When is Ibanez going to release this thing anyways? I'd take it in a seven string version.

I'm don't like it.

>>64522411
I'm guessing around the same time AAL releases their album.
It's probably going to cost quite a bit, seeing as their only fanned fret 7/8 is already around a thousand bucks.
I doubt they'll do a 7 string version of it though.

Well they call it 'tone wicker' but it's two switches, 'tone' and 'wicker'. The tone switch lets you bypass tone completely for a more full and loud sustain and the wicker switch adds this grainy sound for a more 90s feel I guess. I don't use the wicker much but the tone bypass option is awesome

Gigbags for guitars:

>guitars are light anyway
>just get any decent one, who cares

Gigbags for basses:
>can't wear them as a backpack indoors so you have to carry them frequently
>basses are heavy
>need thick padded handles
>need thick padded shoulderstraps
>need thick padding overall because you'll have to sit it down frequently
>all of this adds weight, basses are even heavier now

This is bullshit.
>>
>>64524666
>>can't wear them as a backpack indoors so you have to carry them frequently
You can wear them as backpacks, the only problem is if you're tall, you'll have to watch out for doors.
>>basses are heavy
Depends on the bass, Warwicks feel like concrete bricks but Ibanez SRs are really light.
>>need thick padded handles
>>need thick padded shoulderstraps
>>need thick padding overall because you'll have to sit it down frequently
>>all of this adds weight, basses are even heavier now
Because guitars gigbags don't need pads right ?
>>
>>64524740
I'm tall and I don't know anyone who can seriously walk indoors with a bass gigbag without at the very least having to worry about door frames.
*heavier than guitars, if you don't do chambered bodies or shenanigans like that.
Padding is less relevant when you constantly have it on your back.

Yes I know, I'm just bitching, but nobody prepared me for this or ever talked about this. Gigging as a bassist means discomfort and stress.

I saw a busker playing one years ago in Dublin.
He almost had a banjo picking sound.

>>
>>64525676
Honestly If you want it to sound like an lp, put in alnico 2, if you want max clarity in a true humbucker get something with oversized pole pieces or thickish rails, if you want jangle get something underwound, or possibly lipsticks, with brighter magnets. Those are sort of the basics. If you want something with p90 quirk and smooth yet rich sound, try a tapped humbucker, probably alnico 2 as well. If you want to pretend you've got a single coil without getting the unusual attribute of a split coil, check out gfs vintage splits (though they aren't real splits they sure sound like it).

That's the basics for me, I think any more detailed than than is irrefutably pure opinion, and moreover something listeners won't notice. There's a hundred options. Something to keep in mind: the humbucker is a design perfected in the 50s, there's no reason to go for something too expensive if you can get the same design anywhere. Only shell out if you're actually getting something special.

>>64525810
Inf can be hit or miss though.
Although your S series is Mahogany, it makes little difference when it comes to sound.

It depends on what kind of sound you want (more clarity, more output, less output, more vintage sound, more midrange, more bass), I generally pair Dimarzios with Ibanez.

I have been playing some slightly hot pickups and quite like them. I have one Jackson bridge humbucker on my Charvel and am constantly blown away by the range that comes out of it. mine is american and I don't know what might have changed when production was outsourced to Japan.

I also had some lace alumitone pickups in my Dorchester, they were interesting because they are 100% than any pickup you have ever used. they tend to be a love or hate them sort of thing. I liked them at first but as I got mor familiar with the guitar I decided to switch to traditional humbuckers.

pic is the alumitones
>>
>>64526155
What kind of capo is he using? His strings height seems to be sky high (which would be expected for bottleneck playing?)
>>
>>64526389
It might be kind of a minor issue but I really prefer pickups that are mostly plastic because they preform better out of phase. I don't use out of phase much But it's nice if you can reverse the phase for compatibility at least. If you have a metal pickup cover your pickup will basically not work out of phase. Unfortunately I also like the tone of thick metal shielding that doesn't cover the top of the pickup, ala bill lawrence, so what can you do. I really need to pick up one of those bill Lawrence pickups but why guitar is out of room.
>>
>>64526532
not sure but probably the dunlop elastic capo, it can do that. Keep in mind that's not typical for slide in general because you completely lose the ability to fret anywhere near in tune, but it's perfect for lap steel, or if you just intend to never fret.
>>
bumping with rondo
>>
>>64527590
Please don't.
>>
I'm thinking of adding a set of sympathetic strings to my bass. I think it might work a bit better than adding it to my guitar since my bass resonates more and I spend more time on the root. I figure I'll mute them and turn off the pickup when I'm not using them. But, I'm not sure about mounting them and tuners. I know I'll need a plastic shield and my bass will get a lot less comfortable. It's a jazz bass. Any ideas? I'm not thinking of putting bass strings on or anything, just normal as thin as possible strings. I don't think I'll bother with adding a buzz bar at first, too finicky. But I play with drones a ton and it would be pretty nice if I could get a more natural drone sound then banging an open string or using a looper.

Where will the extra strings be attached? You generally need more tuners for that and they need to actually be separated from the regular strings
>>
>>64527987
If you're interested in saving dough you can always buy "that knockoff" and get the frets leveled and pickups swapped. It's maybe a few days more waiting for the work to be done but you'll have more confidence in the frets and save a bit. Plus you can put whatever pickups you want in.

>>
>>64528050
I'm thinking like a regular electric "sitar", pic related. But I'm not sure I'll have the room, so I was thinking of making them shorter, but I worry they won't resonate as easily then. Now that I think about it it might be better to just mount them to a plank and put it in front of my bass amp and plugged into a different amp to avoid feedback. So tge amp plays it. That's what I'm doing with my 12 string right now though that resonates more easily.
>>
>>64528090
I'd rather save up and just get something better straight off the shelf. I don't mind modding, but I want it to sound good as soon as I get it. I have a bunch of strings lying around that I'll most likely swap out but pickup wise I'd rather not mess with for a while until I'm used to the tone.

Makes sense. It's hard to know what you want until you know what you can and can't get out of your pickups. Honestly I'd argue cheap pickups can do that just as well but I can see the point if you've already got a pretty good idea of what you want and want to "fine tune." Hopefully you can sell the old pickups when you upgrade.

>>
>>64529390
>What's the deal with Sandberg? Why not just get a Fender?
Because they're not Fenders, they actually make new stuff and they're made in germany iirc
>>
>>64529390
Sandberg gives you a shitton of options to customize your instrument. They offer other shapes than traditional fender-style basses, they offer other pickup variations, they're handmade by a small team in Germany as opposed to mass produced in some factory in burgerland and they're actually cheaper if you live in the EU. Their basses also come set up perfectly, with proper intonation and everything set to go and a super low action.
Sandberg makes better Fenders if you want them to and just other amazing basses as well.

They haven't really gotten a foot in the guitar market yet.
>>
>>64529412
Ignore, peeling calluses is good, blistering is bad. Well, not really good but a good sign. If you're blistering slow down and always pop them as soon as possible so they have a chance of healing instead of coming off.
>>
>>64527987
the MIM ones are built with higher quality parts, I have a 12 string neck on a guitar that has MIM tuning machines on one side and tuning machines that came off a VM on the other, you can plainly see the difference, the VM ones are janky, 2 of them developed some slack in them. The VM Jag I have has sharp ends on the frets, the edge of the fretboard is finished poorly with kinda gnarly sanding. MIM pickups generally sound really good, and some models have AVRI pickups in them, the duncan designed pickups in the jag are really hot and overly treble, I put some AVRI pickups in that thing and they sound a billion times nicer.

It's very common is jazz and blues. Lots of voicings to work around and it works well in jazzy progressions. Or even if you just want to hear what's on the high E string.

You play in a jazz bands and you legit can't see any transitions from that fingering?

Writing you off as bait. Sorry if you're being serious.
>>
>>64531747
i just disagree that it's easier to switch from c with that fingering to any of those chords.

>>64531774
honestly not bait. i would always play it with the barre and have never seen any of the other guitarists in my band play it like that either
>>
>>64531598
maybe you haven't seen it because usually jazz doesn't just use plain major chords, the 1 is almost always at least a maj7

but regardless, it's easier to switch chord to chord when your fingers are like that, there's too much movement if you just barre the strings with your ring finger. you can get away with barring it, but it really is better to just do it properly
>>
>>64531802
Really? for the Cb5 you just have to move your middle finger down one fret instead of lifting your ring finger and putting three fingers down in new spots.
>>
>>64531876
there are just so many instances where you barre, it honestly doesn't benefit anyone to use that fingering. like playing a c6 with a fifth string root, you barre all the way down so you get that g# on the e string. you can't play that using the fingering in the OP.

it's just not something that's really relevant after a certain point in your playing. you get good at switching chords and then it's just second nature. you don't have to actively choose which fingerings to use in order to make it a tiny tiny bit easier to switch them.

honestly the only chord i can think of which this would benefit are c9 and c13 and maybe the hendrix chord. and those aren't usually played after a c major
>>
I find it tough to play using my pinky a lot. Should I continue just using three fingers or is this a really bad habit?

there are plenty of reasons to use that fingering, it depends on the context and what chord you are switching to and switching from

I know people stick a volume pedal in the effects loop so they can play quiet but with the amp cranked, but can you stick a volume pedal in-between the amp and cab?

The FX loop is sort-of after the preamp and before the poweramp (with some little differences). If you stick a volume pedal in it, you're not lowering the actual volume, which is the one of the poweramp, you're lowering the strenght of the signal out from the preamp.
But, I am not well versed in pedals, so I don't know if that's 100% accurate, but I think that's what would happen. >>64534291 is right, you need an attenuator for that.

Musicians are universally retarded and don't know shit about their instruments. Blame the advertising industry for it.

>Tone
>Toneful
>Purest tone
>Tonewood
>Tone is in the fingers
>Tube watts are louder

That plus a general lack of electrical knowledge in the case of electric guitarists/bassists and you have the modern consumer base for electric instruments.

Also, guitarists are super conservative when it comes to musical technology. The rest of the audio world went to balanced low-impedance interfacing in the 60's while guitarists stuck with unbalanced high-impedance. That holds back the technology; people idolizing "guitar heroes" holds back guitar design.
>>

I like wooden guitars because I like wood.
>and im an engineer so sue me over my educated opinion
Personal preference, and if it works, dont fuck with it.
Personally I've played two solid body electric guitars, one traditionally made, from wood, nickel etc and another where the body was made from metal (aluminium I think though i cant specifically recall) and the natural (unplugged) sound was different just as there's a difference when you listen to them both play on a clean channel.
I should say at this point my friend had installed the exact same 9model, at least) pickups into both guitars, same pots, same wires used for wiring, he's a huge nerd so he did it properly.
Though, that being said, he has told me some people have said they cant notice a difference so hey, each to their own, dude.
>>
>>64536117
Playing both in a blind test I would give up 2D forever if you could legit pick each one out.

Ever wonder why people say rosewood is warmer and maple is brighter? Its because Rosewood is a darker color, and Maple is a brighter color. We hear with our eyes.

>>64535863
>>Tone
>>Toneful
>>Purest tone
God forbid we use adjectives to describe something.
>>Tonewood
On an acoustic it makes a difference, and on an electric too, but not important enough for the latter.
Also, wood is pretty, simple to work and abundant.
>>Tone is in the fingers
How is this wrong again ? Look at Steve Vai's circular vibrato, classical vibrato and the wide blues vibrato, they're completely different, and there's also the pick angle, position, and where you play the notes. Tone isn't entirely in the fingers, but they make a big part of YOUR sound.
>>Tube watts are louder
Yeah that's just retarded, I can't find anything to back that.

Also, a guitar's just a slab with strings, just play the damned thing and stop worrying so much about what's actually going on.
>>
>>64535863
>>64536461

>Tube watts are louder

The reason people say this is because tube amps when cranked like any amplifier will go past their rated wattage. The thing with tube amps is when they're cranked they distort musically and people desire this distortion.

When you crank a solid state amp the distortion is usually not as pleasing, therefore people assume they aren't as powerful.

Earlier when I corrected that guy about "underpowering" cabs I used a similar situation.

When someone puts a 150w bass head into a 200 watt rms cab, "hey nothing can go wrong right I can crank this baby to high heaven! "

They proceed to crank that amp, usually cranking the bass EQ frequency as well, pushing the amp to where even though it has a rated RMS of 150 watts, it easily spikes 350 watts when cranked and certain frequencies boosted. These 350 watt spikes absolutely shred the cab, but since its RMS is "less than the cab" they assume they blew it by underpowering it.

Sometimes. Best rule of thumb is to use your years. If your cab sounds like its going to explode, it probably is.
