Do you get this pissy when somebody brings up any other theory? Like the string theory.

TV told me there were nine.
And I know TV scientists are right because there's a lot of cheesy CG animations going on when they talk.

by definition a theory is something that can be observed or tested to an extent, otherwise it's just a hypothesis

I mean, probably like four significantly different lineups all playing similarish music.
what the fuck even is music theory? the last guy who preached about music theory to me was valiantly defending hans zimmer so...
>>64721675
oh, that's it?
I know a small amount of music theory and play saxophone, since someone will probably ask
music theory seems nice for helping to guide the writing process but it seems like a bunch of people end up stumbling onto better music with no knowledge than the shit people who love music theory end up with. Whether or not you know music theory is besides the point as to whether your musics any good. I know film theory but that doesn't mean I can make a better movie than some kid who has weird innate talent, which is what most good musicians have
Are there people seriously against music theory?
Like you are choosing to stay ignorant to something and pretend it doesn't exist just because you dont like it
you have to know the rules to break them. anyone saying otherwise is probably an experimental/ambient soundcloud producer
>>64721541
reminder that the Beatles, Chuck Berry, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, RZA (didn't know music theory until recently and his music has suffered because of it), John Frusciante, countless Punk musicians, Bob Marley, and many more didn't know a lick of "music theory"
>>64724374
wow nice gif buddy

I'm pretty sure they did know theory, some of the artists you named used basic power chords and common chord progressions. I'm not really trying to say that you need theory to make good or creative music but it's quite helpful contrary to popular belief.
I'm sure its interesting and good to know just not a whole lotta real world value to it
>>64724591
They didn't. I guess if you have a vague definition of "music theory" you could say they all knew it, but it was intuitive. I'm saying they didn't learn the relationships between chords and rhythms by reading, they just created. When John Lennon wrote I'm only sleeping, he was saying "And for the next chord I'll go to the IV" or something, it was just him writing. If you want to say that using common musical devices is theory, that's fine, but I'm saying they weren't "students" of music, studying theory at a college or something.
I think knowing theory can help some, can hinder others. Most people don't like breaking rules, so learning theory limits them. Those who can and do are sometimes better off with theory. I know vaguely about theory and I love the way my songs come out, because it's just me playing a guitar and not worrying about anything but expression. I feel like if I knew less I'd be even better off sometimes.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
~Isaac Asimov~

bonus point for a bad pentatonic lick.
>>64724760
Music is in a completely different class of knowledge, though. It's not important to learn and know about. Asimov's quote can be applied to most things, but music is not one of them. History has proven, as shown by my examples, that ignorance to music theory isn't necessarily a bad thing. Paul McCartney and John Lennon are two of the most gifted pop songwriters our world has seen, and they didn't know music theory like that.
If you wish to be a classical composer, or be able to notate the music you write, it is necessary for you to learn theory. If not, it's not really that important. People who know theory are not inherently "better at making music" than those who don't. Most music theory students tend to be lacking creatively.
>>64724434
There is only music theory. All music is my personal torture device. I am satan. Bye.
Hey atheists
Music theory is still a theory you dumb assholes
Honestly I'm not surprised. There are many musically illiterate people on /mu anyway, and this cuck is one of them.
