Favourite black metal albums ever
Liturgy? I thought you said black metal?
Great GOAT
Shit Boring
classic
Is it wrong to like both black metal and blackgaze or w/e "hipster" black metal?
>>65035303 It's not original but these and Bathory's Blood Fire Death are genre defyining
>>65035332
Why do you care?
>>65035095
I like the bottom row way better than the top. Meloblack is shit
>>65035452
Excellent taste senpai
>>65035332
I really like blackgaze too. I guess I'm not hipster enough to hate a particular genre.
>>65035478
False hipster please leave
I'm a huge fan of the 1994-1996 Norwegian period in which bm started branching out. Ulver's Bergtatt, In The Woods.....'s HEart Of The Ages, Borknagar's s/t, Sort Vokter's Folkloric Necro Metal, Ved Buens Ende...'s Written In Waters, Enslaved's Vikingligr Veldi, Fleurety's Min Tid Skal Komme, Arcturus' Aspera Hiems Symfonia, Burzum's Filosofem and Mysticum's In The Streams Of Inferno are probably the ones that resonate emotionally the most with me.
Honorary mention to 1997 for Gorgoroth's Under The Sign Of Hell and Ulver's Nattens Madrigal. Not to mention the 1993-1994 classics.
>>65035452
name of the album? is it SDBM?
>>65035522
great taste !
>>65035433
Is this one better than blaze? I didn't really enjoyed blaze, so I never listened more from this band.
>>65035095
My fav
>>65035501
>I guess I'm not hipster enough to hate a particular genre.
Funny.
>>65035522
my kind of nigger
patrician taste
>>65035511
I like trve BM too but dissection and emperor are overrated trash
Deafheaven is more trve than dissection which is basically melodeath with muh screamed vocals.
Dissection is proto-behemoth/mgla/etc which pretends to be kvlt but isn't, which is way worse than blackgaze which at least is open about being influenced by screamo, post rock, and the like.
more like pic related? this is like the best thing i've ever heard
>>65035862
Nice taste.
>>65035095
10/10 taste
Best norwegian and swedish black metal albums.
Best post black and atmospheric albums as well
Prefer Agalloch's ashes against the grain but this is top tier as well
Got some 2nd tier favourites as well
>>65035095
great list but liturgy isn't black
φαλιδα θέλω τη ζαkέτα μου
Who here /greekblackmetal/ ?
>>65035095
What is top right? Have been meaning to check it out
>>65035095
Storm of the Lights Bane
>>65035678
Blaze[...] still has lots of death metal elements in it, while Transilvanian[...] is pretty much the archetype for second-wave (best wave lol) black metal, so yea, they're very much different.
Now, word of advise: If you thought Blaze[...] was too raw and underproduced, um, steer clear.
>>65036096
just read it
>>65035855
Please listen to pic related (Ildjarn was a member and it's better than anything he ever did under his own name)
Drudkh - Blood in our wells
Burzum - Hvist Lyset Tar Oss
Urfaust - Geist is teufel
Inquistion - Obscure verses for the multiverse
In no particular order, just some favorites I can recall
>>65035982
The greek scene is like my second or third favourite scene of the 90s.
>>65035678
>>65036127
Either way you should try Under A Funeral Moon first
A gem!
>>65036215
a dead poem from rotting christ is the best greek black metal album

>>65036490

>>65036969
Alas! I am undone!
>>65037005
afterwalker
bandcamp artist I can't remember how I found that is pretty obscure but put out three fucking great albums
>>65035982
>>65036215
yes give me all the greek recs, besides the obvious
>>65036969
Liturgy isn't even black metal, go back to bed HHH
>>65037080
I'm not sure what the obvious are, but here are my favs:
Rotting Christ (ok perhaps this one's the obvious one)
Varathron
Necromantia
Naer Mataron
Thou Art Lord
>>65037195
yea these were the obvious ones I was referring to (besides naer mataron, still haven't checked them out)
>>65035862

>>65037283
Ah, feck.
>>65037080

Been really digging the space-core black metal as of recently.
Americans should be banned from making black metal t b h
>>65038977
Leviathan has a couple of good records
>>65038942
This came out a few days ago, pretty good spacey ambient bm.
>>65038977
Why
>>65038977
yeah, nah
>>65035095
what's on the bottom right? i've heard the other three but i have no clue which one is bottom right
Literally is only one answer.
Filosofem.
>>65039091
literally "rate your music - the answer"
>>65035862
I like the record but I cannot get over what these guys look like...
>>65039045
I actually just listened to this.
Honestly I was a little underwhelmed, maybe because it is less experimental than other space BM albums like Isolate and U.M.A.
>>65039111
like two sad french dudes?
>>65039068
It's pretty good on wax.
>>65039105
Just happens RYM was right about this one.
Been revisiting this lately.
>>65035855
Bone Awl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH0rr_B8IrA
Vordr
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2wdRg-r_-M
Odelegger is the most blatant Ildjarn-worship project, and is fantastic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zuZ5AUvCZY
Veering further into noisy hardcore there are many bands like Sexdrome, Sump, Horrid Cross, Grinning Death's Head... Ildjarn/Bone Awl-derived punk was a thriving subgenre a few years back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9TlUjGBamU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N19QqbszkhY
the Sort Vokter album anon posted is good, of course. I do prefer Ildjarn solo though.
I swear Quebec has the best black metal.
>>65039159
Good pick.
>>65039168
>Québécois
probably this one
filosofem and krallice's diotima are contenders though
Black Metal albums I have given 5 stars on RYM:
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Agalloch - The Mantle
Blut aus Nord - MVII
Deafheaven - New Bermuda
Drudkh - Microcosmis
Drudkh - Handful of Stars
Drudkh - Eternal Turn of the Wheel
Drudkh - A Furrow Cut Short
Hate Forest - Purity
Krallice - Diotima
Sigh - Infidel Art
Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars
>>65039209
>>65039168
>>65039290
Years Past Matter is better than Diotima by a mile if only for the third track
>>65039290
I'll never understand how some people prefer New Bermuda over RtJ or Sunbather
>>65039296
>Csejthe
I absolutely loved Réminiscence but could not get into that first record.
:)
>>65039342
RtJ is gay crescendo core. Sunbather is basically screamo
>>65039290
>all those Drudkh albums
>no Autumn Aurora
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l9Rb1_7Vzo
This is just too good.
>>65039367
Oh it's an anit-meme thing then
>>65037080
Sacriphyx - The Western Front
recent album from Australia (and honestly more in the death metal camp all things told)... but you'll know that sound when you hear it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWviWkXQNaY
does anyone have an essentials black metal chart or a "how to get into?" I've heard some stuff and liked it but don't really know where to start exploring
Are there any other regional black metal charts like the Quebec one?
>>65039558
Ignore the "essentials", just find a record you like and go from there
Try any of these records
>>65039432
>>65039102
>>65039068
>>65036274
>>65035697
>>65035501
>>65035452
>>65035433
>>65035303
>>65036490
a full list of names would probably be helpful for us plebs, but in particular what's the blackened punk one?
>>65039620
thanks! I'll check them all out
>>65039634
clockwise from top left unless name legible
>Afterwalker - S/T (III)
previously mentioned, but it's a double album in four tracks that goes from sort of pretty to crushing, throbbing, "epic" sounding black metal. for real though, one of the tracks is forty minutes. highly recommend this artist. it reminds me of the pitchfork review for Street Horrrsing:
>They're not afraid to let a beat pound forever, or let a drone wash slowly, or let a pedal loop endlessly. Where more traditional groups might worry that a part goes on too long, Fuck Buttons seem fascinated by what will happen if it does, riding it just past the point of expectation before hitting you with the next big switch-up.
their first album is also quite good in a shorter format
>Storm of the Light's Bane
needs no explanation from me
>Quincunx - S/T
the blackened punk one - raw stuff off of Colloquial Sound Recordings, dropped two tapes and broke up. Pretty hard-hitting stuff, but some tracks are better than others
>Wounder - Deepest Wounds
angry stuff from the man behind goreshit of all things, but very good. iirc, he says he performed this one in a mental hospital around the same time he did a few ambient albums under a different name. he has the scars to corroborate the story.
>Egaheer - Demo '93 & Demo '94
old polish stuff I was liking at the time. I thought it has a sort of Peste Noire vibe. Still good, but I'm not as enamored.
>Roman Cross - Make Graves the Homes of Men
Raw as FUCK. Dominick Fernow needs no introduction and one of the dudes from Asymmetry
>Weakling - Dead as Dreams
more discerning people than me have spoken at length on this one
>Deafheaven - Roads to Judah
prefer this to Sunbather mostly for the pacing and higher concentration of good tracks
>Vegas Martyrs - Vancouver Missing Women
Fernow on guitar this time, Lapke(? cba to google his name, but it's Alberich) does noise and vocals (some of my favorites - really primal stuff)
>>65039956
whoops sorry, it's the guy from FFH not Alberich in Vegas Martyrs
I get them confused because they both play with Fernow in a black metal band and do noise stuff
>>65039159
I second this
pink is the new black
>>65039558
doubt you're still here but this is dank.
>>65036987
The most meh uninspired album I listened to half of lately
hvis lyset tar oss is the greatest black metal album of all time and if you don't see that you need to kys yourself pronto
