i didn't like a lot of the material, in fact none but the Carissa's Weird track stood out to me, but sshx's mix was more well put together and consistent (though i'm thinking all too consistent) than moonjacques's, which kinda seems just like a random assortment, again sans real standouts

Really? I thought Thom's singing was a bit clichéd, in delivery and lyrics, but the rest of the song was pretty good. The sharp string playing was especially nice. I suppose the vocals were so high in the mix that it really could bring the song down if you were annoyed by that.

That is to say, I certainly did enjoy this quite fair amount, but it's more like a weird mix between a pop album and an ambient album (it's not an ambient album, but the lack of real standouts and how everything just seems to flow into each other reminds me of ambient). It's all very pleasant, though, except some tracks try to emulate a spooky sound and fall flat. Almost a 3.0, but not quite. 2.5+

It's fine, really, but don't knock on my door with that deep funk shit again, I get the idea, I'm kinda ok with it, but it's something that fundamentally seems to be ok and nothing else. 2.5-

Runs an idea into the ground, but at least the idea is nice enough to make the album good regardless. The result makes for a seriously nice listen, but when the gimmick of looping an old songs to create a new song keeps repeating itself, you start wondering what's it really all for, yeah? Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Grand Opening and Closing (2001)

There are a few moments here where there's a really cool mixture of experimental soundscaping and weird-ass metal riffs, but sadly these moments are few and far between compared to both the meandering industrial pastiche bits and the Patton-esque, absolutely horrendous freak out bits. The industrial bits are actually kinda cool, but when it goes full Patton it just becomes unlistenable. Shame, because there are a lot of good ideas and some good execution here.

John Coltrane - Giant Steps (1960)

The drums on this are really good, the piano is just okay. Coltrane's sax is kind of underwhelming and especially at the beginning and end it goes nowhere and is too meandering for my tastes. It picks up a little in the middle, but like I said, drops again at the end. A shame because a lot of the playing is really nice.

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
More fun and memorable than their first two, which were solid. Feels like something genetically engineered to mimic the steely dan sound with maximum hooks and funkiness. Feels a little too clinical/constructed in a couple places. At one point in "with a gun" all the pieces seemed to un-gel and I could tell every instrument was recorded separately. Ruined the immersion. But fun and exciting overall. 3.5
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
I'm never too excited about ambient but this was enjoyable. Not tedious, kept me engaged. /mu/'s only thoughts on it are "Zeit is their best" and I think this is the first ambient record to make me want to explore further, so I'll check that out. 3.5

Tried giving Frank another shot after being bored by In the Wee Small Hours, but this didn't really do anything for me either.
His style seems very formulaic, which is probably just be a product of the time, but it sure doesn't hold up. Most every song features a swinging big band accompaniment to Sinatra's nonchalant singing. About two minutes in, the band crescendos with some horn fare and he sustains a loud high note to close out the song. None of the tracks really stood out, but I suppose "You Make Me Feel So Young" has a rather enjoyable swagger to it. It helps that it's the first song, so it hits before the monotony of the whole thing rears its ugly head.

Sinatra's great background music but awful foreground. It's not built for what I want to get out of music, I guess. I agree that that album and the other both lead with the only great track. Unintentionally unfair. The other Sinatra I've had to listen to was no better, but no worse. Pic related is pretty consistently comfy though, and a different genre, so maybe you'd feel better about it

Stunningly pretty sometimes, really sappy and far too much like a shitty movie score at other times. I like when it's just simple piano work, but it just gets so overblown and cheesy when the other instruments get brought in. This style of ambient has been done so much better.

It's very interesting. Currently on Wild West Virginia. I think the super loud piano is a bit much but like I respect it on the other hand, like that's the point of lo-fi recording right? if the piano's a bit much, check out his 1990 album. it's mostly guitar and the bits with piano are toned down a lot. and if you like songs of pain, he's got like a dozen albums just like it, but all with their own unique quirks

I have heard some of his other records, my favorite song from memory is Story of an Artist, but idunno I think my initial peak fascination with him came around the same time I was exploring R Stevie Moore and Wesley Willis and I was just more drawn to those artists. People mostly mention Drum Thunder Suite when praising this album, but I think the other tracks deserve just as much praise. The drumming is (of course) phenomenal throughout the whole album, but the thing I like most is that it's so clear that this album is lead by a drummer. All the instruments sound very rythmic and that really adds to the dance-y feel this album has.

You should get a cheap harmonica if you haven't already. It's fun to sit on a bench and play, and if you put a jar by your feet you might get money. Acoustic guitars and concertinas can get you girls as well, but they're not as easy to lug around.

Well from my personal experience with Margaret she seemed to be a cool person. Shitty tea preference, but seemed to be a well-spoken and interesting persona.
Her stage performances are up in your face, which is great seeing live. I think that she is somewhat genuine about her performances too from the live shows I've seen.

Ground Zero - Consume Red
Bloody hell. This was fantastic. I wasn't sure if Ground Zero could make an album I'd love as much as Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Version 1.28 but they did. The build up here with repetition and droning sounds was excellent and I was engaged the whole time. I loved the noise, I loved the constantly repeating sax, I loved the bleep bloops and turntable fuckery, I loved the drumming, damn it I loved everything about this. 5/5.
