I actually thought the vocal mix was good but I've always thought that late night TV doesn't treat their instrumental mix right. It's so small and doesn't envelope you like at the show. They actually performed well here. Avey's too wacky and Panda is too clenched in some spots and too loose in others. I bet he has some weird technique. Both of them ended up sounding like parodies of themselves. The synth stuff was waaaay too quiet. Low on psych quotient.

There are really fun songs on Painting With. They're nowhere near as interesting as previous releases, or as fucking pristine as MPP but songs like The Burglars, Golden Gal and Floridada are great AnCo songs -- Recycling is also a classic AnCo ending.
Not their best album, or their best era but they are still great. I don't think you'll ever go back to anything as interesting as Feels tho.
They seriously need to pick up some guitars and let Panda play drums again.
