The thing about the internet is that if it happened earlier, the music would probably be different. I won't engage in a brain exercise of imagining how it would be like, but definitely the record industry would take a huge hit and record sales plunge just like they did since 2000s.
/mu/ was introduced in 2004. The subj of the thread came out in 1991. 2004 was so-so for music, but 2007-2008 saw a huge decline of CD. If the music business was in its 2016 state, it would be even harsher.
