It's the 5th of May (but nearly the sixth)

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, just let the good times flow.

We are all just poseurs though and the pleb/patrician stuff is just a meme (and if there is some truth to it the distinction surely isn't made on whether you do or don't like certain albums).
What do you like? Why don't you join us?

Not true tho
we have new people all the time and they fit in easily
I felt like this for some time (I lurked for about 4-5 months), but once you post it's just really nice!
Also we always have Somedumbcunt, who contributes into the negative space, so whatever you do, it's hard to get worse than that...
(also one of my biggest things with /daily/ is that I have the feeling that it seems like a too closed-off community, which I'm sure none of us wants)

The whole point of these threads is to discuss what we listen to and thankfully there's always someone here who's heard it and willing to give their opinion. If someone hasn't heard that usually means two things:
1. You better use that gem in a tourney so natkingcole can stop thinking he's such hot stuff
2. FISH will do what his name implies and devour it (he's p much cthulhu: consumer of bad music)

Very short "synopsis" I guess.

>Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
Has some nice playing, but isn't exciting overall. ~

>McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
Like I've come to expect from Tyner, the piano playing was exceptional. I wasn't to sure about the rest though, but the piano makes up for it all. +

>Murcof - Martes
Somes bloopy bleeps with absolutely beautiful string arrangements. +

>Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
I'm very not sure about this. Some sections are amazing and the instrumentation can be very layer and nice, but sometimes this Dan-boy just keeps saying lalalalalala for quite a long time in quite an annoying voice, so I'm not all to sure about that. This very well might grow on me so I'm torn between ~ and +.

>Dave Holland Quintet - Conference of the Birds
Mind blowing stuff. Probably good, but I'll have to make sense of this over multiple listens. ?

Tournament idea: /daily/ Survivor style.

16 people enter, only one leaves. Those who lose are killed off and can never post in /daily/ again. Would be a great way to filter 15 trips with shit taste out every time. If we did it enough eventually it would just be like 3 guys left (not including me, of course, I'd lose first round).

Who wants to do this? (This is not a call for a new tourney. Do not reply to this with "reserved.") ((goddamnit it's gonna happen now fuck))

here come dat hampus. question: do you categorize gospel as a stub of trad? why or why not?
>>
>>64625065
Oh boy it's another episode of "Is it traditional or not?" with your favourite host Hampus! In this weeks episode, we consider whether gospel can be classified as traditional music or not. What will the answer be? Stay tuned to find out!

No, I don't really know. I'm not well versed with gospel. I'd say... probably some of it? The texts are generally already written, aren't they? But the musical element is taught through oral tutelage? They don't write it down. right?
>>
>>64625137
Interestingly, wiki has this to say

>Although most familiar to speakers of English in the context of Christian churches, hymns are also a fixture of other world religions, especially on the Indian subcontinent. Hymns also survive from antiquity, especially from Egyptian and Greek cultures. Some of the oldest surviving examples of notated music are hymns with Greek texts
>>
>>64625170
If we're talking all hymns then there are definitely examples of art music - like ars nova and stuff. Let me consult Oxford Music.

>>64625236
From a very cursory reading, it seems that gospel is in fact distributed primarily through means of composing and writing, not through oral tradition. However it seems that through its spread by missionaries it has entered oral tradition in some places (OxMu doesn't specify where), so in that case it would be traditional in those places, but art music which "[in] addition to drawing on sacred sources, [..] typically incorporates elements of popular music styles."

>Aine O'Dwyer - Anything Bright or Startling?
Stellar work, very cohesive. I was completely mesmerized by the delicate, continuous stream of the harp. The album also features glimpses of other instruments and makes you travel to an enchanting, ethereal world. Gorgeous. O'Dwyer is perhaps the most interesting artist currently out there for me.
9/10

>Ravi Shankar - Music of India: Three Classical Rāgas
Ok I liked this but it's not really mindblowing. You probably already know what it sounds like before even listening to it. I know I will probably return to it when I'll be in the right mood.

I had a lot of fun listening to this. I didn't expect the lyrics but I liked them, they added a great touch to the already frantic music. The repetitive bass is the best.

James Chance and the Contortions - Buy
really liked this, it's more focused and controlled than most no-wave music; there's an attempt at melody made, but it all comes together in the strangest way
some of it didn't land as well as I would've liked and it's hard to articulate why exactly that is
the 'review' for this thing says nothing I'm a poseur

Cleft - Bosh
very high energy math rock
I usually don't go for math rock because it tends to be wankadelic and work itself into stagnation too quickly but this was pretty goud, really liked the textures on this thang

This promotional run for LP9. Started off awesome when they deleted their social media presence, then they teased some stuff and introduced Burn the Witch, which was also cool. Bernard Parmegiani - Sonare
This was pretty interesting, really liked the way that the first track seemed to be made out of the moonlight sonata. Also liked the soundscapy elements of this, they were very good
not all of it is soundscapy which I would have preferred, but you've piqued my interest in the artist

Gastr del Sol - 20 Songs Less
the ideas on this thing are really developed for a two track EP, the tracks here do meander a bit, but that's the point, it's wistful without being fake and I always appreciate music like that

Peter Brötzmann Octet - The Complete Machine Gun Sessions
wew lad, this took like 6 listens to dissect
this perfectly conveys a particular image in the listener's consciousness; that of the chaos of modern warfare, the fact that it does so whilst also being free improv is extremely impressive. With the staccato obviously representing machine gun fire and sax screams repping real screams ect ect
I was struck also by how lively the instrumentation is as well, it must have taken a lot out of the musicians to play this

Bottomless Pit.jpg
36 KB, 800x800
Finished relistening to Bottomless Pit. The last three tracks are far better than the rest, but if this album as a whole is any indicator, DG is definitely running out of ideas or something. Even if I wasn't a huge fan, I could appreciate the band's commitment to exploring all possible avenues of their style and experimenting with their sound across their discography, but this album seems be a bit featureless. It's really hard to pin down what, if anything, separates it from any other DG effort. On top of that, the tracks aren't particularly catchy or memorable. So with no cool new stylistic or melodic ideas, I'm not sure what this album has going for it.

Also, the album cover gets to me. Anyone have a better alternative cover?

>Not sure what quantitative rating I'd give this, but it wouldn't be that good. Probably 2.5/5 or something.

Oh and what's up with that pyramid anyway? A bunch of those, especially at the higher levels, while commonly associate with a particular end product aesthetic, are more compositional methods than genres. Why are they in there with regular old genres, which classify the end product? Just to mess with people?

Nowhere on the pyramid does it say genres. Also that world music list is 28 albums out of date.

>Les Sculpteurs de Vinyl - Memory & Money
Avant Girl Talk. Lot’s of noises, out of context audio, and unusual samples, and it all blends together very well. I could definitely see this becoming a new favorite of mine.

>Rudimentary Peni - Cacophony
It’s avant, it’s weird, it’s noisy, but ultimately I’m not super into it. Sometimes the vocals bug me and the production is kinda shitty. Good choice, but I’m not quite feeling it.

I listened to this over the last days and was not disappointed. It's really an amalgamation of all my favourite music genres : drone, ambient, free folk, psych rock... >Janine Jansen - Le Quattro Stagioni
I’m not really one for the older, well-regarded classical pieces. I mean… I'll usually moderately enjoy them, but I it’s rare that I’ll really love any of them. That’s pretty much how I felt about this. Also harpsichords are annoying.

>Mariah - Utakata no Hibi
A bizarre bit of Japanese… pop? I don’t know what to call it, it seems like techno pop in the vein of YMO or something, but at the same time it’s jazzy and psychedelic and experimental and and and and I don’t know I like it.
