Here's a starter, truly the archetypical metal album, from subject matter to song composition to album structure.
All of it rendered flawlessly, creating a truly exemplary metal album.
So what other albums fit the bill for their respective genres?

YES
>>64802712
no, you stop
cemetary gates alone shits on anything most bands have ever done
>>64802695
Welp, it does have a single flaw though: "I Ain't Superstitious". But other than that, probably the best thrash record i've heard.
>>64802669
Solid choice, solid indeed.
Here's another, for a very different genre:

>Cemetery Gates
Fucking hell, this. That song alone is enough to hang Pantera's reputation on.
classic.
>>64802759
It's not even Pantera's most coherent release
Vulgar Display is tighter in every way and a better example of their style and sound

A DREADED SUNNY DAY

>most bands
The Smiths aint most bands.
Ride the Lightning is overrated as fuck. Far from being the best metal album, it's not even the best thrash album. Not even the best Metallica album. Not even the best metal album of 1984.
OP has shit taste.

I have no idea why I could never get into this album. I've gone back to it at least 15 times over the years (I'm old), thinking perhaps I missed something or that I just wasn't in the right place in my head. I know it's not a bad record, but I just can't get it to click for me.
"Peace Sells" and "Wake Up Dead" are fucking solid songs, I'll give it that. The remaster (which I thought would help me get into it more easily) actually sounds like shit compared to the original, so I'm back to trying it out again this summer.
Illmatic
>>64802669
wrong; filosofem
Genuinely, the best pop album ever recorded. Every single song is amazing. When you really listen to it and sort through all the layers of sound and vocals, and her how they merge, interlock and swirl together, there's no way to deny how solid this album still is, to this day.
>>64802896
what is the best thrash album then?
>>64804002
Filosofem doesn't have shit on De Mysteriis. For atmosphere alone, nevermind the drumming and croaked vocals, it's got Filosofem beat. However, I find it to be the pinnacle of Varg's young output. Everything really came together on that one.

I know right fucking classic
Pop-Punk
>>64804078
>>64802695
>>64802561
This is.
Criminally overlooked. This album was the best thrash album of the 80s, hands down.

The vocals on De Mysteriis suck balls and ruin the album.

You don't like the conjuring or good mourning/black Friday?
This or Ziggy
>>64804165
>>64804220
p mediocre desu
>>64804236
I think people have that idea because they aren't "typical" high-pitch black metal vocals. It may not be your taste but it's a unique style and choice which really does compliment the murkiness and malevolence of the music.
Or they suck, whichever.

>is this a le trole
name something better.
>>64804272
Man, I don't know why. I just don't know. I don't dislike them at all, it's just something that won't click. There's some Slayer stuff like that for me, too. It's weird.
>>64804308
Oh well. I tried.
>>64804041
100% agree
>>64804165
i've never even heard of this record before. cool man, i'll def give this a listen
>>64804086
no way
de mytheris is just juvenile, angsty, unoriginal and kitsch
filosofem is mature, extremely minimal but well written, emotional and never boring, also varg's lyrics on filo are great
