I just don't understand how people enjoy rap/hip hop music. I've tried to listen to it, and I just can't get into it whatsoever.

Anytime I hear a rap/hip hop song all I can think of while listening to it is "you know what would improve this song? singing"

Why do people like rap? I just get the feeling that it's for less talented people to make their voice heard in some way.

I'm using an anime image because all the pictures I have are anime girls because I don't post on this board.
>>
heh

I think you haven't listened to good rap / hip hop yet
Also I don't understand how can people enjoy metal music

try looking at the vocals like a different kind of poetry, which they are, in a way.

I don't understand why someone would exclusively have photos of anime girls on their computer.

metal is a lot more interesting than rap though
>>
>>64754590
those are some hot opinions but I'll have to disagree with them
>>
Plenty of times rap, spoken word, yelling, or grunting can be a better form of expression than singing. What is it about rap that you don't like? The lack of melody? The attitude? The rhythms?

Threads like this where OP is a lazy fuck who can't just look through the catalog for the exact same question he is asking should be immediately deleted.

Why would I look through the catalogue on a board I don't post on?
>>
>>64754608
ok but rap really isn't nearly as varied of a genre and there is far more experimental and avant-garde metal than rap.

i think most people who don't limit themselves to one genre and have been on this board for longer than 3 months will prefer metal

>>64754670
i meant metal would be preferred. there's far more interesting metal being released weekly than the majority of rap I've heard. i'm not even a metalhead either

I just don't understand how people enjoy anime. I've tried to watch them, and I just can't get into them whatsoever.

Anytime I see an anime all I can think of while watching it is "you know what would improve this? real people "

Why do people like anime? I just get the feeling that it's for dumb weeaboos to fap over.

I'm using an album image because all the pictures I have are albums because I don't post on this board.

Metal is way more varied than hip hop, though.

Hip hop fans always play up the variety of hip hop. I feel like there was a lot more in the past, but now it all rides the same sort of wave.

What kind of rap have you been exposed to? If all you've ever listened to is like top 40 pop garbage, you're really not getting a good representation of the genre

public enemy are great, not because of their political message, but because they had fantastic production on their side

You're sort of right, I could imagine how someone who doesn't actively follow rap could get the impression that it's all "Drake/Future/Fetty Wap/Young Thug/Travis Scott rap/R&B/trap" stuff. But, there really is a lot of experimentation going on in rap music still, it just isn't in the popular forms. Just look at Death Grips, they are consistently putting out crazy, genre-expanding music that is always fresh and actually really good, but you'll never hear that shit on the radio.
>>
>>64755115

Rap got a lot of Jewish funding because the majority of rappers were shown an up-front cash payment. They pushed the format into the mainstream with extreme prejudice, harming the industry as a whole. It was a fantastic business decision, but the quality has spiraled out of control.

The reason a lot of people like it is for its shock value and simplistic musical elements, allowing the majority of the population (inherently unmusical) to relate to what is given to them inside of the rap "package".

Nevertheless there were innovators who actually put thought into the process and the product - examples such as A Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde amongst others.

Personally, I prefer instrumental hip hop to rap and hip hop with vocals, but there are good exceptions to this as well. To me it's like 2/3 dependent on the producer and the rest comes from the rapper (assuming the rapper (not Viper) exists). You should probably start with stuff like Onra's Chinoiseries or something similar. It's instrumental and I dig it.
>>
>>64755996
too mainstream

>>64756083
for me it's 80% beat 20% lyrics
only prerequisite is bearable voice (no autotune, singing, or whining (unless danny brown))

I agree with both of these 5's. Likewise, I can enjoy SOME anime and SOME rap, but overall, nah.

>>64755875
Is there no grey area? Would you consider rap with high production and sampling to fall under hip hop, or is it turntable DJs exclusively?

The bearability of autotune depends on the song (if I may call it that) as a whole, and occasioinally I find it a good thing to hear it used. Lately I've listened BONES and Gvcci Hvcci a lot. They seem to hit me in the spot at the moment.

Nah hip-hop can be pretty good. You might not like current pop rap (I think some is decent) but it's a genre with interesting roots and lots of influence and importance to modern pop
>>
Hip-hop as a genre doesn't really have "great" masterworks but there's a lot out there that's still pretty good.

Your issue is probably that you're used to other kinds of music where the focus is on conveying the emotion directly through the notes. Generally but not as a rule, hip-hop consciously emphasizes creating its mood or "vibe" through its production choices, which may include things like samples that create an abstract context (so for an example, a sample of someone playing the piano may be more about the mood the scene with the pianist conveys or the mood the quality of the sample conveys than the note choice). While in other genres, clarity of performance is often the goal with it, in hip-hop the goal is to create a mood ala impressionism and then modulate it.

While obviously these rules are not rigid (note choice is obviously a part of vibe and production and timbre affects how notes are perceived), generally the emphasis is what distinguishes hip-hop from other popular genres.

You have to think of it as poetry, but with a beat. My favourite rappers, like Watsky, Hop Sun, and Harry Baker were all slam poets, and a lot of good rap music is about the message and deep words and not vapid lyrics and trashy guitar solos.

However, having said that, I understand why you don't like it, because not all music has to be for everyone.
