Jesus wept

Can't wait to listen to this shit. How does it compare to his other two albums? Is it better than Overgrown but inferior to the s/t?
>>
>>64614350
It came out 40 minutes ago and the album is 75 minutes long. Please stop asking for opinions on the whole album. also it's his best album yet it completely shits on both of the other two listen asap senpai
>>
>>64614350
Better than Overgrown. mate. Just below self-titled for me so far. They're so close though, I feel like this LP has a distinct sound, it's not as diluted or monotone as Overgrown. There's something about this album that sounds so British, can't quite put my finger on it.

just hit me how on-to-the-next-one our generation is

ive listened to five 2016 albums today and going through teh downloading process for this sixth one is making me think about how people before the internet listened to albums. they bought it, looked through the physical vinyl/cd packaging.. it felt real to them.. then they'd actually listen to the album and do nothing else. we shitpost while we listen to this stuff and don't get half of it outside of "yeah this sounds cool for backgruond music"

they'd spend weeks on one album and we breeze through 6 albums in less than 12 hours.

i dont know maybe something for everyone to think about we should stop listening to music and go back to breathing

>>
>>64616593
People into music these days can become exposed to literally thousands or tens of thousands of artists with great ease and not much cost.

Back when it was more difficult to get your hands on an actual album, the lower exposure means each new album you heard could sound really good, or even ground-breaking. But when you've heard like 300 albums or 8,000 songs over the course of a year, you get used to certain sounds and tropes, and you need something REALLY good to truly captivate you.

Music is very much like a drug. Not just psychologically, but physiologically. It releases dopamine, and you can grow tolerant to that release.

Compare someone who uses some drug once every 2 weeks to someone who uses it 3 times a day day every day. The former will cherish each experience and probably get a lot more enjoyment out of each session. For the latter, drugs are just their background noise.

I prefer it this way. More competition means more experimentation, new genres, and more refined tastes. 15 years ago, most people on /mu/ would probably be content with their shitty taste because they'd been exposed to so few artists; they wouldn't know much else. Now everyone can actually group music into things they really like and things they don't like, with some degree of precision.

To put it in Pitchfork terms anyway.

It's a good album, not his best, but JB has a pretty good discography at this point.

>“The dance music community is where the most embittered critics hang out,” Blake says matter-of-factly. “You can’t read a website such as Resident Advisor without noticing that the comment section is full of people saying, ‘I preferred his old stuff.’ That’s the dance music cliche. I now find it hilarious. I used to find it a bit scary. That happens wherever you go. If I started making gamelan music, people would say: ‘I preferred his old polyrhythms.’ You can’t escape it.”

>>
>>64618876

Hot damn, I think the best sequence on this album actually is Choose Me -> Forest Fire -> Noise Above Our Heads

My Willing Heart is a grower too, and that would be right at the beginning. Okay, yeah this pretty fucking good.
>>
Yeah Noise Above Our Heads is also great. That sample loop is groovy as fuck and that bass groove is pure sex
>>
Put That Away is apparently about his struggles making the album. He got super stressed putting it together and started smoking a lot of weed.
>>
It's not a bad album, by any means. I'd even say it's better than his second album, but still neither have come anywhere close to his self titled.

James Blake, unfortunately, embodies regression. Whatever. I'll just wait a few years til he realizes this and goes back to less conventional songwriting methods.

I dsagree. There isn't a lot on this one that is quite immediate, but after a few listens, the greatness of like 3/4 of this album starts showing.
>>
>>64619149

I mean this album's genius, as far as I can gather so far, is in the arrangement of samples to create ambiance (A Viibe lol).

There's a lot of really subtle textural sampling/synthesis buzzing around in these tracks. I still don't get why it has to be so long tho.

Hi.
What's wrong with my review?
>>
>>64621065

nothing man, d'angelo is pretty nice tho you should give him another shot
>>
I'm having to shuffle these on the Spotify free mobile app. I'm high as fuck. 2 songs in this is fucking incredible. I've almost cried at how good this is.
>>
>>64621139
oh no I'm not saying D'Angelo is bad, I'm just saying that I see this on par with like highly thoughtful classical music, it's a very high art

honestly Black Messiah would be my pick for AOTY 2014
>>
>>64621065
reviewing an album on rym literally after one listen, using words like titanic, impressionistic and comparing it with classical music is the equivalent of posting on /mu/ AOTY hour an a half after release
>>
>>64621396
>literally after one listen
you mean four listens but ok
>using words like titanic, impressionistic and comparing it with classical music is the equivalent of posting on /mu/ AOTY hour an a half after release
titanic because he's effectively a pop star
80 minutes is a long album for him

impressionistic and classical music are appropriate given his style of composition, listen to the harmonies man. it's not absentmindedness
>>
>>64621396
Well it's better then most of releases until now from this desu
>>
>>64621065
the cover is not impressionism. at all. it's a fucking watercolour.
>>
>>64621606
Not that anon, but are you fucking retarded? Impressionism is all about the 'impression' a scene gives - lacking of fine detail and shit, but often a sort of ghostly overview. That's exactly what the cover is.

Watercolour is a medium, impressionism is a style. Fuck.

Keep doing you, big words don't mean a thing to me if they're used correctly. Art is subjective and there's nothing wrong with taking it to heart. There's no proper way to review something, just make sure you're reviewing it and not going off on a tangent. That's personally all I care about
>>
>>64619262
right here
>>
Does Frank Ocean sing or rap on this? Please god.
>>
It's lit
>>
>>64621828
no
>>
>>64621828
I *think* so? There's someone on one of the tracks who sounds like him. But it's very subtle, it's not like a dedicated verse or chorus or anything.
>>
>>64621846
I'm p. sure he is definitely on one of the tracks, can't remember which, but it definitely sounds exactly like him.

But it's basically a backing vocal so...
>>
>>64621930
hm...what a slippery character

What track, friend?
>>
>>64621828
he has writing credits on 2 songs but no features
>>
>>64621951
Honestly, I can't remember - each listen I've been high as shit lol. It's somewhere near the middle of the album though.

(maybe Choose Me?)
>>
>"“If I was still talking about not getting laid when I was 18 then …” Is that what the first album’s about? “Well … yeah.” He laughs. “There’s a subtext of loneliness and not getting any.
Is this why /mu/ loves S/T so much?
>>
>>64615229
Are you a fan of Polish films?
>>
I recently ran through my first listen. The Bon Iver collab is great, as is "Choose Me." "Modern Soul" is still it, though. Gave me chills after listening to almost the whole rest of the album.
>>
>>64616829

>>
Aoty?
>>
>>64622353
nah - my money is on Radiohead. This definitely the best so far though.
>>
There's a download on rutracker but I don't know where they would have gotten it from other than just ripping the Spotify stream if that's possible. And it's not verified.

The album has a 4.04 right now on RYM which is interesting. Probably just people overrating something new like what always happens but it's still apparently pretty good.
>>
>>64622213
Thank man out of the 10 who said no thx, you're the only one who said it was nice and that's all I need to make me happy for doing what I love the most! :D
>>
>>64622421
Seems to be fine. The spectrometer looks right for a 320 copy. Does Spotify stream in 320? Maybe they somehow ripped it from there.
>>
>>64622421
nah - there was a 320 leak, and I'm p. sure it's in this thread actually
>>
>>64622506
yeah, you can opt for HQ streaming on spotify
>>
Just finished.

Hoooly shit that was nice.
>>
>>64622777
Trips confirm album of the decade. Gonna be listening to it soon.
>>

Loving it so far but liked I hope my life the least
>>

Was making pizza. I'm glad I could make this all possible.
>>
>>64623150
