What's the deal with musicians and smack? Excepting coke (and weed, but does that even count?), across every era and genre, from Charlie Parker to Jimmy Page to Kurt Cobain and every prolific junkie artist inbetween, it seems that H has been the the #1 drug of choice for musicians everywhere. How much influence do you think heroin has had on music history? Also.. do any other dope users lurk /mu/? Where are you from, and what kinda gear do you get in your area? Describe your local dope scene. Here in the Seattle area, we only get Mexican black tar. And even though we're far north up from the border, most stuff that makes it up here is fire. Most folks smoke around here, and it seems only the really hardcore users shoot.

Heroin is just really really sad to me.

Well, I have dabbled with heroin and other opiates and I am not addicted and my experiences have been positive. Besides the fact that opiates make me throw up (although I don't care becuase I'm high), I don't have anything negative to say. Although this is mostly experience in snorting H as I've only smoked it a few times.

Because it feels really, really, really good. Better than any feeling in the world. Heroin is a superlative painkiller; not just physical pain but emotional pain too. A person who is hurting on the inside and finds heroin, or another opiate, will find that immediately all of their pain disappears. How good heroin and weed feel are not even in the same universe.

I'm not a smackhead, I haven't took any opiate in over a month. Like I said, I dabble and take them ocassionally. Most people will not care about throwing up on opiates because you are high. It's very simple.

But 'nodding out' is a bit of a misnomer. You're certainly still conscious and awake, but kinda trapped inside your mind where you don't want to move and your eyelids become very heavy.

I would argue that musicians (and artists in general) are among the saddest people, and perhaps heroin is a gateway out of that. It's a shame. Look at Jimmy Page, he was a god. Listen to the solo he plays on No Quarter from The Song Remains the Same. It's unbeatable. 6 years later in Knebworth after a couple years on heroin he was an absolute mess. And Celebration Day seems to suggest he never quite got his mojo back.

So to the first part of OP's comment:
The reason so many musicians use H (or smoke or become alcoholics or whatever) is kind of 3 fold:
1 - no one ever tells them no
2 - they are kind of making a living out of "breaking the rules" so these self-destructive acts are cool and rebelious. in other words, while if I drank whiskey all night every night and showed up to work in the morning reeking of smoke and BO, I would probably get fired and at the very least, would never have been promoted. Conversely, they do this and there are thousands of fans that say "he's so fucking cool."
3 - and this is the big one...many musicians, and I'd say most of the great, inventive ones, are bipolar and self medicate. They are able to write songs while in a manic state and they fuel the manic state for a while and then they are able to practice for 36 hours straight while in the depressive state.
other than that. I have no idea why anyone would even try H even once. You may be OK, but the evidence is pretty strong that there are strong odds it will ruin your life and kill you.

I definitely see the depression/self-medding thing in myself. That's why I started 3 years ago (I'm 19 now).. My parents had an explosive, horribly damaging and destructive divorce.. And of everything I tried, only H and my music gave me any sort of solace as I watched my wonderful life and promising future crumble before me and everything I held dear disappeared. In a sense, I see it as the next step after alcohol. If the booze isn't working well enough heroin is the next step. The alcohol and my music are the really the only things that keep me going.

Yeah, at 16 H was easier to obtain than booze.. But is there a step you can even go after you've worked up to the (s)mack-daddy of all hard drugs? God I hate myself for making that pun.. I mean meth is fun, and it certainly makes you less depressed, but it doesn't hit that deep down internal pain like dope does.

Heroin is the GOAT
I fucked around with the hard shit for a while, and nothing really compares to getting a good fucking nod going with some stupid cartoon playing in the background. The worst part for me wasn't the withdrawals. It wasn't the puking, the losing friends, or the stealing. It's the fact that I can't have it all day every day. I stopped just over a year ago, and I haven't had a single perfect day since, because no matter what you do, or where you are, or who you're with, you will never forget how much better it could be.

my friend gave me a bit and i smoked it in the same way as shown in op's pic, don't know what the method is called. you feel warm and happy. and the next day feels even more awesome, because you wake up feeling incredibly comfortable, albeit really lazy. i don't think i'll do heroin ever again, though. sure it feels nice just sitting down, doing nothing and having a blast, but it just kills your motivation. i've seen what it did to my friend, and now he's probably doomed to a life of dipping in and out of withdrawals until he od's or kills himself. the motherfucker even had a piss jar in his closet because he was too sick during his withdrawal to leave his room. i couldn't even begin to think how i could help him get rid of his addiction.
still, i'm glad i tried it once. no, you won't get addicted on the first try.
