Why is pic related the world's most popular and acclaimed prog album like it's the be all end all pinnacle of prog Rock? It's pretty shit compared to bands like Gentle Giant, Cardiacs, and Magma.

Because it's an album that almost everybody would like, which is saying quite alot for progressive rock. It might not be the biggest acomplishment in prog, but IT might be the One that Most people come Together arround

Because it was one of the most influential records of its time.

> (in late 1960s) The Nice, the Moody Blues, Procol Harum and Pink Floyd all contained elements of what is now called progressive rock, but none represented as complete an example of the genre as several bands that formed soon after. Almost all of the genre's major bands, including Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, ELP, Gentle Giant and Curved Air, released their debut albums during the years 1968–1970. Most of these were folk-rock albums that gave little indication of what the band's mature sound would become, but King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) was a fully formed example of the genre.

They put it all together: classical influences, experimentation, virtuosity, lyrical depth, wide array of styles/moods, atonality and so on. They set the blueprint for prog for years to come.

Very well put (and quoted)
They were 6 years ahead with court of the crimson king, and 15 years ahead with red. Other prog rock followed behind after they set the standard.
>>
Because it was so groundbreaking at the time. But even King Crimson themselves did much better albums. LTIA, Red, Discipline, Thrak, etc all far outclass this album.
