I'm getting into jazz, started with bitches brew because I've heard its a classic. Recommend me some classic/staple jazz albums and some lesser known masterpieces.
Pic related (obviously)
>>
that's not jazz that's rock tho'
>>
>>64473912
Can you give me something more jazz essential then?
>>
>>64473869
Start with the essentials, like Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy etc.

>>64473912
It's actually jazz fusion, which is a combination of electronics and jazz. The genre emerged in the late 60's, and was pioneered by Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.

>>
>>64474012

>>
>>64474070

Here's the better one. It's not perfect but it's the best I've seen on /mu/

avoid this
>>
>>64474211
Sure, avoid some of the most popular and acclaimed jazz of all time.

Glad to see this in both of these images. This was the first jazz album I found myself able to really get in to. After that I found myself really enjoying Chet Baker and Bill Evans and then went from there

Start with the creoles.

He's my favourite saxophonist, but those blue note albums are not daring. He should be in the chill section.

Also,

>>
>>64473869
For more fusion, try

Miles - In a Silent Way/Jack Johnson
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters/Thrust
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
>>
Start with either Kind of Blue by Miles Davis or Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, those two are babbys first jazz tier but still really fucking good
>>
>>64473869
>I'm getting into jazz

Sorry to hear that. Jazz is quicksand; it expects you to consider more and more mechanistic improvs more and more creative, to the point that your range of listening narrows while you are convinced that it expands.
>>
I'm not OP but are there any jazz albums that are like Beirut by Ibrahim Maalouf? With that very chilled trumpet solo, just minus the guitar at the end.

Sorry I'm brand new to jazz.
>>
>>64480262
In other words, unless you see through the jazz scam from the get-go, your taste is going to be consumed by tracking the 'lol always unique always fresh' minor variations in a never-ending stream of similar jazz.
>>
Reminder not to fall for the Generalizations Guy troll. if you see GG remember to either just ignore him or respond with
>faulty generalizations
to remind him that nobody here is going to take him seriously when all his arguments are based on faulty generalizations.

Remember, no matter how tempting it is, you're only rewarding him by responding to him.
>>
>>64480386
>no matter how tempting it is, you're only rewarding him by responding to him

'Even if you want to reply to him, you don't, like, REALLY want to reply to him!'

One doesn't normally see linguistic manipulation so glaring.
>>
Hey guys does anyone know where this piano motif at the beginning originates? Pretty sure I've heard it in multiple places.

>>
>>64480442
>>64480386
(I mean, a cry of 'he makes generalizations!!' is a strictly null statement which says nothing, so it, again, basically does me a favour by filtering out people retarded enough to pay any attention to it -- so, again, be my guest, keep saying that. Sage.)
>>
>>64480457
It's similar to Watermelon Man
>>
>>64480480
>does me a favour

...and the whole board, as a matter of fact, too. Sage.
>>
>>64480510
>responding to him

you fell for the b8
>>
>>64480553
Hm. You think >>64480386 is baiting? Didn't think of it really, people who persistently post such warnings seem to be emotionally invested in their apologetics of choice (here: of jazz) hard enough to be a common breed... Maybe, though.
>>
>>64480509
Thanks, that's pretty close but not it I think.

really sick and tired of all the people in these thread recommending the same bullshit, which just lumps a ton of really specific sounds and concepts which only make sense in their context in jazz history as one a big ugly ratking of overrated crap

>>64474127
like WHAT THE FUCK is this list?

>bill evans
>grant green
>dave brubeck

honestly whatever /mu/ is just fucked beyond repair when it comes to jazz

and inb4 someone whines and says that I can't critique the reccs because they're popular, the issue isn't the individual popularity of the recordings, it's that it pushes jazz music into this retarded pop-music cult and prevents people from forming the most basic understanding of the development of jazz as an artform or how to listen to the vocabulary and sound of it.

Telling someone to listen to Art Blakey and Charles Mingus is liking making an egg sandwich and some sashimi for dinner.

Here's a list i posted in a thread a while ago that I think would be pretty good for getting people into all sorts of jazz.

John Coltrane - Ole Coltrane
Charlie Haden - Art of the Song
Cuong Vu - Leaps of Faith
Eyvind Kang - Virginal Co-ordinates
Miles Davis - Tribute to Jack Johnson
John Zorn - Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet
Chico Hamilton - the Dealer
Charles Lloyd - Forest Flower
all four Gateway trio albums
Stanley Cowell - Illusion Suite
Dave Holland - Prism

all of these clearly showcase both modern and classic jazz and make clear developments on the most intrinsic language of the artform in a way that will actually TEACH the listener how he's supposed to be listening, instead of handing him a pile of crap.

whatever, who cares, one guy can't make a difference, this site is already fucked
>>

sorry guys im on a lot of xanax right now and need to remember that i'm talking to literally children
>>
>>64481086
Can you explain to me how each of those albums make clear developments on the most intrinsic language of the artform?

Can you also explain how they do it in a way that will actually TEACH the listener how he's supposed to be listening?
>>
>>64481086
as long as you're sorry

thats jazz rock you fucking retard.

Listen to this...
It's my favourite free jazz album and in my top 5 jazz albums. Magical from start to finish.
Here's the download.
