what happened
We got a wave of contrarian hipster bs that just wanted to be different for the sake of it. We were no strangers to hipsters before that but at least then there was some kind of cohesive theme.
Now what's important is not being poppy and accessible, whether the music actually does anything interesting is besides the point.
You can thank the pretention of people like Kendrick Lamar and Lana Del Rey.
