They have a clear message, wether you agree with it or not, that definetely pleases journalists. They are catchy, have their own sound (I'm not saying they are super-mega-unique, but no one can say their sound was overused by the time they played it), and Dennis is a energetic and charismatic frontman. This and Yank Crime are pretty much the only post-hardcore albums I don't find boring.
I guess the first couple of Fugazi records are okay and I love some other stuff like Unwound's last album and Spiderland that have post-hardcore influences but aren't 'pure' post-hardcore

It's just fairly normal sounding hardcore and post-hardcore. I think what throws people off is that the album presents itself as some sort of edgy shit.

The only bad thing about this album is that its title was wrong.
Honestly I've never heard another punk album that combines hardcore vocals/ riffing and catchy hooks in quite the same way. I guess the nu-metal meme is an easy shitpost to make because at times it is genuinely very accessible - I could certainly see some of my plebbiest friends enjoying some songs like Liberation Frequency, Summerholidays and New Noise if it weren't for the vocals (which they would almost definitely decry as unlistenable shit, before returning to their fucking Disturbed albums without a hint of irony or self-awareness)
My only wish is that this actually was the shape of the punk that came after it. If anyone has any recs for something similar that isn't just a list of nu-metal bands, please post.
