Feedback for feedback? ;)
I am 18 years old and this is one of my first tracks (EDM/electro). Feedback would be great. Thanks.
>>64770761
Hard panning, eh? Try pulling the mix closer together on Dominoes, and make more use of subtle stereospread instead.
EQ those vocals. Too much low end for their own good, which leads to them not fitting well into the mix.
>>64770914
Tight mix, really well produced track. Vocals not so much my taste, but nevertheless a nice contrast.
You've done right not to mix in too much reverb and Bass, like many here, trying to conceal their lack of skill.
So far best in the thread of what I've heard. Lyrics edgy as hell though.
>>64770933
How about some variety in that arpeggio? Otherwise, driving and cool stuff. Could use some more Sidechaining between Bass and Kick though? Idk.
>>64772000
Horrendous management of your lower frequencies. Check for monocompatibility and EQ the fuck out of those resonances.
>>64772041
Quite good for your young age. But please skrew those filthy presets, and get some own style other than genericness.

I liked the guitar slides and the glitchy hi hat flourishes. It's really chill and laid back, which normally that style of beats bores me, but this is pretty neat.
>>64770908
I like your flow and I think you rap pretty well. However, I'm not too much of a fan of the beat. I feel like its too laid back for some of the faster lyrics you spit out. I think a higher energy beat would accent your flow on this better.
>>64771958
Listened to beg the air again. I've heard it a few times at this point from these threads but it's starting to grow on me. The overdubbed vocals harmonize well and the acoustic playing, while simple, veers away from tedium and repetitiveness. Also the soft static in the background throughout is a nice calming touch. Cool stuff man really.
>>64772200
Listened to Reserver. Was not what I expected. I like the ominous vibe going on in the track. While I dug the off-kilter and distorted synths that were manipulated and altered as the song went on, I wasn't completely hooked in. It sounds alright to me but I wasn't super impressed, though I guess it's just not for me. I can tell you put effort into it though.
>>64773316
This beat goes pretty hard. It's really intense and I like how you incorporated the siren samples into the mix. I like that mix wise it is really chaotic and there's a lot happening at once, with that being said I'm interested to see how it would sound more clean. Not that there is a problem with it being mixed the way it is, I'm just curious to hear the alternative.

already heard the track before and liked it but here's feedback anyways: Love the banjo. The chord progression is nice and your voice is actually pretty good too man. It fits the music extremely well. It makes me think that just a little bit more power and emotion behind your voice at a pivotal point in a song would sound awesome. The ambient sounds filling in the space help make the track sound more full and expansive. Smart sound design in that sense.
>>64775752
This quickly descended into madness lol. The use of delay to continually build this wall of noise is pretty neat but I don't see myself really enjoying it on a musical level. It's more just kind of a interesting idea if nothing else.
>>64776425
Not too bad. Your vocals could use some work, they sound kind of mediocre and don't have that sense of emotion to them. I think some of production is cool but I don't think the drum beat or the tempo changes once the entire time. You should try mixing it up just a bit, have a section or two with a different beat to it so as to add variety and catch the listener's attention.
>>64777078
Nice ambient, spacey atmosphere. The strings and the pads sound super soft and calming. This works a double edged sword though, I do find my interest waning just a little bit as the track progresses. Maybe some more subtle sounds/synths/different melodies/harmonic progression would be a good idea to compensate for that.
>>64777127
this is super upbeat and catchy and feel good all wrapped up in one! Your voice sounds kind of like the stereotypical indie pop female singer voice (to me at least) but it's not offense in any way and you sing well. I also like how present the bass is, really gives the track bounciness.
>>64779096
Listened to play. Sounds like a mixture of the softer side of Scale the Summit and emo mixed together. The music, while lo-fi, sounds tight and pretty cool. I would love to hear vocals on this, and some better production.

Has potential. Sometimes it feels like it's "changing just for the sake of changing", though. (The one problem a lot of experimental producers grapple with.) Try layering a bit more, and try making it a bit more cohesive. Could use some mixing improvements too. Try some multiband compression and EQ on your leads, and more master compression on the tracks that need it. And the levels of various instruments are kind of messed up in a bunch of the tracks.
>>64786585
Melody's kind of nice. Needs a lot of mixing work. Definitely needs a HPF for all the mud in the lows.
>>64784857
Not bad. I don't like the vocals (in the tracks that have them), though.
>>64784958
Some potential. Needs mixing work. I think you're compensating for level issues with overcompression. Composition and arrangement is kind of boring in many of the tracks, but a lot better than some of the other shit in this thread, and a bit better than many stereotypical "EDM producers".

I really dig the production and synths on this. Very big scope, has a nice Vangelis-ish flavor on it, that flips into that more house. I would put some of that big reverb on some of those drums to bring them into the mix, especially the clap, but it's pretty solid as it stands. I like the progression too.
>>64786962
>I would put some of that big reverb on some of those drums to bring them into the mix, especially the clap
That sounds like a good idea. I'm going to experiment with that. Thanks!
>>64786857
thanks for the feedback on this. >>64784958
Actual usefull feedback is awesome! Mixing issues are due to actual mixingissues in various shitty environments, not overcompression (I only use slight compression to get the level up a bit. All of the balancing is mixing, like it should be). But I'm still pretty happy with it.
My biggest issue is definately track composition, so I fall back on reliable patterns that work to sort of "showcase" the actual production often. If you have any tips, they'd be much appreciated!
>>64787102
welcome. only other note would be to note go overboard with it. it's about adding just enough reverb to seat it in the mix, and have it sound like less of a sample. you might even use diffferent reverb than the one on the synths. something more of a room reverb than a hall reverb, or if you use a plate reverb, a plate that's pretty short duration.

Yeah I've read these threads for a while, and I think I'm one of the very few people who ever gives actual feedback and not just "lol sounds good m8". I don't ever post my own tracks in these threads because I don't care about marketing, just feedback, and this is not a place to get decent feedback.
And yeah, I wasn't sure if it was overcompression or what, but the balance of elements in the mix isn't right in "Traffic". It's a bit better in some other tracks, like "Famine", but that one needs some EQ and/or rearranging work (I think some of the low end is taking up too much space/time; might be better to mess with ADSR and/or note length rather than EQ; not sure).
>My biggest issue is definately track composition, so I fall back on reliable patterns that work to sort of "showcase" the actual production often.
I grapple with it a lot, too. I think a ton of electronic and dance producers struggle with it. What some people do is first compose their entire tracks with the most boring, weak-sounding piano and drum sounds possible, then pick the actual soft synths or samples when they're done. I don't personally like that method, but it works for many great producers.
I'd say experiment with rhythm and syncopation a bit more. I'm still a pretty new producer, but the one thing I found in common with my favorite artists is that they were very clever with timing and syncopation, even when it's subtle or only occasional. Syncopation or unusual rhythms can be a bit "verboten" in mainstream dance genres, though, so if you want to stay within a certain genre it might not be a good idea.
My personal method for growing my own creativity and compositional ability is taking some drugs, carefully analyzing some of my favorite music, taking notes on it, and then experimenting with what I think the artists are doing (without mimicking them *too* much). Obviously, you can do that without the drugs, but they are a significant boon to me personally.
>>64787396
thank you!
yeah, i have to work on my volume sometimes (not a "loudness-war" kind of gal). the way i created the glitchy sounds was through a synth program called "helm" and some of the ableton effects.
also, nice björk reference :3
>>64786582 (city nights demo)
it's not bad for an early build. it's not bad melodically, the synths are decent, the drums are good. i'd say the mixing isn't all that great; it get's a little muddy at points. i also think it could use some sidechaining.

>>64787680
Liking a lot of this, but I'd probably like it more if the guitars were produced differently. Bring 'em a little bit more into the foreground. Also, speaking as a guitarist, some of the playing seems to be sort of rushed. I don't mean that in a tempo kind of way; I mean that there is a certain nervousness to it, like you really want to get it over with.

>>64788109
I generally don't like pop music, so you may have to take this with a grain of salt, since I think some of this criticism could apply to most pop music.
- Progressions are very vanilla and predictable.
- Mixing is pretty bad all around.
- I see what you were trying to do with the switch to the drums in the break, starting at 2:27, but the rhythm and timing just isn't right. I assume it's intended to be a little jarring, but it's not a pleasant-jarring IMO.
- The whole track is just the same loops brought in and brought out, repeatedly. Skip around to different parts of the track, over and over, and you can see how boring and repetitive it all is.
- Outro is pretty much the only non-boring part of the track. Piano playing is acceptable but not great.

I'm not the person who wrote the song, but could you elaborate what is so bad about the mixing? I see people make this critique on songs where I didn't really see the problem and it makes me paranoid that my mixing is awful in a way I can't even hear.
>>64788109

>- I see what you were trying to do with the switch to the drums in the break, starting at 2:27, but the rhythm and timing just isn't right. I assume it's intended to be a little jarring, but it's not a pleasant-jarring IMO.
To clarify this, I meant the stretch from 2:27 to 2:45 doesn't feel right rhythm-wise. And I'm >>64787675.
>>64788451
Where DO you go to get good feedback? I agree this is a terrible place for it but I don't really know how to go about getting good feedback from other places.
>>64788451
>>64788381
I get what you mean with the drums. I think I'll just have to write new drums for that part and maybe have them be a bit more dry.
Also yeah the mixing is pretty bad and that's something I'm still learning and working on right now.
>>64788538
hey it's >>64786694 here - my feedback advice would be to look for forums/facebook groups/etc. centered around your genre of choice and/or general production. I will say straight up that some of those groups may be huge dicks initially (I've certainly seen that in action,) but if you can get over the usually internet hazing nonsense, you'll find that they'll be exceedingly real and honest with the critiques, and you'll get better faster.

>and it makes me paranoid that my mixing is awful in a way I can't even hear.
I can almost assure you it is. Even the best mixers on Earth usually spend minimum 5 years (sometimes way longer) ear training and practicing before they start spotting the small issues.
I honestly know almost nothing about mixing, and am still learning on how to mix my own tracks in a good way, but I think there are some pretty blatant issues there.
Just things like:
- Lead is too quiet relative to everything else for a lot of it
- Claps don't cut through the mix much
- Kick probably has some frequency overlap issues. It barely cuts through at all, and sounds extremely weak. Needs sidechaining (or if there is any, more things need to be sidechained to it) and/or volume shaping and/or arrangement changes and/or EQ and/or compression and/or .... Some level adjustments might also help.
- The lows and low-mids need some EQing. I think they're sucking some energy out.
- Pads stay at a fairly constant high-ish volume. They shouldn't take so much space in the mix, for the whole mix.
- Not much panning to get things out of the way of each other.
In general, things sound kind of crowded, muddy, and "constant" due to the poor mixing. There's almost no balance.
>>64788538
I have not found a single place yet, unfortunately. I was actually thinking of starting an imageboard or messageboard just for high-quality music production feedback and discussion, with strict rules, free FLAC/WAV uploads for sharing, etc. But to do that, I'd need to find intelligent and critical people who would migrate over and contribute. And based on most of the posters I see in the /prod/, Bandcamp, and Soundcloud thread... I definitely don't think I'd find them on /mu/. So, it's probably not worth my effort.
>>64788582
Good, professional mixing is probably the hardest and most frustrating thing to learn as a producer. I know I sure as hell am not there yet myself.
>>64788737
