What I'm saying is that it takes a lot more time to appreciate all the subtleties morvid angel was going for than burzum coupled with their bizzare sense of harmony and rhythm you don't fully get it on your first time through like you get burzum or darkthrone, there is more than 1 level in death metal, from the first listen it seems like more brutal riff based metal with some oddly paced stops, with each listen you get more pieces of the puzzle

Who /going to metal shows alone/?
Might go see Elder this week. Will buy some merchandise too if available.
>>
>>64714854
I do.
Sometimes I meet people at the train station and walk around the event with them, or at the campsite meeting people, or even at the merch stand or anywhere on the venue.
Sometimes I enjoy going there alone, not talking to anyone and just shamelessly going first row headbanging with no shame too (I'm too autistic to do this when I am there with someone)

What does /metal/ think of this album?
>>
>>64714878
Katatonia went to shit after BMD sorry
>>
>>64714846
that's like saying that prog is more difficult "to get" (whatever that means) than harsh noise, while in fact every prog band has more fans than Merbow or Masonna
>>
>>64714878
Good album
>>
>>64714886
You can't get harsh noise, it's literally garbage being sold to you as music, the genre literally only exists to pander to hipsters and aesthetic faggots
>>
>>64714900
ok I think we can stop here
>>
>>64714886
Nah, not at all, death metal is far more subtle and mysterious, atleast the old school deatb is(not saying that new dm bands suck, but to appreciate new dm bands you have to have a direct understanding of all the intricacies going on in old school dm), you didn't mention you like thrash in your post so maybe that's the problem, anyway listen to frantic disembowelment until you get it
>>

>>
>>64714799
So do you ever listen to anything that has riffs? I'm probably falling for dank ass b8 right here though
>>
>>64714900
true.
Power noise at least has rhythm and you can almost dance to it, and blackened noise has atmosphere. Harsh noise is literally just pretentious bullshit. I attended a lecture where a philosophy teacher read his thesis about morals and noise music, and all he did was tell us that noise is a-ok because the Italian futurists tried making some, and that Descartes said that music gets boring after a while.
So all it has going for it is literally just novelty appeal and a vague historical genealogy to brag about.
He also wrongfully claimed that the harsh noise scene is apolitical, and the few other hipster students like myself who attended it exchanged confused glances as we simultaneously understood that he didn't even know his shit.

Related, I've been listening to it for 6 years and it feels like my understanding of it is going only deeper and deeper, shit is weird as fuck, I tried looking at it from different perspectives because I thought I was biased or something but no, it doesn't add up, all the early dm acts like morbid angel, pestilence, death's human album, demilich, adramelech, cryptopsy etc.. Noise (harsh noise in particular) is really personal stuff when it comes to what you think is "good" or "bad". The lack of formalism and structure means that you're, in a way, compelled to absorb everything at face value. So, basically, subjectivity of appreciation is stressed further; only you can judge what you like.

This doesn't mean all noise is structureless, mind-you. One of the interesting things about noise music is that learning about how the sounds were made, the techniques used, and the general thought and process behind the composition are all things to consider, even more-so than in popular music.

>>64718919
Gore Obsessed is my favorite by them tbqh

I haven't listened to their newest and I've heard a lot of people say it's their best so that could change.

How come the entirely of /mu/ outside of this general hates all music with a technical aspect to it?
>>
>>64718906
they know what works and they keep doing that with little change, the people love it so they keep doing it
>>
>>64719012
Because /mu/ is full of faggots
>>
>>64719014
This.

I don't care that ever album sounds the same when it's always just fucking awesome.
>>
>>64719012
untrained/inexperienced ears, mainly why they even have the tolerance for indie garbage
>>
>>64719012
Makes them feel inadequate about their own musical abilities

It doesn't sound artsy enough so they can't brag to their friends about how patrician they are
>>
>>64719012
I like some /mu/core.. i liked ITAOTS for a while and i like the latest animal collective album. i grew up with the beatles
>>
>>64719012
because most of /mu/ knows nothing about music and is unable to discuss aside from "feels" and memes
>>
Is there anyone else here who pretty much listens to rock/metal exclusively?

I've made multiple attempts at getting into hip-hop, electronic, jazz, etc. but I've been very hard pressed to find anything that genuinely excited me, with a couple of exceptions I guess.
>>
>>64719012
/mu/ listens to plenty of music with a technical aspect. However, they prioritize music that is inaccessible and different from popular music. Then proceed to consider that good, simply based on this. While there often are pop hints all over the music. It's my only explanation.
>>
>>64719075
same, have like 3-5 favourite artists in almost every-genre, but not able to expand in it at all

>>64719075
Well, I've listened to metal/rock/punk from early age, I listened to some hip hop in an attempt to fit in when I was 14, but it didn't work, listened to some rap that made fun of other rappers, german stuff like K.I.Z.
then pretty much metal for a while until i was 17 when i listened to hip hop for about four months but it never managed to grasp me long term
>>
>>64719083
do you mean classical and jazz or did something else fly over my radar? noise rock isn't technical at all
>>
>>64719113
/mu/ likes a lot of math rock I guess.
>>
>>64719124
but all the math rock albums they like are complete shit, stuff like american football
>>
>>64719083
/mu/ seems to have a hankering for auditory novelty rather than quality of songwriting overall
>>
>>64719075
Nah. My most listened to genres of late are metal, hip hop, and pop punk, though.
I definitely understand having a favorite genre, but I don't get people that just listen to one kind of music. I'm like one of those fags that lists "I listen to everything" on social media profiles, except I don't exclude "rap and country." You just have to find that jumping off point in each genre.
>>
>>64719124
Some math rock is legitimately good, I enjoy stuff like Father Figure

I used to be like this with industrial and metal. It'll come over time. Such a change has to start from within what you're already listening to. Chances are that if you are very selective in your metal, you won't easily expand. I used to exclusively be into black, death, thrash, folk and industrial metal. Then I slowly got into almost all other metal genres, even glam. From there, I found artists who fused metal and other styles. Slowly I got interested in other musical styles used in metal and now I pretty much enjoy stuff from most styles of rock and a bunch of electronic subgenres too. Heck, I even find myself listening to EDM right after gritty black metal sessions. Guess I've stopped giving a shit. That's how it went for me, though. Maybe you'll find stuff which resembles what you like, but isn't metal, and slowly step outside your comfort zone that way.
>>64719113
Classical and jazz would be the main genres, yeah.
>>64719141
I feel the same way. Songwriting is king for me and it's often sacrificed for novelty. Fuck that, give me the middle road.

The new design decisions are horrible. But it still works for what I used it for; cataloging my listening habits and finding stuff about artists or looking for new ones.

>>64719569
I used to love it, but they've been trying their goddamn hardest to kill it.
The old radio was awesome, and they dropped it in favor of Spotify (which is one of the better big name radio options honestly, but still not as good as the old radio), and the new site layout is just terrible, and has been in beta for at least a full year now with no changes that I've noticed.
>>
>>64719075
I mostly like Instrumental Hip-Hop, since once the MCs start throwing around the N-word, it just gets too weird for me.

As for Electronic music, I'm a bit into Breakcore and DnB. Atari Teenage Riot was really helpful for me as a punk fan. It's a real shame Digital Hardcore never got more popular imo.

While in the year of our lord 2016 the most talked black metal releases are Oranssi Pazuzu (a band which stopped being interesting in 2009) Moonsorrow (which I've never even considered black metal, and that folky shit makes me cringe 90% of the time) and Abbath's solo debut (while Immortal haven't been good/relevant for more than ten years)
