what is your favorite Blue Note album?
>>
Probably 'Andrew Hill - Judgment!', but that's not saying much, cuz there are literally hundreds of awesome records under this label.

this board is pathetic

Hey there /jazz/.
Long time lurker, seldom poster.
What version of "Black, Brown & Beige" would you recommend? Or should I go with a live performance?

Also I can't choose just one Blue Note release. Who could? But I heard Empyrean Isles today, thought it was tight.

threads about jazz never get any replies unless they're obvious b8 threads

unfortunately this is accurate. I've grew up tired of starting many /jazz/ generals and it didn't get any replies. Guess /mu/ dosn't listen to jazz at all.

I once took a road trip with my father, and I put this on while we were driving on the highway at night. Our conversation got really heavy and emotional, and to this day that's what I think of when I put this record on. Couldn't ask for a better record for reflecting and thinking about stuff from the past.

tough call, when pic related are just a few of their great albums, but I'd have to say The Amazing Bud Powell

Drunk on Thursday night and listening to Infant Eyes. You may think it's cool but it's not.

I don't know any version except the one recorded for RCA Victor (the second one on that list) - it's on the Duke Ellington Centennial box (disc 14) if you're download-savvy. if not, I can just upload for you. not sure about the bitrate, but it's great - Work Song is amazing

I haven't heard that many, but this is my favorite so far, along with Wayne Shorter's The All Seeing Eye. What should I listen to if I want more like these ?
>>
>>65018427
Got it thanks. Is there a version with Ella Fitzgerald? I might just listen to every version I can find desu. Did anyone else ever take a crack at it?

there's a song on Max Roach and Clifford Brown at Basin Street that gives me that same kind of suckerpunch to the gut feel that this album's first track gave me, called "The Scene is Clean"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJQa2S8LO4
tell me if I'm on the right track
>>
>>65018590
not an expert in Ellington (yet), but that's a good question. I know Come Sunday was reworked for his first Sacred Concert, sung by Esther Morrow (which is spectacular):

>>
>>65018694
Not really, I was looking for something fast and unpredictable, but not quite on the level of Cecil Taylor or other free jazz. The title track of Action pretty much sums up what I'm hoping to find more of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJoyv2UVC74
how's this?
>>
>>65018911
It's closer, but what I like the most about the Jackie McClean album is all of the strange, out of key notes and erratic modal changes. I really love stuff like that, both in and outside of jazz, and look for it wherever I can.

if you liked jackie so much, why don't you try his other albums? He got many good stuff
>>
>>65019104
I listened to a bit of One Step Beyond and it didn't seem to have the same style, but I'll try his later stuff. I was hoping that this kind of stuff was more common in jazz.

>>65019172
I've already listened to that one, actually, but thanks anyway. I loved the sax, clarinet, and trumpet parts, but the piano didn't interest me that much. It's definitely closer to what I'm looking for.

>>

>>65019231
Actually, I'm listening to Complete Communion by Don Cherry right now, and I think this is more of the kind of stuff I'm looking for.
>>
>>65019272
why not? he's the man when it comes to jazz production and mixing
>>
>>65019324
Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman are kings of that sound. essential avant garde jazz

I'd recommend brown rice by Cherry and the shape of jazz to come by Coleman
>>
>>65018193

There are exceptions. As the summerfags come rolling in expect more /jazz/ thread to end up in the archive as soon as they're posted. Unfortunately I don't know anywhere else that actually has a decent jazz community - when these threads get going on the occasions they fo they are easily some of the best threads in /mu/

This chart is fantastic, I'll have to check out these albums.
Blue Note held a dj night at my city last week, I was too tired to go but that's how I recognize the name hah
I own a couple of these albums, I'll definitely go on to explore the chart.
Cheers anon.

>>65018085
a lot of /mu/ finds jazz inaccessible :( the weekly jazz listening session is cool though
>>
>>65020750
His production is GOAT but that series of remasters he did in the mid 2000s are shit.
>>
Is there any jazz versions of Minha Namorada? For those who don't know it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkdsdQ2jKgU
>>
>>65022836
>jazz inaccessible
Is it though? I understand getting a full understanding off it can be difficult but I listen to a fair amount and I have very little music theory knowledge and still really enjoy it,
>>
>>65024516
The first few times I listened to Coltrane and Davis I just thought it was random saxophone/trumpet noises, hah
There have been a few albums I've really loved though. I'm sure that eventually I'll find my niche.
That's an issue a lot of people have though, just not clicking with the atmosphere, the feeling of jazz.

Yeah. Saying that I started with a lot of cool jazz which I find is easier to get into.

I am requesting the jazz chart which is divided by the genres and also included information about genres. If I remember right it is made by jtg.
And my favourite blue note record is probably Maiden Voyage or Byrd in Hand.

Is it the one with like 4 albums for each one cause I have that at home. I'll send it when I get of this shitty bus

Do you guys know a good place to download jazz?I mostly use spotify buy some albums are not available in there.

>>65027579
I get my jazz from What.CD. Have you tried looking there ? It has pretty much everything.
>>
>>65027607
I used to know a whole bunch about audio quality and would have passed the What.CD test but never got around to taking it, years later and I've forgotten most of the stuff I used to know, life is hell.

Reminder to come participate in the /blindfold test/

It isn't very difficult to learn it again. Literally everything you need to know is on the interview preparation site. Just make sure you study it carefully, because you only get three shots.
>>
>>65027607
unfortunately I dont have account on that site:(.I was thinking about maybe some blogs or something.
>>
>>65027579
soulseek?
>>
>>65027837
Just leave it open in another window while taking the interview, close it when you have to take a screenshot. Guaranteed pass
>>
>>65028038
Yeah, pretty much. I don't know why they even bother, it's easy as fuck to cheat on the interview.
