I'm going to buy a classical guitar after I graduate because it's been awhile since I'm giving my friends guitar back that he lent me for the last year. I've read numerous people on /gg/ saying it's detrimental to the playing to have it be a cutaway and electric, while my luthier cousin says the only difference would be very minuscule and wouldn't affect the playability.

So, my question, any recommendations with specific reasons to get either a non-electric non-cutaway, or the one I wanted to get?

>>
>>64646619
I answered a couple of threads ago, but I'll copypasta it again for you

Unless you're only playing classical guitar repertoire acoustically and need maximum projection, there is no reason to not get a cutaway classical with a pickup.

It's only the hardest of hardcore classical fags that worry about the nth degree of tonal purity as many classical guitarists amplify these days as standard practice, although usually miced rather a pickup.

The ability to plug in to an amp expands the possible uses for the instrument enormously.

Audition instruments till you find one that sounds good plugged and unplugged and feels good in your hands.

Condenser mics sound much better than piezo pickups or inbody mics, the active preamp just sterilizes the sound so badly in classical guitars. At best it makes a decent blend, at worst it sounds honky as though you trapped a goose being microwaved in your guitar.

I'm anal about cutaway guitars, really the upper bout is not apart of the vibrating membrane so it's not much of a sounds loss, they do however have to brace the guitar differently.
The upper frets, which are used often in classical repetoire, are easily accessible.
Despite this I hate them, I hate the way they look and feel.

One last note, when classical guitar luthiers build a top and back, they tune it close to(not on) a specific fundamental note.
Classical guitar tops are often tuned around A for the thicker tops all the way down to F# for the thinnest. While the backs are tuned much higher.

I can't imagine cut away guitars recieve the same level of fine tuning as many luthiers don't offer the option to even build a guitars with a cutaway and you can bet Factory guitars don't have that much time spent on them.
>>
>>64634563
Started with an acoustic and my dad tried to teach me some our country's folk songs, wasn't interested at age 7.
At age 14, Guitar Hero and Rock Band were pretty big at the time and everybody was playing guitar, so I bought a cheap chink strat clone, but lost interest pretty fast.
At 19 a friend of mine wanted to start a band and needed a bassist, so took my brother's bass I've playing since.

Currently 22 and I'm about to take some Funk/Slap lessons this summer.

d'addario 10s

9s are too slinky and i don't like how they sound. 11s are a bit too thick and make bends more difficult than they need to be, but they sound good. 10s are good balance between how they sound/how they bend.

for acoustic i don't know what i use, i randomly go from extra light to mediums.

D'Addario. Always.

11-56 in Drop C on a 25.5"
11-56 in Drop A# in another 25.5" guitar (because trem + old warped neck)
12-54 D Standard in a specific 24.75" guitar.
11-52 Eb Standard in another 24.75" Or 10.5-48 in E Standard

I just need that little more tension.

your technique is fine but you're relying on it too much. there were a few spots where i hear you come up with some type of melodic idea and i wanted you to expand on it, but you'd abandon it and start shredding instead

don't take this the wrong way, you're good, just lay it back
>>
>>64647041

>>
>>64648030
It's good enough to hang with just about any rock band you want. You've got enough chops to get most any gig that would come your way.

To improve what you've already got you need to spend time getting outside of your comfort zone. I can tell that you're very comfortable playing over that track, but branch out. Listen to a lot of different music, and develop your ear further. You played it safe the whole way through and that's not a bad thing. You did what would get you paid. There's a lot of room for experimentation in that track though.

>>64649001
yea you really want to get out of the whole "finger playing" thing, it's a musical death sentence. that's how people end up in malmsteen territory.

it's kind of natural to end up playing with your fingers rather than your ears, i'm pretty sure it happens to everyone who heavily practices scales/arpeggios.

maybe try incorporating more slides and bends rather than shreddy scale stuff. try practicing over a backing track and try to physically stop yourself from shredding and instead do slides/bends

I have a high question.
Is it actually physically possible to play so hard and so fast that your fingers just cannot physically take it and you start injuring yourself? I mean, actually playing, hitting notes.
I keep trying to do this really really fast sliding thing on the last 3 strings and I'm paranoid it's gonna cut me. It's already visually doing a number on my calluses. Is this a known problem?

It's pretty nice, good chops as well, but I felt like it doesn't have any patterns or structure of thought, you know what I mean? I know it's improvised, but it sounds too random to me, it's great just missing that imo.
I really loved some of the exotic and symmetrical scales you tastefully used in some places.
>>
>>64645621
Look at the logo on the tremolo plate.
>>
>>64653615
If you would ever want my advice on how to improve on that thing I mentioned, here it is:
Try to think of a story. Maybe something that happened to you, maybe something made up on the spot, maybe some event in your head, or a person (try to capture their essence). Use your mind's ears to create those melodies and then play them on the fretboard. Transfer them from your head into the music. The chops you have, that's where you can best use them. Don't think of scales or arpeggios or whatever, in fact use all of the 12 notes on your fretboard. some chromatics sound awesome as passing notes, some sound great played for an instand and then slided into the "correct" note, some are great to use to bend into the "correct" note, they give it character.
Also, as guitarists, we have the advantage of having the whole range of notes, not just the 12 on the piano. for example in the key of Am you can very slightly bend the C to somewhere between C and C# and it's an awesome bluesy sound if used correctly. Just make sure that after you bend you don't slowly release but jump to another note instead (A sounds great)
>>
>>64653711

I can make up pretty nice sounding licks and phrases in my head, in fact I think many people can.

The problem is translating them directly into the fretboard, and seeing the bigger picture of the melody you are playing. My fretboard knowledge isn't good enough. I still don't know where all the notes are.
>>
>>64653767
Sure you can.

Me personally I come up with incredible fiction stories, I just can't seem to get the letters of the alphabet to arrange like I want when I sit down and try to type.

The best way to develop this skill is to transcribe and learn stuff by ear. It helps tremendously and it will make you a better musician. Don't just make out guitars, but also saxophone, trumpet, bass, vocal melodies, violins, whatever you hear and you like.

Now, I don't claim expertise. As you heard in the clips ( >>64651468 )
, I have a long ass motherfucking way to go yet. But since I recorded those, I started transcribing more and I can vouch for it, it helps with everything.

It's not.
The fundamental note they tune it to determines how thick or thin the soundboard is which means greater volume. It also changes the harmonic series and overtones.

What's the best way to get my open string to stop vibrating when i'm playing?

I got 3 guitars dude, and they are all different from each other. I still want a tele and an ES335. What I'm saying is with a custom guitar of that quality, you'll get exactly what you want, and it will last unless you abuse it.
But if you get a great HH or HSH guitar, or if you're a strat person, an SSS guitar, then you'll never need another (insert pickup configuration) guitar again because what you have will be better and more customised for you than anything else ever.
And yeah, I do know exactly what I want from a guitar. I've been playing for 10 years though, and I did actually make some wrong guitar choices when I was younger.
Thanks for the shitposting and sorry you're sad.

Alot of people look for vintage guitars and amps, sometimes it seems to me that vintage guitars and amps are seen as more desirable than brand new ones, actually.

Do you feel like a part of it is because many people try to recreate the sounds of the past rather than actually trying something that is entirely new?

How long Stratocaster, Les Paul and Telecaster will remain the most popular guitar models??
>>
>>64657616
Yes, especially guitarists are die hard traditionalists. See people who genuinely think point to point wiring somehow makes their amp better than if it was using a PCB, active electronics on a guitar are the devil and in general anything we didn't have in the 50s is not necessary or desirable because "the legends didn't need it back then either".

>>
>>64657616
I own one modern guitar, one modernized version of a les paul, and a strat.
There's a reason for some guitars still being at the top. Every shit guitar that was ever built is forgotten, these are the cream of the crop, the ones that stood the test of time again and again. They got it right. There are modern guitars that are shit, and there are modern guitars that feel and sound better than sex, like some suhr, strandberg, schecter, esp etc.

Is there some sort of "tone guide" out there that would perhaps give some idea on the setups needed to achieve specific tones? Say, for example, how to get something as deliciously thick as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm8yEN8BU4A

And is the Fuzz Factory worth the price? I'm a yurofag, and buying one of those fuckers from the US, along with shipping and taxes, would cost me more than my guitar. I love the shit you can achieve with them (well, at least what I saw on youtube), but the price is kinda turning me away.

What is a solid state amp that has very clean cleans and is suitable for effects like the Jc-120, but is not a JC?

Orange Crush Series if you're ok with a combo amp. Look up some youtube reviews, the clean channel is amazing. They go up to 120w but then you could just as well buy a JC-120. The 60w or 35w combos could be what you're looking for, though. I own the 20rt, great amp, great cleans.
>>
>>64659259
you have three options:

1. Play until your fingers get numb/calloused and dont feel it anymore

2. Play until your fingers fall off and you have build a robotic metal hand to play.

or

3. Use a pick.

option 3 will make you look like a sissy to /gg/ but i dont give a shit because I haven't touched a bass.

Which brings up an interesting question: Does anyone use finger picks for bass for tonal reasons?
>>
>>64659359
>I want a solid state and not tube also because tube requires more maintenance and is less durable, and also more expensive.
Bullshit, you need to play at high volume for a lot of time before your power amp tubes go bad.
"cleaner cleans" depends only on how the amp is built, the twin reverb is tubes and it's clean as hell.

Must be why most "guitar legends" have fucktons of pedals and processors hooked up to their instruments.

I'd pay good money to see something like that.

I've seen that once. A bassist playing with fingerpicks. It was nice but I wouldn't do it. You'd need to play retardedly softly for it not to sound like total shit.

why did Marshall stop making these
they were like 300 bucks, they sold out instantly everywhere, they sounded awesome

PS- they are loud as fuck too

even 5 watt tube amps with no master are fucking loud

an 18 watt marshall is not that much quieter than a 50w marshall

watts to decibles is logarithmic

if you live in a apartment or right next to someone, get a modeler or practice amp that sounds good that you can plug headphones into

So, are these guys even aware of the existence of /gg/?
>>
Lads I'm learning and I feel like it's impossible to get my chord changes upto speed in songs. They are always half a second late and sloppy, it's so discouraging.
>>
>>64663599
it was linked to /gg/ right after it was made, so I'm confident that they're aware, yes.

I have a wah and a tubescreamer. What should my next pedal be?
