How can you appreciate modern classical when you have no appreciation for previous eras... Classical is an objective art form and to say that Feldman is the pinnacle of it is a joke.

And no I'm not boldfaure, I just don't understand the modern classical circle-jerk with no actual love for actual classical music, people like l_s are guilty of it as well

has anyone else noticed how formulaic boldfaure's reviews are? Take a pop album, and explain how it works or not based on how it does or doesn't live up to classical music standards, name dropping whoever's slightly relevant, of course. Then, give some completely insubstantial reviews of classical music to to prove you actually listen to it.

I don't want to hate on anyone, and I thought maybe he'd be cool because I want to get into a wider variety of classical, but god it drips with pretention and betrays no interesting knowledge or research
>>
>>64633622
Seriously the best way to listen to classical music is just to jump directly in and listen to whatever. I started with Bach's cello and violin pieces then Chopin's piano stuff and onto other incredibly famous and acclaimed works.
>>
>>64633669
sure, I agree. it's like everything else, listen to what you want to listen to. That said, there is something that tempts me to see who listens to classical music and is considered knowledgeable in this "social circle" and to compare myself

Most people don't know much about politics, but we say "I'll have to research this more. With more experience and research I could form a well nuanced opinion on this issue." Naturally, we don't always end up doing this. Trump doesn't know politics either, but he goes with it. it's the general difference between politicians and citizens, and even moreso the difference between tastemakers and other RYMers because if tastemakers actually had anything worth saying, they'd be writing about music anywhere else
>>
>>64634063

I'm still nice to most people on RYM, unless they're the pretentious teenagers that I've *always* hated.

Are you one of them? Is that why you're offended/triggered by me or something?

I have no quarrel with the vast majority of RYMers or ones ITT.

desu it's not that bouldfaure's reviews are any worse than anyone else's, but that to think of anything on rym as impressive in the slightest bit is pathetic and arrogant. you are literally just telling other people how much you liked music. if you "rise to the top" and are anything but silence about it, it's pretty embarrassing.

I'd say straight up calling people immature and shallow is more than a vague "air", honestly.
I'll admit that it's a lot less blatant in your reviews, so perhaps the way we read those is influenced by the way you post on /mu/, because the only bouts of condescension in your reviews are the needless inpersonal attacks you include in them sometimes. those seem more like you have some personal grudge with certain people on RYM though and uh, that's none of my business but it doesn't seem like a good use of anyone's time.

I disagree, I think it's fair to call people shallow if they show a real lack of a WANT to discover new music, new ideas.
>so perhaps the way we read those is influenced by the way you post on /mu/, because the only bouts of condescension in your reviews are the needless inpersonal attacks you include in them sometimes.

mainly because there's nothing of substance here 90% of the time lmao
also yeah my reviews sometimes targeted people, which is again because I don't take them very seriously (the reviews).
that being said two reasons I stopped
1) it's pointless irritation that doesn't solve much to be in a review

I'm not really arguing about whether it's fair or not as much as I am saying I feel it doesn't achieve anything other than irritating everyone involved. Surely there's more constructive ways to deal with something like this. I know this is /mu/ but I want to retain a bit of that naivety

I voted for it, but only because I think there should be a way to tag electronic punk stuff like Suicide and Atari Teenage Riot as punk without putting them on the rock charts, since they're not rock

>>64636040
Suicide is rock though, just very minimalist and with different instrumentation (individual songs from the album are tagged as krautrock and rockabilly or something too). Atari Teenage not sure, last time I listened to them was two years ago, but I don't think adding a punk rock secondary is a bad idea.

>>64636054
Depends. It's my favorite, but it's probably not on the top 100 of bests ever. Songs like Manhoo and Fiery Gun Hand are some of the best songs ever though. Best rock album ever is TVU&N

because in no world is a song that sounds like blur one of the best songs of all time
>>
>>64636482

>>
>>64636364
Because of the unique and original chorus. For the whole song only the first half of the chorus gets played, until reaching the ending of the song, where the second half of the chorus gets played. 5hats one of my favorite moments in music ever too.
This Heat's Horizontal Hold is also one of the best songs ever for a similar but kind of opposite reason. That one isn't in my top 100 like Manhoo, but top 1000 instead.
The Blur comparison is irrelevant.
I don't care if you are trolling.
>>
>>64636572
>For the whole song only the first half of the chorus gets played, until reaching the ending of the song, where the second half of the chorus gets played
then is the "second half" really a chorus, rather than a bridge or something?
>>
>>64636572
That's called a bridge

to consider what would be a standard run of the mill britpop song from the 90s if it became a mega hit means you have lackluster taste in music

i'm sure you would tell me to "listen to more music and branch out, it's okay if you still sometimes listen to your old music just don't consider it good" if i said that blur's sunday sunday or supergrass's mansize rooster were two of the best songs ever because its just the same thing

If you had your reasons to consider them the best, then sure. Maybe I wouldn't agree with you, but if you were being honest then your candidates for best songs should be considered.
Manhoo doesn't sound like a run of the mill britpop song. It's way too layered to be one, for example.

So a thought on solo violin music by polly bradfield:
it IS pretty stupid imo to defend it for doing something revolutionary and having historical importance (it didn't and doesn't), or for its textures (squeak) (although that's a little more valid, the tape hiss is pretty beautiful and the violin is ALWAYS a pretty instrument, even though the weird tape echo sucks. but I digress). Somehow it's really captivating in its composition and form. maybe it's not much better describing something in abstract terms, but it sounds like a cry for help by some wounded dying soul, and it draws you in out of sympathy. it makes you confront your own mortality by watching someone die. and it makes you consider the 'life' of the instrument the violin itself. that one dismissive review that said it sounded like the violin was being tortured was actually fairly on point, except for the fact that it wasn't a cruel endeavor; in fact it's very sympathetic to have something so unappealing and crippled end up sad and profound enough to elicit the listener's sympathy. The main problem is it sounded like the thing was dead after the first part... I didn't know what to do with the second two. it's not like a death rattle has stanzas.
