Here's a song I recently finished writing. Not a great take since I'm still kinda figuring it out but whatever.

For one thing, sing with an instrument or backing track. Solo acapella stuff like that always sounds pretty silly to me. But anyways, not a bad voice at all. I will say that you might wanna work on dynamics a bit. You pretty much sing at the same volume throughout the whole song, and learning how to adjust that appropriately can usually help a lot with you overall tone.

Really nice dude. I've been listening to so much Bryter Later lately for some reason. Such a fantastic album

Or if that's not your style, how about some chordal jazz improvisation:

I made some noise. I ask that only true patricians that can appreciate the tone and distinct flair of my Music rate this.

Being completely honest

I really like the guitar chords, the arpeggios at the beginning and end we're lovely and the rhythm in general is nice.

On the other hand, I dislike your lyrics and I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics. Still, it's much better than 90% of stuff on here - get a singer man!

not a huge fan of the vocals*

I've never really listened to any of this type of music. I guess I'll admit to not understanding it very well. What draws you to the virtuoso stuff? Is it the thrill of mastering something?
Not trying to insult you; my own guitar skills are laughable.

Case in point:

Is anyone even going to see this

I wrote this in 5 minutes at 5 am it doesnt have a name yet
>>
>>64573085
Sounds like shit. No direction, no melody, no taste. Just permutations of rote patterns without understanding what the notes mean.

>>64573315
A little better, but still just sounds like you're wanking off. Jazz is not code-word for non-sensical. It feels like you don't understand why you're playing the notes you play, like I said above. No structure, no message, no information is being transmitted. Music is a kind of language, used to communicate meaning. Here you have sound but no meaning. No grammar, no syntax, no vocabulary.

I really hate to be so critical but please go back to the drawing board and try this simple exercise: play a simple major scale up and down, but swing it to a beat so that each note sounds meaningful and intentional. While playing up, you can only play the same note or the note above. While playing down, you can only play the same note or the note below. Here is Victor Wooten playing this kind of exercise on bass: https://youtu.be/vxwVCYC0Y1s?t=5m8s

Listen to how purposeful his notes sound, even though it is just a major scale up and down.

You have a lot of technical skill, but you're squandering it on bullshit. There is nothing I hate to see more than a talented person squander their gifts. Spend some time and develop your timing, your note choices, etc. Ignore patterns, try to break out of your finger habits, and try to play MUSIC. Stop masturbating on the frets, for the love of god.

Different person, but thanks for posting that video. Really pleasant early morning listening :^)
>>
>>64573981
Glad you enjoyed it. Victor Wooten is one of the most genuine musicians around. I feel bad for being so harsh to that other guy but I just hope the criticism strikes a chord and sparks some development. He's a very talented instrumentalist who I hope will learn to be a musician. Victor Wooten, on the other hand, is first a virtuoso musician, and second a virtuoso instrumentalist.

Damn, I thought it would be obvious I was just fucking around and having a wank in those clips, I didn't expect anyone to actually critique it

Here's something of me actually trying to sound good:

Thank God. Good stuff. Wish it was a genuine vocaroo and not an uploaded multi-track recording, but it's good. You have no idea how glad I am to hear my criticism was mistaken.

In the interest of fairness and transparency, here is me playing, so you at least know a little about who was so judgmental: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0BrUHWosEzp
