mine is Jandek, obviously not for technical skill, but expressiveness

He was both but he got the name Snakefinger from his guitar playing. I recommend his pre-residents stuff with Chilli Willi

>>64485033
Oh, I read that the name was from his violin playing. I didn't know he's a guitarist.
>>64485013
I approve. Jandek is the type of musician I have to stay away from so that I still have the desire to listen to and enjoy other artists.

ha, I can understand. I'm either on a Jandek binge or in the regular mode, where I listen to other music

You mean aside from writing some of the greatest anthems of all time and The Prophet's Song?
>>64485303

Go away reddit

Great guitarist. Fuck these h8ters. None of them have probably ever listened to A Day At The Races.

Do you have anything to say other than 'huuurrr reddit'.
Fuck off tripfag.

What's your beef with Brian May?
I've never heard anyone convert classical pieces to guitar better than him.
>>64485470
He's a shitty meme guitarist who relied heavily on the pseudo-prog compositions of Queen to make himself look like a better player than he actually was. And a lot of his shit is emotionless wank
>>64485469
Tchavolo Schmitt for me
>>64485303
I didn't say "mediocre rehashes of classical music". I asked you a simple question. I don't see an answer
>>64485518
And just what have you contributed, exactly?
>>64485518
So you can't form a coherent sentence without the use of buzzwords.
It sounds to me like you just don't like Queen.
>>64485279
>I'm either on a Jandek binge or in the regular mode, where I listen to other music
I think everyone who listens to Jandek is like that
>>64485564
I posted my favorite guitarist much earlier into the thread and approved of several ones others had posted. You didn't even do the latter.
>>64485620
But all those points are very valid, especially him overrelying on Queen's rather pompous and overblown compositions
>>64485564
Tu quoque fallacy
I see you still struggle to find downvote buttons on this site
Can you get any better than Duane?
>>64484967
YYYEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH BABYYYYYYY!!!
>>64485684
I don't find Queen to be Pseudo Prog at all. They were a bombastic hard rock band with operatic tendencies. May fit in that well I think.
>>64485746
You can definitely tell they were attempting to simplify and water down the styles of symphonic prog that Yes and Genesis had cultivated in songs like Bohemian Rhapsody
>>64485798
Bohemian Rhapsody doesnt resemble symphonic prog at all, watered down or not
>>64485470
The problem is exactly that: he simply "converts" them without adding much. Queen is a band sounding pompous just for the heck of it.
It's not to say that Brian May is total shit. It's simply that he's one of the most overrated guitarists ever. People who say he was the greatest usually never listened to anything beside Queen. Because in the world where King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Genesis existed and made music, there never was and never will be any valid reason to care about Brian May
>>64485990
It definitely does, now you're just being ignorant rather that not knowing at all
>>64485992
Oh. I never said he was the greatest. He's good at what he does. Don't go putting words in my mouth now.

Hes not very good when you compare him to the guitarists from any of the bands he mentioned other than jethro tull (any pretty much any band known for its guitar work)
>>64486359
John McLaughlin did more with his album "devotion" than most of the guitarists in this thread combined....most
Josh Homme

>>64486423
I'll admit I have a soft spot for Queen as my Mom really liked them. I just went and listened to The Millionaire Waltz which I thought was amazing when I was a kid.
Compared to Hackett, Holdsworth, Fripp, etc: he's not that amazing. But he's not a bad guitarist. I guess that's all I was trying to say. And find out what Proge Mans issue with him was...

Cue technicalfags getting triggered
Since Fripp's been taken, I'll go with Adrian.
>>64489116
I wanted to name them, but I really can't say if they I'd say they're good "guitarists". Do they play guitars? Yes, sure, but I like them as sound creators first, guitarists second.
I always feel annoyed when people say Edge is a good "guitarist" for this reason. He's both a shit guitarist and a shit musician.
>>64489017
I tried to get into him recently. I really tried. After hearing Randy Rhoads, I felt I was ready for neoclassical metal.
I couldn't bear it. His playing it just boring. As boring as it's technical.
>>64489268
There's a difference between Thurston/Lee and The Edge. SY actually created a new way of playing the guitar in the same way that Hendrix did in a way. The Edge was literally like "muh delay" and RollingStone still think he changed how the guitar was played. The way I see it, SY get top-tier sounds out of their guitars, so they're great guitarists.
>>64489346
No arguing about that. Daydream Nation has been growing on me for years. Have listened to most SY records except I think NYC G&F, SYR series, Eternal and some other.
I was just saying that the way I understand the term "guitarist", it implies using a guitar in a traditional manner, which I definitely can't say about SY. With so many pedals, so much feedback and everything, it almost seems like the guitars were making sounds themselves. It's a very narrow term, IMO. I just prefer to call Thurston/Lee artists/musicians.
Of course they did some pretty standard rock too, but that's beside the point.
As for Edge, he's just a meme. The best of U2 was done by Eno, one has to listen to any other Eno record to realize that.
>>64488910
excellent taste f am
either this guy or micheal hedges

I agree, it should be part of the rules. We need a list of memebands that are banned from discussing here due to being reddit.
