It's like they're allergic to trying to write something good. Every riff they write needs to be as cluttered and frantic as can be with no regard to tone or direction.
Off the bat this is just another death metal album in name only, it has the growls, it has the distortion, and it has the hyper fast drumming, but everything is assembled so mechanically together, topped off with such digital cleanness and shiny pristine, like it wants to seem heavy but is so ashamed to be a part of the scene. There's no passion here, it's like some snobby music professors tried their hands at making "intelligent" death metal, they wrote a checklist for what they thought would be necessary to count as death metal and then filled it with needless complexity for that "intelligent" aspect. Riffs vary between being fast and intricate slurries of notes to being basic, but still fast, death metal chugs you've heard a million times over, everything wrapped up in a brick walled to fuck production where bass is only audible when the band wants to remind you that they do indeed have a bassist. Songs are long, aimless, and twist and turn without any bit of focus. Riff (and I use that term quite loosely here) leading into riff leading into solo leading into riff comprises the song writing ideas here, with some occasional orchestral samples thrown in to make this album seem grander than it is. It's a nauseating and headache inducing experience, while not as annoying as Brain Drill or Monumental Torment, it's equally as flashy and unnecessary. Completely irredeemable garbage with not one decent moment in its duration.

Back in the day I had a group of friends with 5 people including myself. 2 friends listened to only dad rock. One guy only liked metalcore. One guy was into deathcore/techdeath/proge. I was mostly into osdm and 2nd wave bm, didn't really listen to anything past '95. Had a sweet spot for mayhem/darkthrone & death/cynic/atheist. (Found out about music mostly from associated acts and influences second on Wikipedia.)
Next thing you know the group falls apart (girls) and one dad rock bro goes off alone, other dad rock bro and metalcore bro go off together in some band. Me and deathcore bro are still friends. Get into a wider range of music(because of girl) like emo, hip-hop, glam, punk, mostl still listen to metal but start venturing out into different genres.
Fast forward and grill is gone and me and deathcore bro get another guy in our group who is into djent/proge. Now at this point the music I listen to is completely different then at the beginning. Listen to mostly techdeath/proge/djent. Djent bro introduces me to blackgaze(I know.)

With regards to Amenra, I fail to see a lack of energy you speak of. The songs are slow, that's just normal, but they carry a lot of power when they get going.
As for my recs, my recs are akin to my own tastes. As mentioned, I care very little about "originality". I care about sound, and music. The whole picture. I don't listen to a band and be like "Bah, it's just another DsO worship band, next." I listen to it and go "Hmm yea, definitely hearing that influence, but they do some nice things here... hey guys, you may like this!"
That's just my thought process.

The problem with something being trendy is that there are already many bands that sound similair and hearing the same music again doesn't hold the same effect as when listening to the original bands that started the trend, and usually the trendy bands are very dumbed down compared to the og bands, my annoyance reaches it's peak when a lot of the similair bands get praise and I see an oversaturation of the same shit all sounding the same, every band getting more dumbed down with every album, most of them selling out too when they see they can't piggyback off of the same trend and labeling it as "Maturing"
I fail to see how anyone could like amenra tb.h, I cannot go past that terrible tryhard bird-like vocalist and those predictable instrumentals, all the while sacrificing variety in an effort to sound grim and dark when there are millions of bands that did it better than them

The original bands aren't infinite. I see little reason to stick with the originals. Do you really say "Welp, I'm gonna listen to Enemy of the Sun for the 789th time now because obviously nothing by Amenra is as original as it." No one does that. As for the vocals, the screams are excellent, and feel sufficiently wretched to me.
We just gotta agree to disagree here. We value very different things in music. To you trends and over-saturation are bad things, and sure over-saturation can make finding the better stuff a bit difficult, but if it's a sound I enjoy, then all the better. Why wouldn't I want more bands sounding like X if I like X? It's just dumb to me to scoff at the notion of more music.

There's only a handful people in metal that have a style as unique as marty's and that's overstating. Jeff Waters is excellent, but nowhere near the musical prowess and compositional diversity of Friedman when he decides to lay on a solo.
