You're asking the wrong question, friend. That's a bit like asking to compare 1st, 2nd, & 3rd wave Ska. You can't just lump 400 years of music together under a single heading.

Educate yourself about the different major periods and different national trends; Late Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Modernism, etc.
