Debussy is post-tonal yeah.

The way this is written is a joke right? Why all the legato markings fucking everywhere? And jumbling half notes in the one huge bar at the top?

If by Post-Tonal you mean serial and atonal, I am just going to list the few that sort of came early enough to be considered original. Berg isn't that great.
None of it is "essential."
I know enough about this music to tell you the best.
Webern - Symphony, and assorted works
Schoenberg: Piano Works, Symphony, maybe the weird thing he made with the weird female vocals I forget what it's called
John Cage: Sonatas and Preludes for prepared piano
Stockhausen: check out a few of his works
After that the "genre," if you can call it that, becomes fucking worthless shit and should be completely ignored. IMO. Prove me wrong. There are hundreds of mediocre shit composers that worked in the style like Carter, Babbitt, Ferneyhough. They're all interesting but not essential by any stretch of the imagination. And then you move into stuff that I don't consider "post tonal" and more like a new genre of postmodernism.
Xenakis, Ligeti, Schnittke, Weiss, Cerha. Those are the names that come to mind that are worth listening to and which I wouldn't bunch together with mere atonalism, they're far more interesting.
And Messiaen is better than all of them.
