>thinks music is quantifiable
>thinks saying "it's a 7/10" means anything
what's the obsession in current culture to rate things? a friend of mine recently described a social experience as a "5/10 experience" and said that watching an acclaimed movie would probably be at least a "7/10 experience" and therefore more worth it. obviously this is flawed, there are many differences in what it means to watch a good movie alone, and socializing. the positives/negatives aren't quantifiable. the same goes with music. what's the obsession with numbers for things so much more complicated?

I agree with you anon. I don't like the notion of "utility" and that enjoyment should be graded and constrained into a numeral scale. It takes away from the magic of the experience. You also have good taste in girls.

numbers should always follow a detailed review of the music
the numbers are for dumb people who can't read and for people who want to rank music by quality

That girl's tits are a 10/10

It's true that things can be qualitatively different, but I disagree that you can't compare them because of this. I can definitively say that I would rather hear a cool song for the first time than eat a really good sandwich, for instance.
I can say I enjoyed one thing more than another, because what I'm scoring isn't the thing itself, but my enjoyment of the thing.

Quanfitication is inherent to thinking, you idiots. Every time you choose one album over another when you pick your next listen, you are it x/10 such that for for each other album xn x > xn.

I think this is true. the systems most people use to rate things are inherently flawed by your example though, because that's not how most of us rate things (at least I don't).
for example, after a hard days work I really enjoy a RYM 6/10 album to relax, whilst I on a lazy day will listen to my RYM 10/10 album and just let it soak in. are you proposing that an album rating therefore is relative to your mood? that my favourite album, a RYM 10/10, is lower than RYM 6/10 on a day on which I prefer a RYM 6/10? while it's a working system, that's not how music is rated. if you're referring to the my original post, I suppose he could've been working within your system - that creates a whole other problem about how there's no defined rating system and therefore it means nothing. as long as the system is undefined, it's completely pointless and counterproductive

Who is this splooge scrooge?
>>64561546
I don't like the tone there, fellow. You can use ordinal utility without cardinal. Assigning numbers to art is wrong.
Tits > Ass
>>64561546
Not at all. I just look through my library, see something I'm in the mood for, and play it. Not much thought or decision making goes into it, it's just whatever I happen to see or whatever I have a specific impulse to hear.
