Does someone here have experience with resonator basses? Any recommendations?
>>
>>64672479
Not with basses but with the guitars I find you want to get the models that are made entirely of metal to get that really unique resonator sound, otherwise they sound too close to a regular acoustic imo.

I imagine it's the same for basses
>>
>>64672601
I really just need it for the volume, acoustic basses sound terrible and barely get loud enough to be audible besides a normal guitar, and I really don't want to carry my upright with my for a camping trip.

>>
Anyone know if the Ibanez Weathered Black finish is satin or oil?
>>
>>64672657
It'll probably be a bit louder than an acoustic bass, I wouldn't expect too much though.

Les Claypool seems to like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE5GuBSstw0
>>
>>64672926
Interesting, it's just a pain because no store really has a large variety of resonator basses to test and compare. I'm just hoping it's loud enough inbetween some basic percussion and 1 or 2 guitars.
>>
>>64672657
An upright player on /gg/? I really want to learn playing upright bass, but I live in a small apartment. Are EUBs worth it? I heard they sound bad when played with a bow, is that true? What should I look for, what model/brand is good?
>>
>>64674537
not that guy but they sound fine when played with a bow so long as you dont get a total shit one. expect to at least get an NS designs one or something starting at like 1500usd.
>>
>>64674641
And I assume I can use my normal bass amp and cab with it?
So something like the NS design NXT + a bow would be sufficient? Do those come set up properly/can I do that myself?

this i my 8 string agile, i just got it a week ago but im starting to get used to it now. now when i pickup my six string, it feels like a ukulele. i mainly play metal and clean stuff, my biggest influences are jean baudin, meshuggah, and animals as leaders.
>>
>>64674778
yea you can use a normal bass amp. they are easier to setup than an acoustic upright cuz the bridge isn't floating and all that. if you can do basic guitar/bass setup youll be fine

Being able to read rhythms is the most important and most difficult aspect of reading music imo. So if you can do that you're like 65% of the way there. The best way to learn note names is to use mnemonic devices like FACE or Every Good Boy Does Fine for reading treble clef. Pretty much every musician that can sight read starts there. Then get a hold of any sheet music you can and just write the note names under each beat.
>>
>>64675372
typical i know, but i do enjoy it.
>>
>>64675281
no, i got a 5 as a first electric upright. its fine, you just have to arch more to bow but if youre learning that as it is, its not a big deal. as for a bow, french or German is your choice but dont get some plastic garbage. very minimum get something thats at least 100bucks or it will just fall apart on you. also go for a medium to darker rosin as it has more grip for the heavy bass strings

>>

Muting is not more problematic with a 5-string upright? Interesting. German bow is mandatory or my teacher would refuse to teach me, so that's settled. Then I'll look for a decent bow. Thanks!

i dunno, i came from a 4 string acoustic upright. i didnt find it an issue.

The best, most tried-and-true method that everyone from 14-year-old me to Steve Vai has used to build hand synchronization is the 1-2-3-4 exercise. Basically just play the first, second, third, and fourth frets on the 6th string (or low E string) with your index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers respectively, then jump to the A string and play the same four frets with the same four fingers, then the same on the D string, etc. When you get to the high E string, shift everything up a fret and play in pinky, ring, middle, index on each string. Then just repeat up the neck. Here's a quick tab to get you started. Once you get comfortable with the basic mechanics, play along with a metronome and slowly increase the speed, and look up variations of it online. I think Vai's 10-Hour Workout runs through a few different fingerings for the exercise.
>>
>>64676041
American Specials are very nice instruments but I've played plenty in store that sounded and played like absolute crap. Some were amazing to play.

I had an American Special Honey burst nitro satin Precision bass that I stupidly sold. Regret it all the time.
>>
>>64676265
Scale exercises. It's boring, but it builds up dexterity quickly. Use the major scale in different positions on the neck and practice these:
-play the scale up and down normally
-do three note sequences
-four note sequences
-interval sequences (3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths)

Practice with a metronome starting slow. Make sure your left hand finger movements are fluid and not moving too much. It's really important to only use as much movement in your hand as needed - for example don't lift your fingers way off the fretboard, it kills speed.
>>
>>64677325
>>64676137
>>64676041

Also remember that American Special instruments use Grasebucket wired tone pots. So when you roll the tone off, you literally only cut highs. Lows and low mids aren't boosted.

Like what? I was planning to remove all on the body, painters tape all around the neck, then strip the paint (it's an Epi so I'll probably just heat gun and scrape since it's probably polyurethane) apply primer, then paint, wet sand, then apply clear laquer to shine.
>>
>>64677334

Isn't it what a tone pot is supposed to do? Act as a high pass filter?
>>
>>64677334
from an electronic standpoint, a passive RC filter is only capable of cutting frequencies outside a certain range. You would need active components (an on-board preamp) to boost anything.

The way it's usually wired, a tone pot is a low-pass filter.
>>
>>64677521
The way 99% of Fenders are wired, when you roll off the tone pot, highs get cut but low mids get boosted at the same time.
>>
>>64677487
Just careful masking really since your also dealing with binding iirc. You can use the poly finish as the primer coat, even with a nitro color coat. Just scuff it up with 400 grit.Do not take a heat gun to it. You will definitely fuck it up.
>>
can someone id this guitar? I think its an eko kiwi
>>
>>64677612
You are wrong, look up the difference between stock and Greasbucket wiring.
>>
>>64677649
>>64677612

Also, boost is the wrong word I guess. It lets the low mids come out. Check out the TBX circuit, I've got one on one of my axes. You'd swear it was active if you didn't know.

A Greasebucket circuit is a passive band-pass filter, which is to say that it rolls off the lows and highs at the same time.

Sounds like the greasebucket tone circuits is exactly what I want.
>>
>>64674915
Interesting to see how you adjust to a new instrument eh? That being said, 8 strings are more or less useless unless you're -actually- utilizing wide chord voicing support with really good pickups to pick it up.

Otherwise, I'd just stick with a downtuned 7 strings or a baritone 6.

>>

But I also just got an electric guitar recently.

>>64679171
Because he didn't ask specifically for a chromatic scale exercise? I mean, I don't really care what people practice, this is just one of the earliest exercises for building speed and hand synchronization I ever learned and it seems like a lot of guitarists use it.

Also it is technically a chromatic scale you're working through, so...
>>
>>64679338
i mean it's missing a note but idk why that guy is saying that. the exercise is just about dexterity

If you expand the concept across the fretboard then it becomes a chromatic scale no matter what.
>>

>>
>>64680037

IF the bass amp is the right wattage and the bass cab has the right wattage handling and same impedance; 4,8,16 ohms then yes you can play guitar thru the bass amp.

>>64680120
Fucking idiots. A bass amp doesn't care if you plug in a guitar. The EQ obviously won't work properly and some bass amp designs aren't suited for guitar, but it can't damage anything. Guitar speakers do have issues if you play bass on them, but he's planning on playing guitar, so it's not a problem either. The only issue would be overpowering the speaker cabinet, but you can do the same with a high wattage guitar amp. And as always, just don't be stupid and you won't blow any speakers by volume.

Yes, it'll work and it's safe (in general, as always check impedance and power ratings and don't be stupid)

No thanks. I have a weird twisted left wrist and the strap button placements on these gets my left hand/arm sore pretty quickly. Right behind the neck joint is absolutely perfect for me, it's the most comfortable guitar I've played yet.

Hi everyone

I'm looking for some coolmways to use my DD-500 delay/loop station

I've been improvising over open chord arpeggios (All I can think of ATM, I am unskilled) and getting some nice sounds (been looping progressions and shit)

I love post rock and shoegaze, how would I go about writing post rock shit? Kinda clueless on how to start

If some of an you remember, here's my gear

No, that's simply called a rake and it sounds great. You can do the same thing sweeping from high to low. Your statement comes off like, "The worst thing you can do on a guitar is slide into a note." Or, "The worst thing you can do on a guitar is bend a note up a whole-step."

More. Adding low mids or high mids will give a different tone between them but that's where all the articulation is. Adding too much high can make your sound too shrill.
If you're using distortion, turn down the gain a little bit.

Nice. I bought pic related from some guy in vegas for $300 (google says they go for around 1k).

It was in perfect condition other than having a bunch of Cadillac shit glued/nailed onto it. The guy loved Cadillacs so much that he bought a really nice Lincoln, removed anything that said Lincoln or had their insignia, and replaced it with Cadillac stuff.

Just took a knife and a screwdriver to it and it's back to perfect condition except a couple screw holes

Count on having to put money into paying a tech to replace cabs and stuff.

I'd just buy a Deluxe Reverb, or an older Peavey Classic 30. Use the money you saved to buy an old fender champ. Vintage, cheap, and if it needs work you have a great amp already.

lmfao

Get a good amp, dude. I can't believe you've gone a decade on that little piece of shit. When I first started playing (also about a decade ago), I played guitar through a multi-fx pedal and out through some shitty monitor speakers. I joined a band and since carrying around speakers and a multi-fx looked retarded, I used the drummer's old shitty spider amp.

One day, we kicked the drummer out of the band because he sucked and I was left without an amp. Got a new drummer and he had a cool big amp (I forget what it was, but it was a huge improvement over a spider) and my playing sounded 10x better just playing simple things on it. Soon after that, I went out and bought a nice tube amp and have never been happier with any other gear purchase.

I will never go back to a shitty amp like a spider. You'd have to be spectacularly bad to sound worse on a better amp. Get rid of that piece of shit, you wont regret it
>>
>>64690948
You only own a stray currently?

If you got one you're happy with then I'd say go with something with humbuckers.

You'll have a plenty versatile sound with both.

>>
>>64690675
>I just don't want to buy new shit and realize my playing sucks and not my equipment
That's not what will make you a good player.
Everyone sucks, the difference between good and bad players is that the good player knows he sucks, and works on sucking less.
Get an actual amp, get something to record yourself, and get to dealing with the harsh reality or you're never going to get any better.
>>
>tfw the guitar solo on identikit sounds like a tele played through a practice amp
>>
>>64691598
Well I definitely feel like I suck. I'm very frustrated with my sound at the moment and I feel like I'd at least be more satisfied with my playing if I had some better equipment. My set up right now has virtually no sustain, so I have to bend the strings like a lunatic just to keep the note going on the amp. Good advice though bro
>>
>>64691072
>my taste is objectively better than yours

>>
>>64691748
Don't fall for the "more sustain is better", anything past the 500$ range will have enough sustain for everything.
I do completely understand what you're talking about, it's easy to play when you're not worrying about the fact your gear sounds like ass.
As for buying a new guitar, definitely go for the HSS/HSH, you'll get almost every traditional kind of sound. Or just go in a shop and try everything, and then buy the guitar you liked the most.
>>
>>64691991

Just want to point out, some players, quite a small number of them, have issues with the middle pickup because it kinds of get in the way of their picking/finger-picking.

Really weird, but some guy told me that. I remembered playing the Jazzmaster and it's big ass pickup kind of got in my way during finger-picking.
>>
>>64689010
Are those 490t pickups?
>>
>>64691991
Oh I know sustain is just a tool, not something to be used as a crutch. It's just that tool really isn't in my repertoire because my amp and guitar are hunks of shit
>>
>>64692263
Well it's really specific, my guitar's HSH and I never had that problem.
Same for pickguards, I never hit my guitar's body when strumming.
But do try it out, some stuff flat out doesn't work with some people, for instance I hate jackson RRs even when sitting them in the classical position.
>>
>>64692408
I'm not even speaking about technique, Gibson keeps boasting about sustain, but it doesn't really matter for playing, and you can give a guitar a lot more sustain with the right compression.

>>
>>64692620
Sustain's just part of the attack/sustain/decay/release, but is just used to describe everything but attack in a guitar's sound. If you just take care of sustain but leave out everything, you're not necessarily going to have a good sound, your attack could be too agressive, or your EQ wrong.
As I said, you can give your guitar more sustain than it has by using a compressor. I think there's an anon in here that uses one with his blue jazzmaster. The only little problem you get with compressors is that mistakes may be more obvious, just like with distortion.
>>
>>64692849

Am I really asking for too much? The bass is in perfect condition no scratches and the electronics are fine. Am I getting lowballed? What can I expect to get for this?

>>
>>64693038
Because the way compressors act is that they'll make the quieter parts in your playing "louder". Noise isn't part of your playing but still in your signal, so if you don't get rid of it. Shielding your cavities and having waxed pots can minimize that.
