Popular music refers to the term "popular culture" as defined in anthropology, as in something that is mass distributed and easily consumed from some sort of modern day luxury a la TV, radio, the internet, etc. Unlike "art music" (I hate that term), it is typically created in the mind of an artist and played without writing it, and the complexity varies, while "art music" has a greater focus on how the music looks on paper as opposed to how it actually sounds. Folk music is passed on by oral tradition similar to how folk religious are passed down, but that is changing, as we now have technology that makes the oral tradition irrelevant when we can have recordings that let folk cultures still hear the culture of their ancestors as it was made generations later. So, I was saying that by technical definition, even the most obscure harsh noise is technically popular music.
As for those artists being popular, I never said it was a bad thing. I just said they were relatively well known in comparison to most underground artists. I like Swans and TG. I can't really speak for Mr. Bungle, though.
