Is there a single good critic of popular music? It seems like all the people with insightful criticisms are in Jazz or Classical music.
>>
>implying jazz isn't popular music

I want this "jazz is high art above rock and pop" meme to die.

Explain how it isn't clearly above rock and pop and hip hop.
>>

It's inherently popular music that is sold to the masses.

Before you mention how "Ayler is so much different and more innovative than Ellington" be reminded that by doing so you would also have to admit to the fact that "Popul Vuh are so much different and more innovative than The Rolling Stones" and "cLOUDDEAD are so much different and more innovative than Wu-Tang Clan" and thus would also have to include rock and hip hop as high art with classical and jazz.

You're implying that Popol Vuh and cLOUDDEAD have anywhere near the talent of the great Jazz bandleaders/soloists.
>>

You're implying they don't.
>>
>>64586229
They use far simpler rhythms, harmonies, stylings.

They're objectively not as talented.
>>
>>64586257
Okay, even if that is the case, the original argument you made was the jazz isn't pop music. Being talented doesn't automatically stop you from being low brow.
>>
>>64586299
The harmonic, rhythmic, and formal considerations in jazz music definitely stop it from being low brow.
>>
>>64586312
By the same arbitrary standard, the harmonic, rhythmic, and formal considerations in rock and hip hop music also stop them from being low brow.
>>
>>64586377
What are the rhythmic, harmonic, formal considerations of rock and hip hop?
What are their performing traditions that should be adhered to?
