>>64510277

>>64510154
Uncle Meat, or really Zappa's discography as a whole. All that cross-referencing, bizarre near-future stuff, scatological humor, and anti-addiction subject matter.
>>64510264
JUST
This, Amnesiac, or Soundtracks for The Blind. Depends on the scene.
You'd need to finish that book to answer the question op, I don't think anyone on this board can help you.
TPTB
They're both massive memes. They've both got some depth to them; some aggression; some theme-abusing. They're both a little bit too long. For both of them, the second part is more exciting, but the first half is better. They're both pretty fookin' good, but nowhere near as fantastic as the memeposting might lead a newfag to believe.
>>64510431
that's Ulysses
>Overlong, self-absorbed, masturbatory work by an artist who half of people despise as a hack and half worship as a genius, and has attained meme status to the point where no serious discussion can be had about it
MBDTF
Damn...

It's Abbey Road you plebs. Be honest with yourselves.
Be honest, no one on this board has read it all the way through
>>64510480
Oh shit thanks. There's even a "Know Your Meme" entry for it albeit not that in depth.
>>64510495
I have. C's crew fucks the shit out of Fackelman at the end.

Kid A

>>64510572
tfw Orin has a 1984-esque experience near the end.
Probably something by Squarepusher.
>dfw you find out American Football is from the same midwestern town as Dave
Its not my pick for the equivalent but at their core both are melancholy and sincere
The introduction to the book says its this, but I disagree.
>>64510154
>beloved by pseuds and young people unfamiliar with difficult art but superficially familiar with its popular perception
>defining quality is pretension
>the massive expense of effort by its creator is intentionally palpable (begging for approval)
>quality throughout is wildly inconsistent, usually poor
>could have 75%+ of material removed with zero impact on narrative or thematic content (i.e. lots of filler)
>mostly known for its status in popular culture rather than artistic relevance
>>64510460
Infinite Jest is post-postmodern. It's a conscious rejection of ironic insincerity and many traits characteristic of postmodernism.
what kind of music do you think DFW liked
>>64511203
Power electronics
>>64510460
damn...
>>64511203
He liked Alanis Morisette and dadrock
>>64511190
DSOTM would be a perfect album if it weren't for Money. That song brings it from a 10/10 down to like a 6/10 tbqh
>>64511288
This
>>64511288
>>64511356
>DFW fanboys love Roger Waters and DUDE WEED-rock
no surprises here
>>64511374
Not really. I think every Pink Floyd album after DSOTM is garbage.
>>64511203
He used to smoke weed and listen to James Brown in the early 90s
I love it when people who haven't actually read IJ get all pissy about it being discussed, it's a book that pretty much asks the reader to want to discuss. Stay buttmad non-finishers.
why is there so much DFW hate on this board
I guess it's not that surprising considering we've been overrun by redditors who listen to Kendrick and Tame Impala
clearly this
>>64510495
>>64510572
>>64510624
>tfw you try to have an in depth discussion on /lit/ after finally finishing it but nobody there actually read the whole thing
The ending was pretty satisfying but there are so many open ended parts of the narrative I want to discuss
Do you think dave would have liked death grips
>>64511569
where to find more art that has that late 90s style like OK Computer's cover
>>64510495
>>64511514
I suffered through every page just to let pretentious DFW fanboys like you guys know that it's trash. What part would you like to discuss? The embarrassing racial stereotypes and casual homophobia? The unintentionally hilarious Wardine Be Cry chapter? The exact repetition of descriptive terms which heavily imply that DFW forgot he already used them earlier? Pemulis's incorrect description of calculus during the incredibly irritating eschaton segment (along with various other maths errors)? The fact that DFW literally copied the superfluous chemical descriptions out of a textbook just to show off? The edgy DeLillo-approriated comedy about consumerism (just read White Noise guys, it's much more insightful and concise)? The unfulfilled predictions about mass media? The awkward half-assed attempts at feminism?
>>64511747
they're not like OKC, but the designer's republic is responsible for a lot of 90s design, including most covers for stuff from Warp Records
>>64510264
Reddit being reddit
>>64511968
fuck you
Wardine say her momma ain't treat her right
>>64511607

How did you time travel a year ahead?
>>64512617
Why Swans?
>>64510264
lol this is the most JUST post ive seen. have you just discovered the internet?
>>64512687
>lol
Get the fuck out
>>64511562
Have you not been to lit? DFW used to be circlejerked so much that it's actually contrarian to hate on him. He's circlejerked against since like 2014
how has no one suggested STFTB
>>64512774
>>64512617
oh wait didn't see this
>>64510449
no infinite jest is self-defacing, self-loathing, almost masochistic desu
>>64511607
dude check the archives. it's not that difficult of a book to read. loads of people have read it
>>64511773
>Pemulis's incorrect description of calculus during the incredibly irritating eschaton segment (along with various other maths errors)?
this was intentional and hilarious

>>64511374
>>64511421
you guys shouldn't be allowed to live
Dantes Disneyland Inferno
>>64513134
>this was intentional
There's virtually no evidence that it was. This isn't the first time DFW has been criticized for his understanding of maths by the way
>>64513278
I'm not saying this exactly proves it but here: there are two big errors Pemulis makes re: maths, spec. calculus; these resp. occur in footnote 123 and footnote 321.
>>64512026
ABANDON ALL HOPE
>>64511773
The videophone bit is a fairly apt metaphor for social media and it's not going to be surprising to see that part of the internet meet the same fate. Also it's baseball season and you can't watch a game without seeing virtually every aspect of it branded in some way, even parts that shouldn't be. Those are just two examples off the top of my head. It's a bit disingenuous to not at least call the book prescient. Were other writers and musicians (read: Radiohead) covering much of the same ground during this time period? Sure. But not as well as DFW did here.
>kate gompert at the end accepting the wheelchair's offer to watch the entertainment
damn...
White Noise by Delillo is good too
>>64510439
Finnegan's Wake actually
>>64511203
"The Big Ship" by Brian Eno was his favorite song.
I've never listened to Dreamtheater, but probably Dreamtheater.
Just the impression I get.
>>64511569
OK Computer is more like White Noise than Infinite Jest.
