If you read the contemporary reviews for Shout At The Devil from 83-84, most of them said it was a surprisingly limp album and felt like an almost laboratory-distilled blend of every major rock act of the past decade from Aerosmith to Van Halen.

I don't see what's contradictory about that. He gives a seemingly fair review of the book, acknowledges several interesting points the author makes, but concludes by saying he remains unconvinced. When he talks about metal's classical strains, he's refuting the author's argument. The sentence prior is a more fundamental refutation, arguing that the author was approaching the topic with the wrong idea--if he's going to convince anyone it won't be that way. Christgau spends the following sentence outlining why he still generally dislikes metal, but by sticking that bigot line in at the end, shows that he's self-aware enough to (hopefully) not make the mistake of blanket-dismissing metal.
It is pretty poorly organized writing though.

I don't think those should be taken as fighting words. Christgau has been writing for a long time, so sometimes he can delivery extremely sardonic comments like that quite subtley. I'm no fan of his so I'm not that knowledgable on his style, but I think that sentence is poking fun at those "rock 'intellectuals'" as much as it is "the metal faithful." His seemingly unironic (or at least not as ironic) use of 'rock intellectuals' in the last paragraph makes me doubt myself somewhat though. It could just be a lazy extension of his previous joke that he forgot to make more clear.
