If you are a total beginner and want to create/make/produce music (or something that resembles music) you should first think about two basic things first:

what music you want to create

>why you want to create music

whoever wrote that just know that you're a cunt and everyone hates you
>>
>>64789243
What's wrong with trying to articulate why you want to? Not the guy who wrote that, but it seems like a pretty open ended question. Like "just because I feel like it" seems like a legitimate answer

Need to get a MIDI interface first! Really want to though. Been getting some cool sounds manually but I'm ready to step it up.
>>
>>64792808
>Need to get a MIDI interface first!
I would recommend getting an audio interface that has midi. Usually usb midi devices are either cheap crap, or fancy devices that cost as much as a decent audio interface that already has midi.

That said, it's not totally unprogrammable as-is. You do have to go through a few hoops to get programming software that runs on modern OSes.
>>
>>64792950
Hm, alright. Which one do you recommend? I actually need a good way to record anyway.
>>
>>64793628
the focusrite 2i4 is only $35 or so more than the 2i2 (so $145), and comes with 2 more outputs. They both have 2 audio inputs, but only the 2i4 has midi

these days, it doesn't really matter what audio interface you get, they tend to be the same quality unless you spend extra money for crazy good shit like an Apogee Duet
>>
Bumpe from page 8

Real talk, no scrubs plz.

I've been doing some shit for a film soundtrack, and I cxan simulate basically everything and it sound like not a synth except for high note brass.
Strings, no problem, deep brass, no problem, but high brass always seems to come out like some shite 80s synth. Wat do/tips/etc?
>>
>>64790783
I would advise getting a good saxapone library instead. That way you can write your own sax licks and not have to worry about isolating premade licks.

When 2 sounds are put together in a recording, especially if they're real instruments with wide frequency ranges (like the piano) it becomes very difficult to isolate them from each other. Nigh on impossible to do 100% without losing anything.

I would recommend kontakt 4 or 5 VST with the VSL tenor sax library

Not as bad as it sounds.
By which I mean composition wise you're fine, but sound wise you're way off. If you hd a decent sounding drumkit and a synth that sounded like a real instrument, you could pass this off as smoky jazz. The potential is there, you just need to learn how to produce.

this used to be somewhat expensive, now it's not since they're dropping support on it because it's hard to make money off of devices you have already sold

it's still great because it has 4 mic pres and a bunch of line ins and outs, so I still break it out for when I need to mic drum kits

otherwise I use an Audient iD22, which sounds much better, but only has 2 inputs

I've been an instrumentalist for a long time now, but I recently got into producing.

I made an electronic track for a project I'm working on. Considering that I usually don't come anywhere near electronic music in my own work this is somewhat odd, although I do think that it fits with the other tracks I'm working on for the project.

I'm a complete beginner production wise and I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some feedback on this track, both regarding production and the track itself:

https://soundcloud.com/dankmemevespertine

This is a demo and I'm aware it needs a better mix.
>>
>>64798840
first off, try to avoid soundcloud links in /prod/ threads, in the future.

- low end on the pad synth is awful and boomy. if it's a layered synth, drop that layer. if not, eq it out and you can bump the volume on the synth up for more presence.
- replace that low end with some proper bass or a better low-end layer.
- ease up on the phaser.
- kick drum is awful - throw it out and use something else with better low end and less of an acoustic top.
- don't know if it's the sustain on the piano, the sample library or the reverb but that piano at the end needs work. sounds shrill and muddy all at the same time. high velocities on those notes are probably compounding the issue as well.

generally muddy and indistinct mix; makes it hard to diagnose without multitracks on hand, but don't post those here.

not inclined to comment on music itself.

fair enough I'm not trying to single you out and be a cunt, although I might of come across like that.
I don't always give out production advice if I'm not 100% comfortable, unless someone asks something specific like "are my drums too loud?" or "How does a compressor work?" as I think quite often a lot of that sort of thing is subjective, unless of course its way out in the mix, but you can still listen and give feedback on how things sound to you. After all opinions are just that, opinions, but yeah giving out wrong technical advise is probably not so smart

Did I fail to mention? You live with your mother. You are a fat fucking fuckup, she's probably so sick of you already. So sick of having to do everything for you all goddamn day, every day, for a grown man who spends all his time on 4chan posting about social justice on /prod/. Just imagine this. She had you, and then she thought you were gonna be a scientist or an astronaut or something grand, and then you became a NEET. A pathetic /prod/ ruining NEET. She probably cries herself to sleep everyday thinking about how bad it is and how she wishes she could just disappear. She can't even try to talk with you because all you say is "So transparent lol." You've become a parody of your own self. And that's all you are. A sad little man laughing in the dark by himself as he prepares to indulge in the same old dance that he's done a million times now. And that's all you'll ever be.

How do i get good at VST string ensemble instrumentation?

For example, most of the Dark Souls 1-3 OST is made using virtual instruments, yet it sounds really close to the real thing. How do they do all that legato stuff and such using virtual instruments?

I have Ableton Live 9 Suite and it comes with a bunch of orchestra instrument packs, but haven't been able to utilize them well at all.

I assume you have to make use of clever songwriting/layering etc. to hide the synthethic sounding features of digital orchestra instrumentation.
>>
Is anyone here into sound design?
Like sound effects for film/games.
How do you get started with this stuff?
I mean i already have my trusty DAW, midi controller, monitors and other hardware, i've been making music for a long time, but recently i've been getting really interested in just making sound effects
>>
>>64803549
Although I don't make sound effects for films and games I do Make almost all of my own sounds, I'd say 90% of my time in the studio is Sound design and maybe 10% making actual music/arranging.

I guess how you get started depends on what sort of sounds you want to design? Like if you have a sci-fi film you want to sound design for then I'm guessing you'll be looking at making a lot of metallic sounding sounds and pads and things with long reverbs and atmospherics?

One way to start is to find a scene in a film you like and stick that into your DAW, remove the original soundtrack and start arranging your own using synths, samples and effects, just like any other sound design I guess?

I'm not a FL user but I have a friend that uses it and has done for about 10 years now. He makes good music and nobody would have any idea what DAW he uses to make his music just by listening to it.
Also 9th Wonder used Fruity loops on a lot of his productions before switching to Maschine.

new to these /prod/ threads but i need your help. ive been making music for about 8 months now and i've always gotten feedback about how my low end is very muddy. i know little about music production, so im asking you guys for some tips on how to get that right EQ

>>64805521
i honestly think the software you use to make music doesn't really matter, as long as you know how to use said program to its limits and get the best out of it. i still use audacity because i can't afford any fancy programs and because i've pretty much mastered it and can figure how to make (almost) any of the sounds i want using just the program. i also use renoise on occasion for when audacity can't provide the things i need, but my knowledge of renoise is not that much.

>>64806506
Change up your drum samples, they're boring. Find something more interesting than just a 808 crash every bar, it gets repetitive. If you're struggling to find decent samples you should download the Battery and Maschine libraries from Native Instruments. The drums get lost somewhere during the second part of your drop where you introduce that extra melody.

>>
>>64806322
The trick with the low end is that you actually need less than you think. In most cases with the bass, you can create the illusion of a really fat low end by actually emphasizing the upper frequencies of the bass sound. Even if it's just a simple sine wave bassline, you can use distortion (maybe on a parallel signal) to create more high frequencies that draw attention to the lower frequencies without them actually being that loud.

In addition to that, you want to make sure you don't have a lot of overlap in the low end, so try not to make your kick and bass play at the same frequency at the same time.

For the vocalists here, how do you not sound bored as fuck when you sing? My some miracle I have the best voice out of everyone in my shitty garage rock/punk band and they want me to record vocals, the problem is that I just sound bored, even when I start to strain my voice.

More of a general question than a /prod/ thing but didn't wanna make a whole thread about it.

>>
>>64810642
It's more to do with the tonality of your vocals, ie - the way you were born. It's something you can train through self practice. I'm not too sure how you should train your voice because it's going to be different for everyone else but just find a style and stick with it. If it's boring sounding then maybe ride with it.
>>

Over the course of 3 years of production, I got out a dozen singles, two EPs, several soundtracks and am sitting on about 500 unfinished tracks.

>>64810742
This. Been messing around with FL for a year and a half already, practically every day. I have 2 folders full of various stuff. They are to me like scribbles in a notepad. I see potential in, like, a dozen of them.

Well, "master has failed more times than student has even tried", I guess.
>>
>>64811121
Are you doing it full time or?

Fuck, I have to drop everything and start composing for real. I'm so inefficient it's amazing, really.
>>
>>64810429
I engineer for over 10 different clients, some whos mixes have been featured in setlists on BBC and XMRadio. My clients tracks have easily over half a million total plays on soundcloud (which is not that good really. Some of my clients are better promoted than others) and I work for DSCVRSounds network on SoundCloud as a channel manager for @deephouse.

Eventually I want to be a teacher in a recording arts school/university.
>>

>>
>>64811486
Makes me feel a little better about myself now lol. But still, for a year and a half I didn't manage to finish a single piece (if I don't count the two 1 minute long baroque pieces). I don't even know what it is anymore. Lack of inspiration, knowledge, laziness... I guess I have serious self-discipline issues.
>>
>>64810832
Thanks, I'll keep going down the "boring" route as my bandmates say it has a certain charm to it, I've tried altering my voice naturally but my nasally punk voice is incredibly obnoxious, though I guess that's the point to an extent.
>>
>>64810429
I get in the studio as much as possible, but that's not really all that much. Usually most Sunday's I get a good 6-8 hours in and maybe a few evenings for a couple of hours in the week.
Having a full time job and being self employed doesn't help, although sometimes like today work isn't ready for me so I got a good day of sound design in.

I shit out an album from start to finish in 24-72 hours.
I do this roughly once every 3 months.

In between I don't make music at all really. It's a cathartic thing which is why I would never dream of charging for it. Been doing that for about 15 years now I guess. Besides rare occasions when music was for a specific purpose (soundtracks, old university work etc) I never go back and rework or edit anything. I like my compositions to be reflections of the moment they were created and what I was experiencing or how I felt at that time. Guess I've done about 700 tracks with about 3-400 still being around in some form.

>>
>>64812564
I did an undergraduate in music technology and am just finishing up a PhD in music by composition (although it is non-traditional). I also work in the industry in a technical capacity.

The personal music is definitely variable in quality but as a reflection of me it serves its purpose well. I myself vary in quality too. It's really for my benefit and a few others, I don't promote it or anything.

The production process varies massively too. These days the albums are mostly made live, one was made entirely on an ipad, one was made entirely on aeroplanes, some are generative and require almost no work at all etc.

Focusrite interfaces are complete dogshit and have AWFUL drivers. The preamps in them are crap as well.

Save up for a nice RME interface or go out and grab a Roland Quad/Duo capture. Those are in the same price range and have much better preamps and drivers.
>>
>>64793628
The Steinberg interfaces are legit. I have a UR242, I have had M-Track and Audibox 22VSL in the past. The 242 is about 240$ CAD.

>>64813662

I would agree that the RME drivers are probably the best. Focusrite drivers are trash-tier in comparison but you don't need to save up as much from an RME. I've got a UR22 and the preamps are fucking great for the price (Yam d-pre's). The driver is no-frills, no-bullshit. It's literally just this picture. RME is for people looking for specifically built in dsp-geared mixing and advanced routing.
>>
>>64813662
Yeah. that's because Focusrite interfaces are dirt cheap(espically if you get them secondhand) and they look nice and sleek. In reality, they are poorly slapped together boxes with shit preamps and AWFUL asio drivers. Don't bother with them if you're actually recording decent instruments/analog synths/hardware etc.

>>64813682
Yeah I've really been looking into the Steinberg interfaces lately(I have the 2i4 right now and I want to dump it as soon as possible). What kind of feature's does it offer compared to the Focusrite(other then the vastly superior drivers and preamps)?

Aren't the really good RME interfaces like the Babyface usually pretty expensive??
>>
>>64813954
All RME stuff is relatively expensive. I have the HDSPe card + multiface for my live rig. I was able to buy it second hand for around 600 GBP.

Steinbergs drivers are relatively straight-forward. There's no excess features or anything, just the ability to change sample rate and ASIO buffer, that's it. At least with the UR22 drivers. What kind of features are you looking for? Also the preamps in the UR22 are probably not as good as the 2i4's. If anyone should get a Focusrite it should be for the preamps, it's the best thing about the interface but it's about the only good thing about it desu. It's really down to what you need out of the interface. UR22 is solid construction, the internals are quality and it doesn't look like anything could have the potential to break easily.

What can I add to this to flesh it out a bit more? There's gonna be (original) vocals on it eventually so keep that in mind. The first half is just the instrumental and the second half has a random acapella on it to give you an idea of what the vocals are gonna sound like.

pretty much what >>64806887 said. You wanna keep your low end simple and try to never overlap things, which is what sidechaining/ducking is for mostly. Also, cut everything below 20 or 30 hz, because they're garbage frequencies that you can't hear and just create conflict, and unless you're on festival sound systems you won't get any more "feel" out of it.

Trump has
-No concept of foreign policy
-No knowledge of science
-Limited knowledge of global economics
-Incredibly limited knowledge of history and of the political process
-Completely unrealistic plans for social reform that will only increase social unrest
-A history of multiple bankruptcies, despite that business is supposedly his strong suit

Presets are fine though, but you run the risk of your record sounding exactly like the one that came before it.
