotron filter for lots of neat things. I think legowelt puts his dx-5 through a monotron, which is really funny

In my experience tuning drums only really applies to an actual acoustic drum kit in a professional studio. In terms of electronic production if it doesn't sound right just find another sample or process (with EQ etc) your current one.

The quick version is:

1. Take voice sample and add a shitload of long reverb. I used FL Convolver and put a reverb sample in there that was appropriately long - it doesn't need to have a lot of echo, it just needs to drag and a lot of the FL presets didn't have this, so I had to mess with it to get something long enough to create the "sucking" effect when you set it up right.

2. Reverse the sample once you apply the reverb.

3. Record that reversed sample to a separate track

4. Take the original voice sample and reverse it back to original and set the mods up how you want. I used a much smaller reverb for the actual track once it was back where I wanted - along with some other stuff. I'd have to load FL Studio but I also pitched most of the "Despair" voice samples down about 50 cents and also emphasized bass on the EQ to make it deeper.

5. Take the recorded sample (that you made in number 3) and Reverse it. Because it was recorded in reverse, you've now reversed it back to normal. You shouldn't have to apply many effects to this except maybe EQ and compression (if you record it uncompressed). In FL it helps to have 3 different channels set up with all the preset effects so all you're doing is putting the voice clip in the recording channel, recording it, flipping it back and slapping the Voice track into its channel and Reversed Reverb track into it's channel.

6. Push the Reversed Reverb sample ahead of the voice track by about .5 seconds, depending on how long you want it to draw in.

Congratulations you now sound like the Chaos Announcer (minus the amazing voice):

Maxed out flange-like effect pitched super low and layed under the voice track. Just make sure the flange isn't wobbling a lot (set it up with a narrow phase / frequency variance) because you just want it to rumble, not pitch all over the place.

Bass boost EQ and pitch everything down until it's low enough. Lay the main voice track over the effect track and make sure its clear enough to understand.

I figured out a new genre. I'll call it, like, new art electronic music, or something like that. Basically, I make a barely mixed piece and it is up to the listener to use his/her imagination and "mix" the song in their hand to make it sound better.

use ableton glue compressor full parallel on your drum bus, bam instantly sounds better
"driven drum machines" samples are really loud, and easy to find on the net, also

>>

Not the guy you replied to but the most accessible daws are FL studio and Ableton, because of the sheer amount of information available on them.
If you're looking for a rompler (sample based vst), the industry standard consists of omnisphere and eastwest. I personally prefer Alchemy though, because I like the way it handles modulation.
If you can't afford something, consider a "demo" version until you can.
>>
>>65104848
Drums are good. Could possibly bring the boost on the bass a bit higher, maybe go for closer to 500 rather than what sounds like 100-200 you've already done. Dropping the guitar chords' volume a couple dB and possibly sending them to a very soft short reverb could give them a more ambient feel if you want, but as it is they sound slightly too dominant in the mix. You could maybe back off whatever filters you have on the higher guitar a tad in the higher range, it could do with a bit more sparkle. These are all honestly fairly nitpicky, sounds pretty good.

Sounds pretty good desu, well-mixed on my monitors. However, I would bring that double bass up in those parts at the end, its almost inaudible under most other things. I would suggest leaving compression alone with it and maybe just give it a touch of EQ (boosts here and there, sparingly) to give a nice tone. Terrible waste of the instrument to leave it as low as it is.

put a reverb with extremely short delay and all reflect/no diffuse at about 30-40% on the piano so it doesnt sound like you warped it heaps

Midiverb 4 is fully editable and can be configured as two separate processors - either dual-mono where each of the two inputs feeds a separate mono processor, each one then outputting through a single output jack, or dual mono-to-stereo where each of the two inputs feeds a separate stereo processor and the processors are summed to a single stereo signal at the output jacks.

Damn, not trying to hate but I forgot how dated this track sounds now. Either way that song is mainly just a vocal and synth sample with a really obvious fade where they loop, lots of reverb and some bitcrushing. Just make a noisy synth patch, bounce it, load it into a sampler and tell it to loop then adjust the loop to where it sounds kinda like that. As for the drums most any hip hop kit will work, just throw some lowpass filters on em and get clever with the EQ. As for where to start download a DAW and just fuck around, watch youtube tutorials every day, etc etc. There's a bunch of youtube tutorials on how to get that Clams Casino sound now too.

flume and xxyyxx both mostly use fl studio and sylenth presets iirc. they also typically stick to very simple patches; for that style of music don't bother downloading any crazy supersynths like Diva or Omnisphere. just fuck around till you get something you like. I know that probably feels like shitty advice but there's really not a whole lot to their sound. clams casino is mostly just clever effects processing but nothing you can't achieve with what probably came built in with your DAW. just learn the ins and outs of your effects units and you'll start to get an instinctual grasp on how each sound is built. also, since like 2011 thousands and thousands of producers have been trying to imitate those styles, there are hundreds of youtube videos, sample packs, and synth presets all built around imitating that sound.

it sucks to hear when you're first getting into producing (back when I started I really wanted to emulate nujabes, el-p, madlib, and flying lotus) but most producers don't really have a quick and easy "secret" to their sound. they get there the same as anyone else, just fucking around until they find something they like.

>>
>>65113115
nah people hate on fruity loops more for its history than its actual usability. it's actually a very solid DAW and while it doesn't do anything better than any other DAW, it has an easier learning curve than almost any other workstation out there.

you might find this uninteresting but here's a little history lesson: because it was cheap as hell, easy to use, windows compatible, and had a generous trial, it led to an EXPLOSION of shitty amateurs and thus got a reputation for being the DAW of choice FOR shitty amateurs. it is and always has been extremely easy to pirate as well, making it indispensable for producers with no cash; oftentimes guys from the hood wanting to make beats for themselves or their friends or kids with a laptop and parents that can't justify dropping hundreds on a piece of software that they don't understand. this is why FL is always associated with shitty hip hop beats, generic trance stuff, etc etc. people hate on it not because it's a bad DAW, but because it was disruptive to the market and completely shattered any bar of entry production had left. most of the hate you hear about fruity loops is just perpetuated by untalented elitists who are butthurt that they aren't special anymore and that anyone can make music now, even people who probably shouldn't be.

really what it comes down to is if FL studio fits your workflow and suits your needs as far as function goes. a daw is a daw is a daw. I started with fruity loops, moved onto reason, and now I've been using ableton for about five years because it just clicked with me and I find it easier to achieve the results I want.

>>65113081

Also, like I mentioned earlier I'd recommend replacing some of those drum hits with samples from freesound.org or something; stuff like lighters igniting, knives being sharpened, twigs breaking, cardboard boxes being kicked, and more weird stuff are really easy to find and will add a lot of texture and a more organic feel to your sound. If you want you can even go outside and record some of this stuff with your phone, play with effects, and make some drums of your own. never feel guilty about using "bad equipment" or sourcing your sounds from odd places. burial has sampled synth demo videos, videogame sound effects, random youtube acapellas, and more. get creative, anything that makes a sound is an instrument waiting to be played if you want to emulate that style. I'd also try experimenting with eq and filtering to give you that "submerged" sound and maybe add some bitcrushing and saturation to grit things up a lil.

>>65113900
honestly tons of pros use it, half the ones that do just know that it's more about your creativity and skill than your gear or software so they don't see a reason to bring it up.

Ive heard a few people say that VA is not half as good as the real thing but the demo's i've heard sound amazing
Recording onto a Tascam 32SD then on to a final mixdown in Ableton
The no MIDI Sync capability on the 32SD is a killer but it might help me break out of loops and humanize my output

Are you me? I've been trying to find some darker synth shit like the TX81Z and I don't know if there's a specific synth in mind that can do this kind of stuff

Enough said.

Just shut up and save face, or sperg out more about how you're totally not here to advertise. Also, if you use a name, stick with it.

Anyone in /prod/ got a Minilogue yet?

Or perhaps try not to blatantly use /prod/ as your advertising platform. Sounds pretty easy if you ask me.

Why don't you lurk in /prod/ for a thread or two before posting? It's not really hard to use clyp.it

Why not upload a clyp with a link to your soundcloud in the description instead? The tracks not too bad.

Why are you sticking around to continue whining if you don't like the rules?
Why bother apologizing if you're just going to be a complete ass about it?
