These days I listen to as much non-metal as metal though. I think it helps that metal fans already have many databases/sources for finding new music, compared to most other genres, which makes it easier to dive deep. Before I started using RYM, I would just rely on Wikipedia to discover new music.

Yeah, this is gonna sound dumb, but the thing about post-Demigod Behemoth is that they don't just have good songs that get you going, they have ANTHEMS.
That's not to say their mid-era doesn't have some too (Chant for Eschaton 2000 is absolutely fucking amazing) but they're rare, and usually not on the level of stuff like Ov Fire and the Void.

can you even make at least one logical point? who in their right mind would think melodeath is a good starting point? you get into subgenres from the ground-up to build an understanding of the sound, and even then, most melodeath is so far distanced from other death metal genres in sound that jumping from melodeath to say OSDM, tech death, brutal death, death-doom is really jarring, because most of the time melodeath shares a lot more in common with power metal and progressive metal than it does death metal, and is generally a lot more accessible, clean, with poppy choruses and catchy hooks. it's not a good entry-point for death metal because it's so far distanced from death metal in the first place. you're meant to get into a genre and then branch out to its subgenres, not the other way around.
