it's almost 2am here, meaning everything i produce now sounds weird as fuck since i am just throwing a bunch of random fucking noises into a track, hoping it sounds good.

In my honest opinion this sounds like a very fun freestyle rap battle beat, the idea is nice.
I don't know much about recording though, but I'd say you should record the beats and samples in seperate tracks so you can balance out the mix.

>>65038082
Sounds a bit dull in my opinion, maybe work a bit on the stereo field? The song itself sounds good.

Here's some Dubstep stuff I made for my upcoming youtube channel, any ideas for the composition or anything? I tried to make it more ''commercial/generic'' sounding.
Also if anyone of you know something about saturation, how should I apply it?

Scarlet 2i2 is a really priceworthy interface. Is does what its supposed to and never fucks around. I did some tests recording the same re-amped guitar through the same speaker with a sm57 but with different interfaces. 2i2 was good but i prefered my steinberg ur22mk2. Its a LITTLE bit cheaper but does the same job as the 2i2 and has better sounding pre-amps.

you just created the theme song for a kid's show congrats
for real though, add some low frequency sounds e.g. a bassline, change the synths (pretty sure you only used square wave synths that generally sound very game-y on their own)
the drums don't help either so see that you can get better samples

It's the weekend /prod/ what are you all working on?
>>
https://clyp.it/dejrrm1v

Been sitting on the production on this one for ages, to the point of listening to it so much that I can't really perceive anything of it anymore.
Can't find any motivation to continue, so any feedback is appreciated.

I have another similiar song but I have uploaded the shorter one.

Too much bass? Very unsure on the snare, too much reverb perhaps? Or maybe the track itself is boring.

for what reason would you use a compressor
and how?
>>
>>65039971

I use it on drums and bass mainly

Detailed reasons for why and how here:

https://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep09/articles/compressionmadeeasy.htm
>>
>>65048925
there are lots of yt tutorials out there. basic explanation is:
your song got loud parts and not so loud parts. compressor takes loud parts and makes them less loud so that the volume level of the track is evened out

pro tip: don't overdo it

Anyone working with logic:
Do you have a nice "mastering" preset (for the Main Output Track) for Electronic Music? I use the presets "Basic" or "Hyped Mix" slightly adjusted because I am too stupid to make my own setup.
Any advices?
>>
>>65049152
>>65049152
I think mastering will totally depend on how your track sounds to begin with. If you don't understand what each of those mastering plugins do enough to make your own mastering chammel then just slapping a mastering preset chammel on your mastering chammel isn't going to help you much.
I'd remove that mastering chammel and start learning how each individual plugin works. Start by eqing each individual chammel, compress (if needed) and setting levels on your mixer to get a nice sounding mix, then maybe add a master buss compressor to your master chammel, learn what it's doing and how it works best on your track. Once you've done that do the same for each of the other mastering plugins you want to use.
Each new track you write will probably be different so will require different settings on those master buss plugins.
I tend to try and get my tracks to sound right first before adding minimal mastering, but some people like to set up the mastering then mix into that while building the track. Most modern computers you can get away with running compressors etc on each chammel so I prefer that approach as it gives me much more detail.

So I was trying to mess with some voice samples to get a result similar to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUhr77e8Eho

The guy's "normal" voice is much closer to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFs4_8sJTT0

So the clip is pitched down, even with him talking lower, and the lower part of the EQ is turned up to make him rumble a little bit.

Thing I am most interested in though is how they are getting the effect leading into each line. It is obviously some kind of re-sample of the original clip, but without doing a ton of manual work in taking the original clip and cutting many times to match some of the emphasized syllables and dragging their length out (and adding some reverb / echo / pitch shift further down / level blend), is there any remotely "automatic" way I can replicate this effect in FL Studio?

Any advice appreciated on how to replicate this effect or even just get something that sounds cool.
>>
>>65050906

It's reversed reverb - and the single most asked about vocal effect probably.

Take your vocal track, reverse it and add reverb (with a little slap-back delay if you want a more pronounced effect) - record the reverb to a separate track and then reverse it and line it up with your original non-reversed vocal so that the reversed reverb tails precede the vocal - you can delete the reversed vocal as you only needed it to generate the reverb track.
>>
>>65051016
>Take your vocal track, reverse it

Meant to add that it's best to make a copy of the vocal track to reverse.

>>
>>65051042

I'll also add (as I usually do) that this effect was originally done on multitrack tape by flipping the tape spool over, which also reverses the track order - with tape the vocal and the reversed reverb would line up perfectly when the tape spool was back in its original orientation.

what does muddy sound have to do with the guy being on beat?
>>
>>65052039
stretching / warping the wav and getting distortion. maybe muddy wasnt the right term

muddy usually refers to something having too much low end and not being very defined in the highs

anybody use a kaoss pad with their daw?

i'm trying to get mine set up on the midi in/out of my interface so i can record midi clips of the touchpad activity and play it back but there's some weird shit going on

instead of just making the touchpad send an x and a y signal as cc's it also sends another one called touchpad on/off that just goes between 0 and 127 only depending on if you're touching the pad at all or not.

it records the touchpad x and y as cc's just fine but the touchpad on/off seems to be cuasing some kind of issue. it didnt play back the motion at first so i deleted the automation curve in the clip that the touchpad on/off made, which then made it start working, but then i was messing around with some of the other controls while the clip was playing and it started not playing the touchpad automations again, even though i hadnt made a new automation for the touchpad on/off

this shit is so close to being within my grasp, i just wanna figure it out already
>>
>>65053713
okay so after a little more fucking around it seems like having the touchpad held down when the clip starts recording is what is fucking it up

when the touchpad on/off clip starts at 127 (touchpad on), then the pad motions won't play unless at some point in the touchpad on/off clip the value goes to 0 (touchpad off) and then back to 127 without the clip restarting

drawing in a 0 breakpoint at the start of every clip seems like the obvious short term workaround but i'd really like to not have to do it every time and just figure out what's fucking me up here

any help is appreciated although i dont think there are a lot of kaoss pad users here
>>
>>65053843
>>65053713
even weirder still, if you stop the clip in a place where the touchpad is activated, you can press play and it will restart the clip with the pad motions going even if the touchpad on/off curve in the clip starts at 127. if you touch the touchpad while it's stopped though, the touchpad won't be activated anymore and the same thing i described above will happen when restarting the clip that starts at 127

starting to suspect i may be on my own for this, but another update:

going into the kaoss pad editor and disabling pad touch from sending any cc data is also not working, the automations won't play unless you're actually physically touching the pad (or if you engage the hold button for the touch pad)

>>
hey everyone, it's me >>65055390 again.

doesnt look like im gonna have much luck with this, but i'd like to at least settle for using the kaoss pad as an external effect instead of as an external instrument that i have to route other tracks into.

the x and y and pad touch all get recorded into automation curves in the clip when i put it on a midi track and record a clip, but it doesnt seem to be sending it back out when the clip plays. do i need the external instrument's "send midi to" option or is there a way i can just get it to send the automation curves back out to the kaoss pad?
>>
>>65055488
Thanks, that does help.
>>
>>65056537
looks like i cant do this for audio clips even if i do get it working since they dont record any cc data in the envelope section like midi clips do

this fuckin sucks, all the pieces are there and they just dont fit together at all seemngly
>>
>>65056667

You'll need a separate MIDI clip to hold the kaoss pad controller data, and (if you're using Ableton) you'll need to disable "Arm Exclusive" by right-clicking a record arm button and unticking "Arm Exclusive".

This will allow you to arm (and record to) multiple tracks at once, so you can record your MIDI data and your audio data in a single pass, if that's what you need.
>>
>>65057170
yeah, that's what i was doing before... was just trying to figure out if there was a way to do it without making the kaoss pad it's own track.

i'm still pissed about this stupid touchpad on/off thing though... could they really not have made it so that a 0 value for x or y signified the pad not being pressed and the controllable range with the pad was from 1-127 thus eliminating the need for the pad touch parameter? or just programmed it so that a clip starting with the pad touch engaged would actually start with the pad touch engaged instead of having to engage it after the clip starts?
>>
https://clyp.it/rn0kbzbx
am i dj premier yet?
>>
>>65057250

I can see from your previous posts that the touchpad does send an on/off control (touched/not touched) as well as the x-y data - I guess also that the device itself connects to the computer as a MIDI device through USB?

Usually for these things you'd need to select "Remote" to "On" for the MIDI in and out ports for the device in Ableton preferences - that allows changes in the automation lanes to reflect in the device - have you tried that, or are you just using "Track" in the preferences? That doesn't always work.

>I guess also that the device itself connects to the computer as a MIDI device through USB?
no, usb is only for the editor, it works through midi in/out.

now it seems to also be fucking up when the 0 and 127 breakpoints are vertically lined up so i have to offset the 0

korg really dropped the ball here, it's so fucking sporadic about when the automations will and wont activate.

this is a really huge disappointment, i tried to do my homework before i grabbed the audio interface with all the ins/outs i needed to do this but i couldnt find anyone trying to do what i'm doing and i couldn't think of any reason why recording 3 cc clips and then playing them back would cause so many problems

this is bullshit
>>
>>65058391

There are a shitloads of packs for all sorts of percussions and drums out there but I can never find good drumsticks hits, for some reason.

I just checked the manual - you can transmit MIDI over the USB connection with that model.

From the manual:
>NOTE
If you connect the USB connector to your
computer and install the USB MIDI driver, the USB connection will transmit and receive the same MIDI messages as the MIDI connectors.

Install the USB MIDI driver and enable the kaoss pad as a MIDI device in Ableton MIDI preferences, choosing both "Track" and Remote" on both input and output ports - let us know what (if anything) changes.

I don't blame you. I never use any of the preset devices or samples in any DAW.

A few of Ableton's default mixing devices are pretty good (EQ, compressor, multiband compressor), but beyond that you should just use 3rd party VSTs (plugins).

Look into synths like Serum, Massive, and Synplant. There are way more good ones out there, but those are all good for beginners.

For effects, there are hundreds of companies out there that make plugins, so you'll just have to do your own research and experiment with lots of things.

Don't rely on Internet forums for basic questions like this, though. You'll need to learn to be self-sufficient and autodidactic, otherwise you'll make no progress.

>>
>>65067963
You might be confusing some terminology. A synth is an instrument. You can't create an instrument out of samples.

Generally, samples and synths are completely unrelated. Some synths do allow you to import samples, which it uses as a source for generating sound; it usually changes the sample quite a bit. What you're referring to (tiny samples, or tiny pieces of samples, repeated) is called granular synthesis; re-sampling is also an option. But the most common form you'll use is subtractive synthesis.
>>
>>65068352
>You can't create an instrument out of samples.
... yes you can
>>
>>65068778
You can create a synth SOUND out of samples. You can't create a synth itself out of samples.

People often mix up "synth" with "synth patch" or "synth output".

I guess you could argue a wavetable synth is made out of wave cycle samples, maybe.

What are some production and composition techniques that Oneohtrix Point Never uses?

I'm brand new to this stuff so this is mostly just a guess, but here's what I think I've heard:

-Background noise and pads with subtle, quiet melodies and volume patterns
-Varying use of timing and syncopation
-Some loops are 1-2 beats shorter or longer than you'd expect given the time signature (like a 4 bar loop followed by a 5 bar loop followed by two 4 bar loops; or maybe I'm just incorrectly identifying the actual time signature)
-Sudden volume shifts
-Hypnotic loops that are very long, but somehow manage to not be long enough to bore the listener
-Almost no percussion, and very light in the low end
-Samples that usually aren't tuned or pitch shifted, or are only pitch shifted subtly
-Clever use of stereo imaging, with sounds moving around different parts of the head space regularly
-Loop layers that change out sync with one another other (maybe polyrhythmic?)

Anyone experienced able to confirm or deny some of this, or offer other info about his production? I find a lot of his tracks to be pretty unique, so I'm interested in his style.

Reverb is a bit too loud and muddying the mix somewhat. Cut the tail or reduce the wet %.

There are some other mix issues as well.

Definitely not a fan of the horns. They feel kitschy and vaguely dissonant. Are they tuned and in-key? Even if they are, I don't think they fit very well.

It also feels like it needs a top line melody, but otherwise, it sounds like it'd be a good backing track with mix improvements and the horns replaced in some way, IMO.
>>
I'm not a musician but synthesizers are really interesting me and I want to get one to have fun with. I found the Volca beats, bass, and keys for $300 altogether, which seems like a pretty sweet deal, but I want the volca sample. So should I get the bundle or the sample plus keys/bass? or should I just get a microbrute or something? Thanks
>>
>>65069632
No one can really answer that for you. Just watch videos of people playing all of those, and decide which you like best.

Generally speaking, it's good to have at least one "regular" keyboard synth. Keyboard playing is fundamental to most kinds of music. Volcas aren't really keyboards, even though some have chromatic keys.

So, you should probably get a Microbrute or another cheap-ish keyboard synth as your first or second synth. Then you can choose one or more Volcas, or some other sequencer synth.

Anyone here own volcas? What do you think about them?
>>65069679
Yeah, the volcas definitely don't seem good for practicing keyboard. I know the notes but that's pretty much it so it would be good if I could practice that. Maybe I'll get the brute and the volca sample together, seems like a good compromise. Or I could get the volcas and a cheap midi keyboard.
>>
>>65069871
Yes, 1-2 volcas and a MIDI keyboard would probably be ideal. At the moment the only gear I own is a Microbrute, Volca FM, and MIDI keyboard. And a cheap MIDI controller with knobs, for playing with VSTs.

I love my Microbrute, but it's overkill if you just want to learn to play keyboard. Plus, soft synths are arguably better and more versatile than the Microbrute, unless you're really looking for that specific warm analog sound (which no soft synth has ever been able to quite replicate perfectly, yet) or really like the interface.

Not him, but I wonder if anyone uses any particular mixing tips and tricks here. I'm not too experienced, so I just slap an equalizer on everything and cut the freqs on some instruments and boost them on others.

'Cause I'm a jackass like that.

You should consider trying to get into him a bit more. He's stated that while Replica was basically random experimenting, R+7 and GoD were meticulously planned beforehand. R+7 had some random MIDI triggering, so some parts are accidental, but GoD didn't.

I have the Volca bass and sample. I really like both. My advice would be to get the sample over the beats, I have my sample loaded up with 4 classic drum machines (you could load yours up with all the Volca beats samples if you wanted) which makes it pretty flexible as a drum machine and also good for other stuff too. I'm actually thinking of getting a second one as I like them so much.

>a sampler that doesn't actually sample
The sample doesn't have any physical inputs so you can't plug a microphone or any other sound source into it to sample from. All the samples need to be loads onto it from either your phone, tablet or computer. This seems to get a lot of people red with rage but it's actually no problem at all. Editing samples inside the actual Volca would be a real cunt anyway so sampling on your computer, editing and transferring them to the Volca works well for me, besides its a £100 sampler so what do people expect!

If you actually want to play the synths then get some kind of controller I use a pad based one but a control keyboard would be better, or even a old synth should work as a controller.
Also Absolute music is my local music shop!

I've been on a couple of compilations and played a live show in London about 10 years ago...been producing for nearly 20 years now!

I rarely post my music here or online, but I come here often to help out the impatient morons with their silly questions. I like it here.
>>
>>65071429
>I never did install the Logic factory content. After you have kontakt there just isn't any point.
No same here. My sample library is getting quite big now but my actual source sounds for making that library are pretty small. I can never understand all these huge library's. I've sat and gone through pretty much every sample and synth preset in ultimate now and at most I'd use a couple of drum kits, a couple of bass sounds and a couple of keyboard and pad sounds. The rest can go in the bin.
Last year I decided to cut my own personal sample library rhat I've been building up over the last 10 years plus right down to the best samples I have and decided no more than 16 samples in each category 16 kicks, 16 snares, 16 hats, 16 basses etc might do that again next time I have a week or 2 spare.

And this is what I have on the 2nd channal - you don't need to mess around with the in/outs of the channel strip in ableton, that's probably whats confusing the path

i suppose it is, how can i unfuck it though? the reason why it sounds so dissonant is probably because i aranged the piano parts in triads to make them sound beefier, but it didn't work out so well.
