so I just Kanye'd a copy of Rocksmith the other and tried plugging my practice amp's headphone out to a USB audio interface to play the game.

the problem is: the signal that comes out is way too hot for the game to register it properly so my question is this:

is it worth spending 30 bucks on the truetone cable to play the game?
>>
>>64628217
there are mods that let you use a desktop microphone in place of the realtone cable

I just bought the realtone cable though. It works good and was worth it
>>

Turn the gain down on the interface input then m8.

They're fantastic once you get the hang of them. Takes me about an hour to change string gauge, tuning, setup, stretch and tune.

Just another skill to practice. Once they're setup and the strings stretched they're INCREDIBLY stable bridges.

I was discussing music and guitars, which is the subject of this thread. you can report me if you want, but since i did not break any of the rules, the mods won't ban me.

I agree with you here, and I agree with you that liking the tone of whatever pickup is subjective, but why are you so against trying another pickup? Why are you so convinced that the pickups your guitar has are the pickups you'd like the best when you haven't even tried any others?

I looked up Rakuten, and factoring shipping and GST, it should roughly be the same.

>>
>>64630924
Thanks for trying to help me anon and thanks for being nice.

I did not say i'm completely closed to trying different pick ups, but i will say i do not like the idea of messing with the electronic parts of my guitar, especially the soldering part since i literally never soldered electronics components.

I think maybe if i will encounter for some reason another Ibanez RG with different pick ups, i will listen to it and see how it differs from mine. but as of now, i'm okay with my current pick ups, especially after seeing in video comparisons that the differences between those pick ups and the Dimarzio pick ups are so subtle that after video compression they are extremely hard to distinguish from one another... when i invest in audio equipment i want to have a significant audible difference, you know.
>>
>>64631118
It's not bad. Its difficult to find MIJs marked down anywhere unless you visit Japan or something.
I don't think you'll find any better, but still take your time before making the decision.

>>64631191
These are things you need to try out in person honestly. You can't really gauge the responsiveness or hotness of pickups from a video.
YouTube videos are hardly helpful.
>>
>>64631269
What pickup "hotness" means?
>>
What app helps me get into guitar? I tried yousician, but you have to pay to learn properly
>>
>>64631191
iirc somebody said the comparison you posted was between other Ibanez in house pickups, not to mention a lot of youtube demos will use some awful microphone. I've never soldered either, but it seems pretty simple, and seems like a worthwhile thing to learn especially as a guitar player. I've NEVER heard anything but bad things about Ibanez pickups though, so that's why everyone is trying to convince you to switch em out.
Also I believe the electronics in most guitars are pretty simple so if you mess it up somehow, you can figure it out pretty easily with google.

This comparison is between DiMarzio "the crunch lab" and a v8:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkcULu1_Tmw

If you don't look at the graphs that tell you there is a difference, they are very hard to distinguish from one another.

also, I heard some people say the V8 and V7 are not nearly as bad as some people say they are, but that doesn't really matter, even if everyone else thought they are bad, i really like the sound of the clean v7 myself for the type of music i make. how good a pick-up is, is directly related to what music you play using it.
>>
>>64628781

>>64631481

There's a difference in the clean sounds, it's not very obvious but it's clear enough to be heard.

Distortion on the other hand...
>>
>>64631481
The dirty tones in this comparison sound pretty similar, but the clean demos definitely sound better on the crunch lab. Go with whatever you like though. That's what life is all about

>>
So.. I decided to compare the Dimarzio Air Norton to the INF1 Ibanez pickup..

Obviously it's not a fair comparision, the Dimarzio guitar has an Edge, while the INF1 uses the Gibraltar bridge. They are strung with .9 and .11 respectively.

Interesting results though. You can hear the Air Norton is much higher output.

https://clyp.it/3n5nkvbh
>>

The sounds you can get from effects are sounds that you will never get without effects.

It all depends what you are looking for. if you look for a chorus sound, for example, you are going to need a chorus effect. if you just want a clean sound, then yes, you dont need to buy a chorus pedal.

It all depends what is your musical vision and what you are trying to achieve.

On the flipside, whilst I'm primarily interested in picking (and Nick Drake in particular), I'm trying to improve my strumming. I don't use plectrums because I think they sound abrasive, but when I use my thumb, it sounds uneven and clunky.

How do I get a mix of softness and percussiveness in strumming?

Soundhole pickup, internal microphone, or piezo bridge are your main options. The first two don't necessarily require permanent modification to your guitar, and the third might not if you're clever.

This. If you're not messing with any actual switches and only switching pickups, you're pretty good, it's only the one wire from each. Or, have a tech do it for you. But, try out other pickups in a store first or see what pickups (and in what combination) that artists with a sound close to yours use. Also, make sure your aren't missing extras, like a mid-boost or a slight effect of some sort.

>ONLY through effects
Pretty much, yeah. Other than some harmonizers (to a point) and whammy pedals(also to a point), you need effects to get certain sounds, unless you want to get a tube amp, go old school and overdrive the tubes for distortion, and even then, you'll just have the overdriven distortion.

>>64632097
Read anything and everything that interests you. Berklee has a free songwriting course on a website called Coursera, also, there's a book called Writing Better Lyrics by Pat Pattison, who also teaches that class, that's good. If you don't want to buy the book, one piece of advice I can recommend is to write for like 10 minutes every morning, right after you get up, pick an object or a thought and focus on it and write everything that comes to mind. It's an exercise in being able to pull up thoughts from the back of your mind and make them flow naturally when you write. Eventually, you should be able to do it relatively easily.

There's no shame in buying a lyric writing book and/or rhyming dictionary.

Rewind to sophmore year of high school. Friend has a guitar (he doesn't play anymore and didn't even play at the time, which is kind of annoying, seeing as how he had the damn thing lying around), I dicked around with it, I knew no chords at all and so I kind of made up scales. I recorded a short clip of something I made up, sent it to my girlfriend at the time because I was dogsitting for he and his mom that day, she thought it sounded nice (she liked Taylor Swift and most pop, so, I don't know indicative of any talent I had was) and guitarplayersgetmadtail.wav, having musical talent makes you more well rounded, and I've loved music since as far back as I can remember. I got a Dean acoustic for my birthday that year, fell in love with the thing, a Pacifica Strat with two single coils and a humbucker for Christmas and now I'm probably going to major in music.

Valvestates are tube preamp and ss poweramp, not full ss.
Peavey stuff goes for pretty cheap, especially in the US where you can find 5150/6505 and Valveking heads easily, and those could definitely work.

I take lessons and from time to time my teacher comes up with some solo like Highway Star or something, but I usually learn the whole thing in 30 minutes. I never cared about playing what others invented, I always wanted to create my own music.

Will learning to play songs I like improve my guitar skillz faster than just playing random stuff?

With a humbucker it would sound even muddier. I was going for more of a raw black metal sound with that high end growl.

But yeah I definitely wouldn't recommend jazzy solid state amps for metal. Lots of better options. Fender Bassmans sound really good with distortion pedals (and great for jazz) I don't know if you can get one in your country, look for a 1970s model for the best price.
>>

Not really saying they aren't, they just fall more under stoner rock which is very similar to metal but it runs with the stuff I like in metal and takes out most of the cheesey stuff metal has that I don't really like that much anymore
>>64637939
See this is a great example of what I like about Sabbath, stuff like this. Master of Reality is my favorite album and maybe that is why I don't see them as just a metal band like Priest or Maiden, they just don't seem very similar really
>>
>>64638259
In LPs, it kind of works when the gold hardware ages. The whole guitar shape gives some kind of "old" feeling.
But on superstrats, rusted gold hardware looks horrible in my opinion.

i can't really mimic other guitar players well. when i was first starting out i learned solos and stuff, but i really have no desire to learn anyone's solos anymore. here and there i learn licks that i like in certain solos but that's pretty much it.

i think it's fine to learn some solos when you're starting out just to get an idea of how players build them, but i'm just not interested in it anymore. i just don't see the point in breaking my ass trying to mimic someone
>>
>>64638350
I think this will do what you want

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XBlender?adpos=1o1&creative=103263529321&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAjwgbG5BRDp3oW3qdPiuCwSJAAQmoSD0r3DuPSJs2q6n0cVRdzomG2QJNr8j3y32XIVYW6mExoCunLw_wcB

The EBS Billy Sheehan drive has two separate loops for your clean and dirty signals within the pedal but I'm not sure if you can merge them back to mono.

The Ampeg SCR-DI pedal has an overdrive circuit that gets layered on top of your clean sound as a parallel signal so it is essentially what you're trying to do in a simpler format.

Only downside is the mids are cut only and bass/treble are boost only (flat is bass at 0 mid all the way up and treble at 0) so if you want more mids you'll have to run something into it.

You can find them for $250 used.

thom yorke/jonny and kurt cobain, i remember being 14 and obsessing over their bands, i never made any progress because i realised i hated guitar and prefered bass, but if it wasnt for them i wouldnt be playing bass

I did own a 410 for a while, switched to another 115 cause it fit better with the VB-2, and yes it does have low mid punch of a sealed ampeg cab. Also I'm sorry you feel that way about the bugera cab. I will agree with you that there are much better cabs to run the orange out of, and I've been primarily using the orange with the hartke's for rehearsal at my drummer's house and live use. But for what its worth its not complete shit, its actually pretty decent. But now that I just picked up the 2x15 Peavey cab I might just sell it to recoup the $325 I spent on the peavey rig.

Top fag anon.
Some people may like it but I do not.
And it feels like you're going down in pitch at the end of every sentence which makes it a little bit irritating.

lmao i hate it 2. is it possible to learn to sing good coming from the level im at?

i cant control my voice
>>

Everyone can get a good voice, all it takes is patience, work and seeing your own mistakes.

both shredding and tremolo picking are fine

>>
>>64641551
As someone who doesn't
yes they are.

>>64641552
I have less trouble tapping with two hands and doing slappy tappy than playing classical fingerstyle
>>
I feel like playing guitar makes me a better person.

Are you sure its a black widow loaded 215? Some of the earliest Pevey 215s from the 70s had pretty wimpy speakers in them.

Thats good to hear about the AK cabs. I used to own an svt 810, and before that a stack of two svt 115s.

I downsized my rig though, sold the VB-2 to a local kid for $500.

I actually had some repair work done on my VB-2 a few years back.

I talked plenty with Robert Baldwin who designed the amp (he's active on TalkBass and very helpful), and had him work on in personally, he ended up putting in 6CA7s instead of EL34s in mine before I downsized and got rid of it.

Spend about twice as much on the guitar
>>
>>64634563
Initially, it was for a grill that I really liked (Which I still sadly do because oneitis), but recently I've been wanting to learn theory and I want to "compose", so that is my current motivation.
>>
>>64643168

>tfw saw a lefty SG at pawn shop for 300 bucks
>>
>>64643168
as someone who is left handed
I learned how to play right handed
shits great yo
>>
>>64642934
Neat, I was planning on putting JJ KT77's in mine once I get it back from my friend and return his Orange. My VB-2 has stock Ruby's in it so I'm sure the JJ's will be a bigger improvement.
>>
>>64643239

You're pretty much Hendrix
>>
>>64643168
Lots of guitars look cool upside down. Get an epiphone firebird and you'll have a lefty non-reverse firebird. Kind of..
>>
>>64643287
nah, hendrix played left and just strung the strings incorrectly (backwards)
why more lefty musicians don't do it is beyond me
>>
>>64643449

Because then the cord is often in an awkward position
