Hello, /mu. Just wondering about your thoughts on video game music. In my opinion a lot of video games have some really great soundtracks and are worth mentioning.

Is video game music good and worth listening to? And which video games have among the best? pic related

I listen to VGM but do not play any games other than those hentai visual novels.

I would say the old Diablo 2 and Starcraft 1 ost is GOAT
>>
I listen to vidya soundtracks all the time. The first Silent Hill OST is one of my favorites. When it's foggy and rainy outside I'll listen to it

Many people have this really dogmatic opposition to VGM.

>We're talking about video game music, though. It's background music. Stuff that's designed to be drowned out by the sound effects of what you're actually doing.
>Anyone who's ever listened to any sound track on its own, ever, knows that it's incredibly boring stuff without whatever it's supposed to go with. Video game music is actually worse. Movie music will have dynamics and multiple themes and cues that makes no sense without the movie it's scored to. Video game music can't even do that, so you just get a long bland song that's designed to be behind something else.
>So, yes, it is diluting culture away from actual art and actual music.

>Dumbing down culture
>It's sad. People expect the video game, social media, mobile app experience from everything. It's like fast food.
I've also seen people on 4chan many times just totally dismiss VGM because of whatever pre-conceptions they've invented in their heads. Many people have the same attitude towards anime music.

They seem to think VGM is like this:

When it's more like this:

And even classic 8-bit VGM is very well composed, not just some primitive bleeps and bloops:

Looks like there's quite of lot of good video game music I have not been exposed to. I'm happy to see it isn't just totally dismissed by many people. I for one have always loved the legend of Zelda soundtracks.

Videogame music is pretty great and was my doorway to figuring out a lot of my preferences when I was a kid

It's kind of depressing when you find someone who exclusively listens to it though

Silent Hill OST's are god tier. Well, when they're done by Yamaoka anyways. Also, everyone loves save room music in Resident Evil.

Dustforce and SH2 and DKC

But video game music, and soundtracks in general, are not made to be actively listened to. They are made to enhance another piece of media. This doesn't mean you can't listen to them outside of their intended context, but they don't have any meaning on their own. The fact that so many people listen almost exclusively to soundtracks just proves that people are more likely to stay in their comfort zone rather than exploring new music and challenging themselves.

Wow that 8-Bit is music from the ninja game is some of the best I've heard. I can imagine that being transferred into song played with traditional instruments or a cleaner non 8-bit sound. As it is that's some pretty cool stuff.

What if I listen to a soundtrack without ever playing the game?
>>
>>64748149
I don't agree with this. Just because the music was designed to compliment a game doesn't mean it can't stand on it's own. I challenge you to explore some of the best VGM and see if it can't have meaning behind it. After all, music can have whatever meaning we choose to put behind it. Classical music is often used to compliment a dinner or something of the sort, but it stands on it's own and has meaning to boot.

It doesn't matter that they weren't made to be listened to on their own. People still listen to them on their own, often even without having played the games they're from (I have never played Bravely Default). The music works standalone regardless of what purpose it was made for.

>The fact that so many people listen almost exclusively to soundtracks just proves that people are more likely to stay in their comfort zone rather than exploring new music and challenging themselves.
How's that different from listening to nothing but what's on the radio, or only listening to one genre of music like metal? There's more variety in game music than there is in a single genre anyway.

Although I prefer the NES over the C64, Last Ninja 2 is probably my favorite 8-bit OST.

Music is music, you clearly have a linear way of thinking.
