pic related: my entire last week's listening
Posing a hypothetical, then I'm going to bed:
Lets say you REALLY loved an artist even though they have made a lot of terrible albums. They'd made music for a very long time (say since the 60s) but then say 20 years ago passed away. They have thousands of hours of archival footage and recordings, that could potentially be made into albums. HOWEVER, a lot of their older albums, which are their most loved, are hard to find physically and have many terrible/neglected pressings that aren't worth seeking out.
Would you rather the family trust that is in charge of that artists' discography focus on reissuing those neglected albums, OR put out the unheard recordings and make them into albums. However, the relatives are also greedy/lazy and will often put out cash grabs and things unrelated to the artist/things they never even recorded, like tribute albums or shitty live concerts. However, these albums are occasionally amazing (seemingly by accident).
Vote now on my definitely-not-specific-and-totally-hypothetical strawpoll:

>>65046470
I MEAN GEE, I'd love another fucking unimportant live album recorded on a tape from a porta-john outside the venue, but maybe I'd like to be able to have a vinyl copy of one of We're Only in it For the Money (ironic, considering current state of Zappa trust) in better than G+ condition for less than $90, ya know? Jesus. Like I get the copyright shit (hence why they actually flipped the album inside out on the initial releade) but what about an album like Absolutely Free with none of that shit tied to it? You'd think one person would give a shit about arguably one of the first prog albums ever other than "we'll release it on CD with two shitty songs in the middle that totally inturrupt the flow/point of the albums herp herp xP" shit damn
>>65047000

>Radiohead - Pablo Honey
A mixed bag: the first two tracks are really good alt rock songs with nice chord progressions, melodies and arrangements, but unfortunately not everything else is as great.
The second half is really boring, derivative and generic, except for a couple of moments that are actually a little interesting, like the shoegazy end of "Blow Out".
The first 6 songs are still pretty nice and have some interesting bits, for example the climax of "Stop Whispering", that makes me almost forgive it for being Radiohead doing U2. Almost.
The drum parts are really well written and executed in almost all the tracks, so that's also a plus.
Don't really recommend it: it's nice and all, but, except for a few good moments and even a couple of gems, it's nothing special. But it wish it was special. So fucking special.
6/10
>Battles - B EP
God this is so much fun: DANCE and IPT 2 are some of the most danceable songs i've heard in the whole math rock genre, with the first being basically a group jam with fantastic layer of melodies and noisy guitars and the second a little blast of a simple but effective guitar riff and a simple but effective quirky synth riff.
BTTLS is a big EAI group improvisation: the sounds present are really interesting and it uses its dynamics really well, especially near the end; if you have listened to it you will know what I am talking about.
But main protagonist here is SZ2, a huge, multifaced and multisectioned jam. Driving riffs, catchy grooves and a general danceability make this track very playful, funny and replayable, despite its long running time.
7.5/10
>Battles - EP C
The tracks here are constructed with little variations and changes over a theme that is repeated over and over, with very few different sections. Still, the riffs displayed and their delivery are fantastic: the band is incredibly technical and, even if this sometimes may feel like riffs and improvisation for the sake of riffs and improvisation, they are always really enjoyable.
Also Hi/Lo is the most banger track in the entire math rock scene.
7/10
>Battles - Tras
Tras is a funny track, with funny synths delivering funny melodies above guitar riffs and groovy drumming. Yes, it's very funny.
Fantasy also has some pretty nice grooves, and I really like how it slowly changes from one section to another, but is really too minimal for its own good, even thought I like hearing Battles producing an electronic song.
6.5/10
>Battles - B EP / EP C
On this compilation, that brings together EP C, B EP and Tras, the negative aspects are really evident: these songs feel like experiments, and who knows, maybe they really are, because they don't seem to focus that much on creating a coherent composition, or aesthetic, but they prefer to explore what the band can do. For this reason a lot of tracks here really just seem like fillers, like Tras 3, UW and IPT-2, for example.
But still, these experiments are full of interesting moments and ideas, and, also, are really enjoyable and funny.
B EP is slightly better than EP C only because it has SZ2 on it.
7/10

A very chilled emo experience but with still plenty of heart break with a touch of post-rock here and there. The songs layout are pretty good that set up this tone to some serious and emotionally driven stories. Though I prefer more high energy to my emo, the pacing is often to slow for me to really get into. It leave me wanting more burst of youthful energy to drive this home for me.

>Serious Thugs - Ur Not a Baller
Bubblegum bass usually rides the perfect line between progressive conceptual pop and trashy production. This rides the perfect line between trashy production and radio disney. Still fun, but not holding any real value.
4
>Earth - Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword
I get that it's drone metal, but this really starts to drone on during track two. If that track were cut in half i swear this would be great, what is actually being played is engaging on its own, but it's more or less the same chords played on loop for 50 minutes with little variation. And this is coming from /daily/'s resident ambient fuckboy.
5
>Illusion of Safety - The False Mirror
Dark ambient concept EP about a man in a wheelchair.
They both barely go anywhere.
5
>Illusion of Safety - Cancer
It seems these guys are best when they blend plunderphonics with surreal drone. >The way this album can just flash between a harsh noise drone track and a beautiful piano solo in the span of seconds while still feeling fluid is outstanding.
7
>Keith Rowe, Oren Ambarchi, Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide & Robbie Avenaim - Thumb
Never have I heard EAI that so perfectly captures the feeling of anxiety. This single 30 minute track feels like the ceiling is slowly lowering, getting ready to crush you. I guess EAI's kind of a thing I should look more into.
8
>>65052600
never fully got into those guys. i should give them a look in a while.
>>65052679
>Alan Lamb - Original Masters - Night Passage
This probably isn't the album's fault as I'm 99% sure the artist didn't do this, but this really just sounds like Paulstreched recordings of radio wires. It's nothing too awful, fairly standard DA, but I just can't get that image out of my head. Giving it a 5 for now. Ignore what the chart says.
5
>Earth - Hex; or Printing in the Infernal Method
I like the americana twist this record took, but it holds the same "every song sounds the same" issue after a while. This band probably isn't for me honestly.
6
>Jim O'Rourke - Disengage
Jim's most straight ambient release yet. Both sides did a good job at keeping interesting throughout their runtime. I like how it often gets you so invested that you don't realize how much the track has changed until you directly compared the two sections.
Of the two sections, I enjoyed disc 2 more, but that's just how the album's structured. The Mere tracks act as the quieter, more restrained buildup to the Young Person's Guide to Drowning tracks.

>Iron + Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
I was a big fan of The Shepard's Dog when I heard it a while back, and this is more or less that but better. Simple yet engaging melodies and wonderfully personal lyrics. Hits all my contemporary folk pressure points. Mmmm.

>Earth - Hibernaculum
I like the americana twist this record took, but it holds the same "every song sounds the same" issue after a while. This band probably isn't for me honestly.
This band's so interesting you didn't notice I copied this review from earlier.

Personally Earth is one of my favorite bands. I love drone and repetitiveness after all (Fucking love Eleh). But that may be just me

lol wtf is up with that pic
>>65052845
>I love drone and repetitiveness after all (Fucking love Eleh). But that may be just me
yeah me too, but i just don't like the metal aspect as much. it feels like they could be an amazing avant-country band though.

>Also did you check how autistic that last.fm thread got?
could you explain
I'm syncing with friends and don't really think I can read through the thread
>>65053851
>I think Bees Made Honey is a great album
Yeah man it's Really good. One thing, if you were digging the Americana twist in Hex, check out Mohammad - Som Sakrifis.
Truly amazing, shorter and less metal. But still droney. There's a link in the archives btw, from a recent Sharethread
>>65053943
>Mohammad - Som Sakrifis
thnx. <3
this is great
>>65053868
You know that guy who always posts my profile and some others? He is having an autistic fit, and revealed who he was. Also i haven't listened to V 1.28 it was a joke
>>65053963
Are you sure?
I need you to be sure before I listen and find out it's a pile of shit.
How do you rate an album if you dislike the point of it /daily/?
Examples: Heavy repetition, sparsity, gritting textures, etc
>>65054001
it's not the kind of thing you like :s
if you like the human voice and want to feel what hell is like listen to it though, it's short
>>65054018
It all depends on whether the final result is something you like. It seems a bit weird to dislike the point of heavy repetition if you enjoy the record right
>>65053997
>You know that guy who always posts my profile and some others?
yeah
>He is having an autistic fit, and revealed who he was.
oh shit
will check thread out later
>Also i haven't listened to V 1.28 it was a joke
phew I got scared
get in the sync we're listening to sculpture music
:O
Does /daily/ listen to any radio stations?
>>65052832
I think not, trianglecubed edited just that part to make it like that.
>>65054018
>>65054030
This is the album that had me pondering this question.
I guess I enjoyed it, and I'd listen to it again, but it's literally one unchanging song for almost a full hour.
I wish there was more variation and freedom within the piece, but I also recognize that that would defeat the point of the album.
Gah.
COME SYNC OR DIE
>>65046469
this isn't that accurate because most of my listens this week were on my phone
>>65054129
>not liking the "point" of The Necks
That's a first. Anyway, rate it based on what it is, not on what it could have been. Also, listen to Hanging Gardens, Silverwater, Mindset, and Chemist. And Piano Bass Drums. And, if you're cool, Athenaeum, Homebush, Quay & Raab. Oh, and listen to Aquatic and Drive By. And maybe Aether. Townsville, too!
>>65046469
lmao
>>65054759
I always saw it as
>The point of The Necks is to be boring.
Yeah so yeah nope.

Chris Connor - Chris Connor
[1956]
>vocal jazz
An almost completely weightless listen, it goes so easy on the ears you can't help but love it. Fun, yes, but also stimulating; Chris has a very nice voice and the playing goes behind it without ever getting overshadowed. Does a lot of things that instrumental jazz can't, without losing the atmosphere.

>>65054936
Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show - Revenge: The Bigger The Love The Greater The Hate
>>65054759
That's the thing; I liked the album, I understand "the point" and I might even recommend it to others. However, I think the constraints placed on the piece by the artist, though intentional, prevent it from reaching greatness.
This style of album will never reach the musical competency and exploratory nature of Dophy's Out To Lunch.
This will never evoke the emotion of Pink Moon.
This will never pump you up like White Light/White Heat, never break you down like Spiderland or bring you up like Astral Weeks.
And yet, that's part of the point.
>>65054915
foetus is shit
delete
add jazz
>>65054915
>>65055331
foetus is good only the first three though delete all the rest except reich and add jazz

I'd like to recommend Parker/Edwards/Prevost - 3 Nights at Cafe Oto. Problem is it's 3 discs, so maybe just disc 1? there's also a DVD with selections from all 3 nights that is also good. I can up it if you can't find a copy
>>65055380
>>65055331
mmmnah
i will take jazz recs in general tho
>>65055463

I'll look for it on soulseek and all the other sites where I look later. I will ask for a link if I can't find it I guess.

mostly avant shit and dark jazz. enjoyed most of what i've heard from Brötzmann, Hubbard, and Roberts. i also like Undercurrent.
Naked City's cool if that counts.
>>65055613

>>65055644

Andrew Hill - Compulsion!!!!! (My fav, very dark and spoopy)
The Lounge Lizards - s/t
Cecil Taylor - 3 Phasis
Joe Harriott - Hum Dono
>>65054789
I don't see how this is remotely true, their repetitive approach to music is not fundamentally different from drone or minimalism, they just use more "jazzy" instrumentation to achieve it. Unless you want to tell me that drone and minimalism are fundamentally boring, I don't really get what you're getting at.
>>65054936
fuck u
>>65055297
I find their stronger output to be rather hypnotizing. It has its own unique effect on the listener.
>>65055644

The Jazz Composer's Orchestra - s/t
Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity
The Pyramids - King of Kings

note:
my chart looks so bad for several reasons:
-i want to get on weird netlabels and need to find more to shill my music to
-i want to fill the need for a expert on ambient and plunderphonics in these threads
-i like that style of music so fuck you
>>65055644

eh, I wish it were less top heavy, but I think it's alright.
