this was a really good psych-folk album, similar to Baier's Colour Green, but more varied instrumentation and styles, so a little more compelling in that regard. not sure whose songwriting I prefer, though.

What's with this sudden worship of Elephant 6 bands in pop culture? They're seriously just non-talent acts that take the very little of what's likeable about 60s psych rock bands and record it "low-fidelity" ham-fistedly and add obstreperous "experimentation" I mean why does anyone like this?

>>64591063
I sort of agree
The synth pop songs are amazing pieces of modern art pop and I find myself returning to them consistently. But I thought that the ambient sections were mostly dull in the context of the album and they really kill the energy sometimes. a lot could've been cut out.

Well idk. Isn't vaping meant for people that are addicted to tobacco? I know people do it for taste, smoke tricks, and for the trendieness of it, but I thought that was the main reason anyways.

They were vaping some banana-esque smell and the kitchen with the mix of pizza sauce, dough, soap and fat banana clouds made the place smell like shit.

it's time for more shit tier reviews for my freeform chart

Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles

Before this, I had not listened to a single Xiu Xiu album. I think if I intend to listen to more Xiu Xiu stuff this was a good entry point cause I really enjoyed it. It's pretty fun with its almost chiptuneseque production, mixture of styles, edgy lyrics and all that shit. I'll definitely try listening to at least one other Xiu Xiu album because of this. 4/5.

Orchid - Chaos is Me

I thought this was fun too. I liked the fast playing, screaming and shit but it didn't really leave much of an impact on me. 3.5/5.

Fushitsusha and Rallizes played together a lot back in the 70s, but they fell out somewhere along the line. Journalists or fans looking to find out what happened to Mizutani after 1997 tried asking Haino, who either ignored them or got mad. One of the people who performed with him in Japan tried asking on the behalf of some investigators, and he got "emotional" (didn't specify how).

I'm guessing he's maybe mad at him for dropping off the face of the Earth unexpectedly without saying bye to anyone.

Don't feel like formatting or anything. My Favorite Things was nice, especially the piano, makes me hyped for some more McCoy Tyner, so I will listen to some tomorrow.
Army of Shadows was great. Just as stylish as Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge, but much more serious in its story, which made for a refreshing movie.

Krautrocksampler

Not reading, but the Keiji Haino and Otomo Yoshihide interviews Red Bull did are necessary as well. Haino's isn't that great because the interviewer is awful but it's still interesting, but Yoshihide's is A+ in general.

I didn't retain any of the songs to the names, especially since most were not in a language I do not speak, but I specifically remember liking the female vocalist far more than the male one.

I was surprised that I had heard albums by both of the members unknowingly (Sunshower and Pacific) though it was much easier to pick up from the female vocalist, since her solo music (at least the very little I've heard) is much more similar to that album.

I'd say I enjoy the Taeko Ohnuki tracks either equally or more than the Tatsuro and Kunio tracks too with the exception of Down Town which is probably my favorite song on the album
>I was surprised that I had heard albums by both of the members unknowingly (Sunshower and Pacific)

Just kidding I’m dropping it now lmao

Round 1 Reviews pt. 2: Jesus, I Listened to 64 Albums in Like a Week Edition

ImposterTuco
Sunn O))) – White1
I’ve liked what I’ve heard from these guys but this kinda sucked. I don’t feel like the spoken word parts really added to the epic ambience that I’ve come to love from these guys. This wasn’t nearly as heavy or as interesting or endearing as their other stuff.
3.5- triangle’s friend Sarah moves on!

Co’s roommate
Christopher Cross – s/t
Rock so soft it’s practically talc. Reminds me of my dad. Tracks like “Sailing” are the contemporary Pop/Rock songs that Mike Love would make if he was talented.
6.0+ Co’s roommate moves on!

Tuco’s Friend
Bedhead – Whatfunlifewas
Noisey slowcore. Extremely satisfying and building. If some parts weren’t so, ya know, slow, I feel like I would’ve liked this more. However, I feel like that would’ve entirely detracted from the somber atmosphere which was extremely tangible. Maybe I’m just a fucking idiot and so is anyone who takes these “reviews” seriously.
7.5- Tuco’s friend beat out my friend and moves on!

Kevorkian’s Brother
RA the Rugged Man – Die, Rugged Man, Die
A lot of humorous and occasionally cleaver lyrics, but the beats are real farty and hooks are almost never satisfying. Sampling was pretty dope though.
4.0+ Kev’s brother moves on.

TecnomaLaser5000
Sonic Youth – Bad Moon Rising
Am I stupid or something?? I am the only person I know who doesn’t like this band. Maybe one day it will click, but that day is not today. I enjoyed its more experimental and raw approach than Daydream Nation, but the songs were about twice as shallow and uninteresting with the exception of the 2nd and last track.
4.5- Dogwanderer moves on!

Christgau
Marshall Crenshaw – Field Day
The most generic new wave I’ve ever heard? I don’t know about that. The most generic thing on this chart so far by a wide margin? Yep! Gay Elvis Costello idk this wasn’t good.
3.0- Green Lamp actually moved on. Huh.

Hahahahahaha
>Veronique Chalot – A L’entrée Du Temps Clair
I realized my second time through that this really wasn’t as endearing as I had remembered, but rather I just liked this girls’ voice. The songs were pretty dull and uninteresting on closer inspection imo.
4.5- SDC actually moves on, the mad cunt.

Scaruffi
>Steve Roach – Dreamtime Return
I actually found the new age elements here to be really pleasing, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the tribal influence, mainly because it was just ambient with “nice drums” which didn’t bode well with me.
3.0+ Nyar moves on!

Thomas
>Low – Trust
Liked this slightly more than “I Could Live in Hope,” but not by a very wide margin. I enjoyed the post punk influence at the beginning, but some tracks were definitely not justified by the 7-minute length.
4.5- Thomas BARELY beats my own mother and moves on!

Damo’s Bro
>Woe, Ye Demons Possessed
After the first half, the songs turn into droney noise (in a good way) to droney noise (in a bad way).
6.5- Transcendental Black Whatever moves on BARELY!

GFR’s Mom
>The Crystal Method – Vegas
Didn’t actually hate this, but it was so damn repetitive with the same fucking bass and arpeggiator throughout. Could’ve been like 15 minutes long honestly.
3.5+ GFR’s Mom still moves on damn.

Nyar’s dad
>Milton Nascimento – Minas
I’m not sure how much I enjoyed the more simple moments, but I really enjoyed the fuller-sounding jazzy/proggy moments in this. A lot of life is in this but I’m already dead.
6.5- Nyar’s daddy moves on!

Moregwessor Movenglut
>Laurie Anderson – Big Science
The biggest things come in the most minimal packages. A bit empty feeling at parts but overall very endearing synthpop.
7.0+ Moregwessor Movengluts on!

Sshx
>Spacemen 3 – Playing With Fire
I don’t know what it was. Was it the drone-y non-songs that seemed to last hours though being just a few minutes? Was it the lack of any sort of building at all? Was it my personal shitty taste? I don’t know, but even though I’ve enjoyed a good deal of Spiritualized’s output, I just hated this. Without the last two tracks, this could’ve been like a 1.
2.5+ MoonJacques moves on!

Misha the Handsome
>ゲルニカ [Guernica] - 新世紀への運河 (Shinseiki e no Unga)
I think my biggest complaint about this album is actually that it’s far too short. There are a lot of fantastic ideas here that feel only half fleshed out because the songs were restricted by their often sub 2 or 3 minute length. Otherwise, there are some fantastic pop/classical tunes here!
8.0+ Misha moves on!

HeyAnon
>Dean Blunt – The Redeemer
Some good sample work here, but I just find it hard to get enthusiastic about something so unenthusiastic and seemingly effortless.
3.5+ Are You Insanity moves on!

Tripfriend ots’s roommate
>El-P Cancer 4 Cure
A couple alright tracks with some damn good rapping, especially the track featuring Killer Mike, but the beats were so unappealing to me. Reminds me of some FL studio shit yo. A couple tracks featured some good sample work, but the beats and the mediocrity of it all just killed it.
3.5- Triangle easily moves on!

I’M FISH’s backlog
>Xiu Xiu – Xiu Xiu Plays the music of Twin Peaks
Love Twin Peaks. Like Xiu Xiu. They did a fantastic job capturing the atmosphere of the show. Noisey and ambient and not necessarily every track was an improvement, but almost none were “worse” than the originals.
8.0- my um…backlog moves on? Yay? Sorry Damo that you got beaten by something that isn’t even a conscious being!

Nat Dad
>Action Swingers – Quit While You’re Ahead
Pretty fearce and intense noise-y garage punk, but I just felt like these songs were about half as compelling as they should’ve been. I wanted to be thrown into a garage and beaten up by this album, not invited in to watch Fraiser.
6.0+ Herb Guy moves on despite the shittiest review ever!

Andrew (friend)
>The Pretenders – s/t
It’s that one brand of New Wave I don’t really like. Wew. I enjoyed the few singles I’ve heard before + the jangly guitar tones, and it was too uninteresting to be bad or good. It succeeds very well in mediocrity, giving my pal Andrew a big fat L
5.5- Kevorkian moves on!

Anonymousé
>Mortiz Moszkowski – Piano Concerto in E, Op. 59
Enjoyed this much more than I expected. Slow building and satisfying piano music. I don’t have much to say about this other than I enjoyed it and idk where to find the correct issue of this on RYM if it even exists. I had to listen to another piece by Ignancy Paderewski because I think this came bundled with it in one album which is the only place it exists with. Dumb side note but this was great!
8.0+ Anonymousé moves on!

Filthy McRottenDude
>White Room by the KLF
Didn’t like this as much as Chill Out. Much more upbeat and dance-y, and sometimes it plays this pretty well, but not always. Plus, every other track begins with “YOOOO KLF IS THE SHIIIIIIIIIT” lmao.
5.5+ Filthy McRottenDude moves on!

Jesse
>Nana Grizol – Ruth
Poor man’s angsty ITAOTS is still pretty darn good.
6.5+ Jesse moves on!

Tripfriend ots
>v/a – African Scream Contest
wew. This was fantastic. Now this is a psych scene I would love to dig deeper into. Grandiose and loud.
8.5+ I really liked Hasture’s rec but this was amazing. Sorry man. Tripfriend moves on!

Nate (friend)
>Matthew As More – Apocalypse Never
This rec is from a dude I know by a dude I know. Crazy all over the place noise rock with a lot of elements of plunderphonics and pretty damn good melodies. I’m not even building this up since I know this guy, I just really liked this release and how transformative this was. You guys should check this out: matthewasmore.bandcamp.com/album/apocalypse-never
7.0+ Nate, my boy, moves on!

Hibakushyo
>Dr. John – Gris Gris
Kind of reminded me of Exuma but with a more southern swampy vibe. Psychedelic and almost hypnotic sometimes (especially that last track), but I didn’t much care for his mix of his voice and the backing vocals + I felt he was much more tame than I would reckon.
6.5+ GFR moves on!

Ethy Boy
>Flower Travellin’ Band – Satori
This was great. Gave me some serious early heavy psych/Sabbath-esque early metal vibes. The flow, the atmosphere, the changing atmosphere…it was all great!
8.5+ Ethy Boy moves on!

S
>Claude Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal – Suite for Flute & Jazz Piano Trio
A lot of really full and bright soloing here, and it sounded very full for just four instruments. However, there were a lot of “background-y” moments where it lost my attention constantly.
7.0- Yamir moves on!

Comet on a Bus
>Chad Van Gaalen – Soft Airplane
A bit cheesy with some childish writing, but the attitude and large array of instrumentation reminds me of what made me love indie when I was younger. Childish and fun pop music, but nothing beyond that really.
5.5- Eruditey moves on!

Mishu
>Biosphere – Substrata
I’m not super huge into this brand of ambient, but I did enjoy the natural feel to it, as well as the tracks that were a bit more detailed and textured. Very lonely and mellow, but not particularly interesting to me.
5.0- GFR moves on (again)!

Reglob
>Taake - …Doedskvad
The definitions of ups and downs. Parts V and III were killer. Ya gotta love that continuity and building crescendos. Flirted with half-assery too much and the last two parts were nothing special at all really.

>Lupe Fiasco- Pharaoh Height mixtape
this was really good lupe, but the beats were lackluster. I kind of like the repetitive sample of the woman saying the word "pharaoh" throughout, and there were some killer lyrics on this (with lupe's political views clearly represented, as usual:
Uh, Bernie Sanders need a Nike deal
Then I might consider that, he might be real
If Phil Knight, knight him then I might like him
Until then children, enjoy the white icing on the cake
Cake, cake, cake, cake [sounds like K, KKK])

>Edgar the Beatmaker (King Krule)- Baby London EP
a low-production series of complete songs that sound like he's just working on his craft without a specific vision in mind- I could describe this, as compared to his discog, as like comparing an artist's best sketchbook pieces to their full pieces. a little free-er, and in some ways, preferable. The second track had a great sample of Archy talking on the phone to someone trying to get him to upgrade his phone. loved it.

>she's spanish, i'm american- s/t ep
don't let the basic, cheesy art fool you. or maybe, do. it's pretty relaxed indie pop, with some bossa nova influence. male and female vocals, and it's cozy as fuck. simple, but good. recommended to fans of the Sea and Cake

>After Dinner - Paradise of Replica

I first listened to this awhile ago, but I wasn't that impressed. On a whim, I put it on today, and I must say that it suddenly made far more sense. It's thirty minutes of some of the prettiest female vocals I've ever heard on top of some rather strange instrumentals. It's very good; definitely check this out. The title track, Ka-No-Pu-Su-No-Ha-Ko, and I'll Just Go Birdwatching were my favorites.

>I have normie friends, but I never really have a desire to participate in what they do
it really depends on how "normie" they are desu

I have some friends who are fairly "normie" but they're pretty fun to hang around because we've been friends since grade school, we share some similar interests when it comes to shit like vidya and comic books, we can have nice talks that get pretty serious or personal

however, discussing a lot of music, a lot of film, a lot of literature, fetishes and other shit like that can be less enjoyable since they don't tolerate the stuff as well as my more "out there" friends
>>
>>64596503

You could just let the top 32 move on so as not to let people with a 7.5+ (*cough*me*cough*) lose round 1 while letting people with actual 4/10 albums move on because of a 2ez matchup. But hey, if you want shitty recs from people with subpar taste, go ahead I guess~
>>
>>64597749
That'd be lame
You're just mad because you lost
>>
>>64597791
How is it lame to have the best move on? Simply eliminates luck from the competition, which is literally always a good thing.

Yo, I was at the office doing work, so I left this unattended.
What struck me about Babymetal was the weird mixes between electronic, metal, and jpop, and somehow still manage to have each song I listened so far identifiable.
I don't think I would recommend this to any fan of each genre, but for people who's into weird experiments with music like me, I feel it's a must.

>>64595846
I have some mixed feelings towards electronic. I personally like it instrumental, but lyrical is a russian roulette, either love them or hate them.
I will check your recommendations at home, and be sure to give feedback once I listen to it. Thanks a lot.

I came to accept Dubstep after a long time too. at first I hated it, but ended up being pretty good to have in the background while you're busy with something else.

This thread and what I skimmed from the last one has plenty of recommendations for stuff I didn't even know it exist, so imma bug you with recommendations in the future for sure.

As for my drawings, I did a comic for almost 5 years, that I want to wrap up soon, that had this stupid gimmick of having strips titled after songs I like, but since there were no boundaries on genre or language, the playlist can come up as beyond salvation to some.
Anyway, I'll post some personal recommendations later.

Tim Buckley - Starsailor

Sometimes, I wonder why it takes me so long to listen to great albums. This is one of those moments. Such a great fusion of jazz, contemporary folk and the avant-garde. I also have to mention Buckley's voice of course. It's a pretty interesting voice that I'd honestly believe would belong to a young black man if I didn't know he what he looked like. I enjoyed this a lot. 4.5/5.

The Church - Starfish

This was nothing really special. To me it was just average post-punk with average songwriting and not much special. I don't think it's bad though. It's just ok. 3/5.

Nam June Paik - Works 1958-1979

Well, this wasn't as good as I thought it'd be. I really enjoyed the sample manipulation on here but felt that the long pieces were, well, too long and got pretty monotonous. If the sampling manipulation went on longer and the long pieces didn't go on for more than at least 10 minutes, I'd think this is good but for now it's just okay. 3/5.

if you want to be confused about something, can't you be confused about the multitude of pipes and different bongs and whatever that are all for smoking

vaping is thought to be healthier than smoking since most of the damaging substances found in tobacco/weed smoke are formed through oxidation (the smoking). when you vape, you essentially heat the tobacco/weed without burning it, producing a vapor which contains the active substance, without actually burning the plant mass, and thus forming fewer carcinogenics/CO/NO/whatever.

>Henry Flynt - You Are My Everlovin'
I could listen to this title track all day. The drone is relaxing, but it's the fiddle overtop of it that steals the show. Second track doesn't do much for me, unfortunately; without a backdrop the instruments fucking around just don't keep my focus, and neither instrument is as attention grabbing or interesting as the fiddle in the first track. I haven't read Flynt's essay about this, but I plan to sometime. 3.5

>Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
I've dabbled in Aesop heavily in the past, and on all his others albums the focus has been purely wordplay. This album is much more autobiographical, telling stories about his life up to now. "Rings" is still fantastic, and "Kirby" might be the best song about a cat I've heard, period. Some unnecessary songs, but that's a given with rip-rap. 3.5+

>Anohni - Hopelessness
This sucks. The government-oriented political lyrics make me feel like I'm reading a twitter feed from 2013 or '14, and the Hudson Mohawk/OPN production they've been hyping up ranges from nothing to write home about to bland pop mush. 1.5

>Angelo Bottle-a-minty - Twin Peaks
I've actually never watched Twin Peaks, but even without nostalgia swaying me towards it I loved this. The dark ambient tracks are creepy, the Julee Cruise tracks are beautiful, the jazzy tracks are cheesy goodness, it's all great. 4.0 Really looking forward to the Xiu Xiu version, either later today or tomorrow.
