Devo

Are We Not Men? and the Hardcore Devo compilations are cool and all, but I don't see why they have such a huge following when everything else they did was kind of bad.

There's no use in explaining to you what you don't get. That's like explaining to a blind person what sight's like.

I would disagree with that. Seeing as I came away from this with two lessons:

-proge mon is kind of an asshole
-people like spiderland for the atmosphere, story telling lyrics, and because it was ahead of its time

Some people really can consider viewpoints that are different from their own.

That reminds me. Unwound is the biggest "so what" band for me. They're like a less austere Slint, a less powerful Fugazi, a less chaotic Polvo, less heartfelt than most emo bands; it's just a lesser everything and pretty dull in their later albums to boot.

Inb4 bait this album helped shape post rock with its dynamics. Saw slint live at the bottom lounge maybe last year or the year before and it was honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen. The only band I've ever seen that commands an audiences attention that well is Low. You could hear a needle drop during the quiet part of slints set. The loud parts were crushing.

I like the intensity, I can handle the repetition, the atmosphere can be incredibly, I find Gira's voice incredibly interesting, sometimes profoundly emotional (certain tracks on SFTB), they can be kinda pretentious, but there's something Monolithic about a lot of their work honestly.

If you can't stand their harder or newer stuff, here's some good pointers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWStaRmuXzY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NOc1Gnu18I

If you can't stand Gira's voice you can pretty much just say it's not for me.

The production is fucking amazing, and yes good production can make a good album, especially a hip hop album. It's so fucking maximal and grandiose, incorporates tons of features and still manages to have a cohesive motif and story. It has a wide range of sounds and emotional/hype tracks that all play into the narrative. Some great lyricism as well. I will say though that if you arent invested in Kanye's persona and the context surrounding the album you probably wont enjoy it as much.
>>
>>64540910
>if you arent invested in Kanye's persona and the context surrounding the album you probably wont enjoy it as much

The album is about his ego, his fame, and how hes perceived by the public. It was released after he left the country for a while because of the Taylor Swift incident and the South Park gay fish shit. The Kanye hate was at an all time high Its personally not my favorite or probably my top 3 fave kanye albums but i believe it is the magnum opus defining record of his career because of the events surrounding it.

The documentary is pretty standard fare, there is nothing extraordinary about it whatsoever. But if you're interested in the band, all the recordings they have of them, and just hearing the story behind the band members and how that lead to Spiderland is totally worth the watch.

I loved it just for that reason alone.

Same. Still not quite a classic for me, but it's really unique and a perfect capturing of a complex emotion you don't get from any other record. Everything about it, the plain production, the lyrics, the voice, the guitar work, the drums, it adds up to something that isn't quite like anything else I've ever heard. It really captures the feeling of the darker and stranger side of small town life the midwest. Like when I'm out on a drive and I pass through a rural town at night, it hits that vibe perfectly.
