artists you thought played a totally diferent genre than what they actually played before listening to them
>I thought sufi made blues/country
Well some of his stuff is folk so kind of close.
I generally look artists up on RYM or something before listening to them so usually the genres give a close hint. I guess Television maybe, since they're usually described as punk/post punk.
Vampire Weekend too. When I was just hearing about them I thought they were like a scene band or something like Asking Alexandria just from their name.

I thought he made sad banjo music and it turns out, he makes sad banjo music

Listen to Age of Adz friend

>tfw he ends Impossible Soul with sad banjo music.
For some reason I always thought built to spill was a post hardcore band before I listensd to them
>>65067134
that really does look like a post hardcore album cover though
>>65067134
same and I was pleasantly surprised
I still don't know what kind of music 21 Pilots make
I imagine it being some really bland radio indie rock but I've seen people saying it's edgy hip hop so I'm confused
Not curious enough to check out tho

It's radio indie rock mixed with radio hip-hop.
Like a more hip-hop "Radioactive".

I thought Emancipator made atmospheric black metal. Boy was I wrong.
>>65067134
Almost true actually. Doug's band before Built to Spill, Treepeople, was post-hardcore.
One time I saw a picture of Beck in a cowboy hat and thought he did country for a year or two before I heard one of his songs.
I thought Tribe was a quirky gothic rock band from the 90s based off this image.

>25 minute song
>last two minutes are sad banjo music
>soofy is literally a sad banjo
They actually make prog.
>>65066993
Not exactly genre-related, but I mixed up Kanye and Eminem as a kid. I unironically thought and appreciated that Kanye West was a white artist in a black-dominated genre like hip hop.

what, really? I always assumed it was some alt country oldie shit. I came into this thread wondering how people ever were wrong about this sort of stuff and kept that impression until this post
Based on the name I thought he made parody joke-rap like the Teriyaki Boys
>>65071186
You're cute.
>>65071278
They're a mix of boogie rock/prog rock/AOR
Underrated band to be honest
