Help me appreciate metal.
The main genres I listen to are hip hop, reggae, and funk.
I also listen to a little bit of punk rock such as pennywise sometimes.
How come I have never heard a metal song I enjoy? It's all just annoying noises that literally give me headaches...
However I believe it's ignorant to say a whole genre is crap.
For example there is lots of really crap country music but there is Johnny Cash.
Show me some good metal that wont make me want to rip my ears off to avoid the pain of hearing it.

Metal generally isn't an intellectual genre. Just dynamic riffs and alot of forward momentum.
The bands that take time to appreciate aren't difficult because they're metal, it's because they're incorporating outside influences.

Real metal fans can tell you better but just like the Classical scene, Metal suffers from a huge number of casual players who are not very accomplished at their craft.
It ends up being a bunch of bang, clank, gong, wonk, etc.
In other words, it's a whole lot of work and it still said nothing.
Classical benefits from the extreme level of technique that is necessary to achieve master status. This gives connoisseurs a place to go once they are bored of the mainstream.
Metal needs to further develop it's own connoisseur level if it wants to stay relevant.
