I always thought the live versions sounded fuller, probably because of the drums. If you like 70s KC I wholeheartedly recommend listening to a few live albums. a lot of the songs sound like they were made just to be toyed with live.

I gave FoaBP another chance this week. reason I posted it is because I was blown away by the atmosphere on some of the less metal songs. the last few minutes of Anesthetize for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSEQZ8reJA4

their space rock days were best, I agree, but I like the way (especially recently) SW brings together all of the different styles he's covered in his career in a way where they actually complement each other.
>>
>>64760062
It's mediocre as fuck, they've gone from being one of the most underrated bands in the world with their debut to being one of the most overrated.

PS your opinion on PT is shit
>>

Oh Anesthetize is a great track on its own, its just that I feel Wilson's last albums with PT kind of left the band off on a sour note. Despite great tracks like Anesthetize and Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, alot of the stuff from In Absentia onward never clicked with me.

His solo work is amazing though.

Most of Prog and me in the past year have been me realizing much of it feels "artsy/complex" to the point of sounding insincere and geeky. Also the past year of Prog and me has been realizing that Canterbury and Krautrock were where it was really at and that most symphonic prog isn't that good.

Liking Yes and King Crimson is right in the middle of fashion with the hipster crowd where I'm from. Modern prog is super uncool though.
>>
>>64760239
I guess they were relatively one-dimensional albums for him, like he just suddenly fell in love with the metal riff and almost built entire albums around them.

>>64760372
I am not, only just found out what that is

>>64760345
my recent experience has been almost the opposite, re-opening myself to less /mu/approved (dare I say reddit-tier) prog and realizing more traditional prog can be great, too. i don't disagree that symphonic prog can get stale, and that the canterbury scene and krautrock sound so refreshing in comparison when that's most of what you've been exposed to
>>
is this ska?
>>
>>64760488
Some prog is very appealing to hipsters, though, stuff like Magma, King Crimson, and Henry Cow all have that sort of appeal. Not saying that people who like those artists are hipsters, just that the music seems to have that appeal. Yes, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator and Camel seem to so-so, while ELP, and the vast majority of modern prog/prog metal is highly unfashionable.

I'm pretty sure the admins are just taking the piss out of prog fans, but there are people who unironically think they are superior for liking prog. All the posts they make about how 4/4 is inferior (which is obviously sarcastic), there are people who believe that.

There's a fucking hilarious youtube comment on Sithu Aye (who is garbage, but for other reasons) with a guy talking about how the fact that Sithu mostly uses 4/4 is "the opposite of progressive". It's pretty fucking horrible but these people exist and I have overheard some of their conversations at gigs. Most are underage as well (understandably, with such a limited view of music).

Prog got me damn tired lately, I check for new bands/bands I didn't check out and usually fail to find something new. Either modern or old prog.
I only stick to releases by bands I'm already into though, last rather proggy release I got into is this one, and this is one of the best tracks I've ever heard containing one of the best riffs I've ever heard as well.

>>64761820
fwiw I do find the title track to be very emotional, especially live

but the humour is just in repetition and beating the idea of him being sad into the ground, i don't think it's sincere, it's laughing at the fact people think he's sad more than laughing at him being sad

>>
>>64762020
depends on your scope of emotion. it's never joyful or extremely sad, but there's a visceral edge to their music (especially belew) that speaks to other emotions like obsession, insanity, anger etc.

also even just taking that linear look of what emotions music can/should express, i don't see how anyone couldn't be moved by matte kudasai or starless

Canterbury Scene music falls under the heading of progressive rock too, though.

Caravan are a fucking great band actually.
>>
>>64762417

>>
Is there a bridge between bands like Radiohead, Elbow and Doves vs Porcupine Tree? What makes one prog and the other not?
>>

>>64762514
>>64762734
When did I say that it wasn't prog? Why are you so angry?
>>
>>64762694
Dunno about Elbow and Doves but there's no way Radiohead are prog, and it's always confused me when people say they are.

I think Porcupine Tree are "prog" because they adapt the concept album, lengthy songs, and influences from both psychedelic rock and classical music, plus having a generally higher level of musicianship than most rock bands. The only way you could associate Radiohead with progressive rock is through potential classical and jazz influences to their music, but even then IDM and electronic music seems to far more important.
>>
>>64762256
>implying

I'd literally put 6 or 7 songs from Insurgentes above all of those.
>>
>>64762694
Gazpacho maybe? I consider Radiohead to be prog anyway, i think it's pretty dumb and counterproductive to have strict genre categories. and they were influenced enough by krautrock and focused enough on atmosphere that its worth at least mentioning them alongside prog

i have heard some people describe radiohead as art rock, whatever that really means. you probably won't find a consistent description of what that genre entails, but maybe that's the bridge you're looking for
