I really wanted to like these guys, but on a lot of their albums they try way too hard to sound whimsical or edgy (especially on Hurry Up). Their only album I can really get through is Dead Cities.
Saturdays=Youth might be a good album for you. It's not whimsical, and it's really different from all their other albums because it's way more Shoegaze and less ambient/80s

M83 are damn near the complete opposite of edgy. Anthony makes orchestral film soundtracks and recently cheesy 80s pop.
If you like Dead Cities listen to Before the Dawn Heals Us, it has a very similar sound.

They're going for a whimsical aesthetic. Being whimsical is all about spontaneity and when the music is as squeaky-clean as this is, it's hard to not think that they're trying too hard.

Most their albums suffer the same fate. Two maybe 3 good songs and the rest is shit. They should just make EPs for like 10 years and then make an album out of those to get something actually good.

Junk is the correct title for his recent album, it is complete garbage. His earlier stuff is so much better, what a disappointment.
Hurry Up, Saturdays=Youth, and Dead Seas are all good. Junk is worth a listen if you like M83 but it's quite disappointing.
