honestly i don't know what it is about the beatles that i really like less than the beach boys.
i think it's a combination of things. i like the lush instrumentation and harmonies of the beach boys better than the more sparse instrumentation of the beatles.
i like brian wilson's jazz influence (gershwin and stuff) more than the beatles more rock/skiffle background (you can really hear this in don't talk).
there's no doubt both groups were geniuses melodically but i just can't get over these personal things

No music is ever truly "finished". An artist could work on an album or song indefinitely. Smile Sessions is what we have from that period of creation, put together very carefully and thoughtfully. Alan Boyd (one of the creators of Smile Sessions) came to my universities music school and spoke. He said Brian came in to one of their work sessions and said it sounds pretty much like what he was envisioning. Keep in mind the Beach Boys worked on it for a few years.

This movie is whats driving the reddit Brian craze. It made everyone one dimensional and portrayed Mike as a cartoon villain. I thought Brian came off as a total load desu. He screwed over his band and left them out of the creative process and then cried that he didn’t get to be himself in someone else band. Why didn’t Brian quit the Beach Boys if he wanted to do his own thing? Because his bands popularity and their touring gave him the money and freedom to allow him to hang out with his hipster friends and be the sensitive creative that reddit loves. It’s just ridiculous propaganda trying to demonize Mike, who just wanted to keep the band alive and successful. Instead he’s portrayed as a capitalistic satanic figure trying to destroy the band. Mike has always been my favorite Beach Boy and this movie does nothing to sway my opinion.

artistic evolution is a natural thing, and mike definitely did nothing to help brian through that, especially with the mental illness and stuff.

essentially god only knows has a very ambiguous key and uses a ton of inversions, particularly third inversions. what this means is that the bass notes often will be the 5th or the 7th of the chord he's playing, which may sound dissonant or strange by itself, but actually allows him a lot more freedom, and of course lets him create what is probably one of the best basslines of all time in the song
i don't think the bass note before the chorus is a Bb though, I think it's just a B, which walks down nicely from the E before (E->D#->C#->B)

I like Sgt. Pepper, but I feel like it goes in too many directions. The first two tracks make me think we're going to have a fake concert by a fictional band (With a Little Help is probably one of my favorite Beatles songs). That seems to go on until Fixing a Hole, Leaving Home, and that song about the kite, and the George Harrison sitar shit. It definitely breaks the feeling for me.
The album ends amazingly though.
I'd probably pick Pet Sounds simply because I love That's Not Me.
