What are some good books for:
learning how to play?
Improv techniques?
Genre playing?
Bad habits to avoid?
Good youtube channels?
Good websites?

Best keyboards for different price points?
>>
Oh shit i need this. I have an old korg keyboard that works i just need to set it up and learn to play
>>
For sheet music, the easiest thing to do is google title + pdf
>>
I use two fingers and play really fast

For basic digital pianos, look at the Casio Privia PX160, the Korg SP 280, or the Roland FP 30. They're in the $500USD-$700USD range.

I don't recommend bothering with anything under the $500 range, they're almost never worth owning, unless you just need something simple for electronic stuff or a production studio.
>>
>>65084447

Yes, but some of us want to develop some fluidity in our playing. Also, some of us don't have the skill to play any song we want; we're trying to get there.
>>
http://profile.pouria.net/AlfredsPianovol1.pdf

Good place to start for beginners. Will teach you basic technique and how to read music. I recommend downloading it in case it ever gets taken down
>>
I just found some guy selling a privia px-400r on craigslist for 150 dollars.

He hasnt responded to my text message.
>>
You guys think this one might be good?http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YPG-235-76-Key-Portable-Premium/dp/B003FRMRC4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

What are your goals with the instrument? Personally I'm extremely biased against keyboards that don't have hammer action keys (unless it's an organ or synth, in which case it's normal not to).

If you just want something to mess around with then that's probably fine, but if you want to play piano seriously, record keyboard parts, or gig live, then you'll need something else.

I only started playing keys a couple months ago, I have a digital piano to learn on (pic related) and I'm using Béla Bártok's Mikrokosmos to learn sightreading. It's a book with a large series of progressive pieces ranging from easy as fuck to pretty damn complicated.
>>
>>65084839
thanks ive been teaching myself lately and I think this will help
>>
>>65085086
was just thinking about using it to mess around as I play other instruments too but I may like to record with it.
>>
Both a good privia 400r and 150 on craigslist and no one responding. Shiiiiiiit.

Really really good deals but Im getting impatient and eyeing that 160.
>>
Is there a program for note learning?

I found a guitar tuner in VB that I could modify for piano and show a note at a time. When you play the note it would go to another one.

After solving 10 in <1 second each it would do flats and sharps. After 10 more it would change octaves.

Anything out there like this yet?

The UI on this thing sucks, but once you figure it out it's very effective.

http://www.kraftmusic.com/digital-pianos-and-keyboards/home-pianos/?bundle_product=No&key_num=88&limit=50&price=1%2C1000

Here, I refined a list and saved the link. If you're looking for a good digital piano/keyboard for under $1000USD, this is a good list. All of them have 88 weighted action keys.
>>
Guys, keeps posting resources. I'd really like for this to be a common thread.

On a second note, any 88(or with a decent range of keys) weighted keyboards that could work well as a MIDI interface, as well as regular piano practice?
>>
>>65085677
As far as I know almost all the 88 key digital pianos can be used with MIDI interface, so it'll probably just come down to whichever one you like best that fits in your price range.
>>
>>65085344
Eww...well I'm building it anyways and going to open source it. Probably better to play through a MIDImapper instead of a browser image.
>>
>>65085750

But what allows for best flexibility in regards to shaping sound with knobs
>>
Piano is so hard
>>
>>65086917
At that point I think you're going to be dealing mostly with the stuff in your DAW. If you want a lot of onboard control of the sound, you should get a workstation.

Can someone compile some good pianos/keyboards and some resources for non-classical players? (most of this stuff is classical-geared)

Thank you. So much. Do you guys have any tips for a beginner?
>>
>>65089293
Nice. Going to look through all that tonight.
>>
>>65089427
Don't get discouraged if it's difficult at first. Piano is a challenging instrument. Learn your scales, learn your chords, isolate your weak points, and work on them. Another key is to figure out a sense of direction musically--what kind of music do you want to play? If you want to do classical, that's going to take you down a different path than jazz, or rock keyboards.
>>
Have you ever saved dozens of threads full of valuable mega links, resources, and recommendations because it said they were archived only to find out they're all gone?

I'm going to throw up haha

i have nothing to contribute but i would like this too.
>>
>>65090324
For good digital pianos with quality keybeds under $1000, see: >>65085549

For workstations, anything from Korg, Roland, Yamaha, or Kurzweil will serve you well.

Stage pianos: Roland RD 800, Yamaha CP4, Kurzweil Artis, Kurzweil Forte, Nord Stage, Korg SV1

Synths: Don't even know where to start, desu. Synths are a deep field.

For jazz instruction, check out Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book.

Thanks anon, I was looking through the resources. Classical, I primarily enjoy Brahms, Chopin, Liszt.

>I'm selling a keyboard at this price
Hi, can I buy the keyboard?

>no response

These people are really going to make me buy new, aren't they?
>>
What's a good beginners keyboard? I don't have a ton of money to spend, and I was thinking about Williams Allegro, but some of the reviews worry me

I was looking to get something cheap and upgrade if I git gud
>>
>>65091891
Define cheap. What's your budget?
>>
>>65092505
400 is my cap I guess
>>
>>65090258
the current pasta, >>65089293
is more oriented towards piano in general. We need some more synth resources, some electronica and other keyboard-specific stuff to add to the pasta

>tfw used to be pretty good at the piano
>could play a bunch of etudes by Chopin, hardest being the revolutionary at age 13
>for some reason stopped playing and picked up guitar instead
>got accepted into music school but went into engineering instead
>haven't practice for 5 years
>can't even play fantaisie-impromptu properly now

I feel like that guy from that stupid anime. I remember the last piece I tried to learn was that Liszt piece. What's it again? Dreams of love or something. Liebstrueam?
>>
so, /keyboard/ or /piano/ or maybe /keys/?
>>
>>65091891
Check craigslist and google the models you find

You can find used Privias on craigslist for 400 or under.

I just saw a 1600 dollar one for 150 dollars and it comes with a stand. lol.
>>
>>65093083
Which anime? Only piano anime I know is that "lie in april" or whatever. That was good.
>>
>>65094871
Seconding this. /PKG/

I'm pretty sure that's what the Pokemon General used to be called, sounds familiar. Best though.

or KPG, either or.
>>
>>65095299

Yeah I'm talking about that show. I hate how it makes playing piano seem like a competitive sport. Fuck it.
>>
>>65095493
It was awesome.

It also didn't have it as a competitive sport since no one won. It was about describing different playstyles and how emotion bled through their fingers into the music.
>>
>>65094258
>>65095269
Thanks
>>
>>65095807
Sure thing, bruv. All the poor college students are giving away mom's gift after music theory class without looking at how much it's worth.

Good luck beating the music shops to the punch though. Pretty sure they dedicate some dickhead to browse craigslist all day looking for the deals.
