I haven't played with granular synthesis yet. Any 3rd party VSTs you'd recommend?

Also, every time I try dropping a sample into Serum, it simplifies and ruins the sound too much for me to do much useful with it. I just stick to regular subtractive synthesis with Serum.

As this is a production thread can we not find a better quality file hosting site so we can share wav. files?
When I'm sending stuff to my other production friends we use wetransfer.com although I've not tested it out it looks like you can use a share link too, plus you can send any file format you like.
It might not be ideal though as I'm not sure if wetransfer host the actual file and you might need to download it's?

Wouldn't totally agree but it's undoubtedly a good platform and the most used here. Every form of digital upload compresses in some manner.

I did notice right off the bat lots of the hi's were cut from the track I posted. Could be sample rate compatibility? I don't fucking care anyway.

Initial thoughts are you need an ominous saw bass. Super simple but can give that type of expanded space your aiming for. I was going to say take the verb tail off the snareclap thing but if you had that synth it'd fit nicely. Good start for sure.

Great Bourne movie type shit. Try and embrace the glitchyness. It's a little empty right now. Maybe some really abrasive textures. Like glass breaking, some type of screech I don't know. Glitch 2 is free so if you don't have that already you should consider it.

This one is my favorite. I misjudged it at first because the intro sounds like complete garageband-tier shit. Once that first kick hits I'm sold. Good choice to keep this one a little less "musical" if you catch my drift, it fits the percussion and tone of the piece.

Does this riser make any sense?
https://clyp.it/q0p4q3r1
>>
>>64440354
Its the bass guitar that comes with Kontakt elements
>>
>>64440466
I'd say it'll sound better if you make the secondary riser synth much louder so that the two risers play off each other. Also I would mute the riser on the last beat of the riser so that its just the drum fill. That way there is more tension when the drop comes.
Also a final thing is that your kick is too loud compared to the rest of your mix.
>>
>>64440560
Also forgot to add this but white noise and a low pass envelope will really help to add energy into the riser.
>>
>>64440555

>>
>>64440694
Yeah man that sounds way better, good job. I would turn down the volume of the white noise though and put a high pass it around 200-300Hz. White noise is mostly used in this genre as background texture so you don't want it drown of the other more important elements of your mix. If you are feeling tedious you could use an eq to slightly cut the frequencies of in the white noise that clash with your synths but that isn't really necessary.
>>
>>64440985
Yeah I didn't EQ the white noise at all, but I did it after posting.
The supersaw has white noise in it, so I think I'll duck some high frequencies from the white noise riser when the supersaw hits.

As for your clip, add break in the drum loop (silence, not drum breaks) after every 8 or 16 bars and in every 16 or 32 bar,, remove the 4th beat.
I guess what I'm trying to say is; break up the drums a bit. They're pretty boring.

Nope. I have done though, they're running through various patches to make them sound percussive and some quite ambient and granular.

Basically I have one contact mic that runs to my friends laptop where he is running a max patch with procedural audio, when triggered it changes the key of his work. I have a friend with a stylophone running through an arduino with pressure sensors made to have a ctrlout so that pressure makes the stylophone change pitch and effects an LFO. Also have the frequency of a band pass on my laptop affected by the pressure sensors and pitch he is playing with the stylophone. It's a mess of sensors but worked out quite nicely.

I wish we were allowed to just trigger midi.

If you increase the number of kicks during the riser, anything thats sidechained to it will just completely disappear behind the kicks.

well personally i wouldn't record outside with a condensor. you're asking for handling noise, wind noise etc unless you put it on a stand and use a deadcat. I've done it before before i got my shotgun mic.

I'm using Reaper. I have a time signature change and when it happens it fucks with the feedback from the previously playing tracks and slows it down suddenly creating sci fi like lazer beam shots that echo. How can I get rid of it so it's a clean transition?
>>
hey /prod/ so I'm going for a retro/analog dreamy kind of sound like this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMt2shWPaOw

my plan of attack was to put a vocoder and saturator on everything and this is what i have after about an hour

https://clyp.it/ao2vuyhw

it's sort of along the right lines but how do i make it have that ultra creamy texture like the youtube link?
>>
>>64453377

im afraid to listen but i will
>>
>>64453400
lol it's not what you think..hopefully
>>
>>64453344
that's nothing to do with reaper or anything. that's what happens when delays and feedbacks change time/speed. other than reducing the effects as you come to the transition, the only thing i can think of is, using them in a buss (which is more efficient anyway) and then automating their volume when it comes to the transition.

it's the same with delays when you change the rate. it's a pain and maybe it would be wiser to duplicate your tracks and have seperate copies for each time signature. that way you have say instrument A/B/C for time sig 1 with effects and a duplicate of A/B/C for time sig 2 with effects. it's the easiest way but not the most efficient
>>
>>64453100
It kind of sounds like the intro of Dare to be Stupid but with glitches.
>>
>>64453476
it actually sounds good as fuck i like on the snare it sounds like a glass breaking layered on top

i think the youtube link sounds kind of "dirtier" than your clip and im not sure how to get that

1. Assuming you put some reverb or delay on the sound yourself, just google how to automate effect parameters in Reaper and minimize decay or dry/wet as desired.

2. If it's an software instrument (VST) that has a tail you don't want, google how to automate volume or mute on a single track in Reaper.

3. If it's an actual audio clip decaying and overlapping with other tracks just cut the fucking clip retard.

>>
>>64453377
Sounds nothing like the texture from the video but it definitely doesn't sound bad. My initial guess for that band's sound is just guitar with audio chops. Effect chain most likely just gated reverb and very slight mid-freq kinda phasing plus lots of EQ.

the instruments aren't necessarily bad. it's literally a 4 bar loop of like 5 different things musically unrelated to each other

notes and rhythms within a track have inherent relationships to one another and you seem to be ignoring this

https://clyp.it/duprlqn4
>>
>>64455153

yeah thats much better
now you just need to expand on it past the loop
loops work if you're making hip hop or dance music but for something like this you really need to know enough music theory to start expanding a progression
try a few of the ideas here
the deceptive cadence is especially helpful
some good reverb would also take it to the next level

a project in my sigital media is "here's audacity, I want you to create a multi track audio file and explain it" I'm sitting there with my laptop saying to myself "fuck audacity!" but then "I've got a souncheck song (using reaper) I made last night and atleast 16 more at home I could just turn in how is"

But I record pretty much black metal so I decided to challenge myself and try a triphop beat, I could turn it in already how it is but I know I can surpass my greatest fault in writing with song structure so I'm working on it more tonight, I'll probably post it here later in the week when I turn it in.

This is where I'm leaving my track for the minute. I want to make some things more vhs crisp but I want some beats that are flubbery to. I'm a stranger to most vsts honestly, all I use in my own work is podfarm so doing non-metal is a new world for me.

>>64458015
I only think the vocals need some better equalizing and potentially recorded with a poor mans/every mans pop filter made out of a coat hanger and panthoes sock. I like this a lot though.

>>64458478

the intro humming should be enveloped down and I'm thinking the drum sounds after the first main one could be deeper and louder. I like it but I would like more drive coming out.

Most DAWs will look in C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins\ for installed plugins (Program Files(x86) on 64-bit OS) without you having to even tell them to, Ableton included, so if you're having trouble with Ableton finding VSTs you'll most likely encounter the same problem with other DAWs..

I usually create the VstPlugins directory before I install Ableton or any plugins (if I install Wavelab first the installer creates the directory) and most well-written installers just find it - there are some (like Waves) that require two installation paths, one in VstPlugins (for the Waveshell/loader) and one in the Program Files/Waves directory (the individual plugins) but there are usually prompts for these during the install. Any freeware that comes as a bare dll file just needs copied and pasted to the VstPlugins directory.

OS X VSTs go into the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/ or /Users/[username]/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/ - same deal there, follow the installer prompts and install (or manually copy and paste to) where Ableton is looking for them by default.

>>
What Max for Live devices should I download or buy? Just dived into M4L. Kinda lost.

Open to anything. Instruments, audio effects, midi effects, etc. Just been messing with a noisemaker and it's AWESOME.

Bonus points: Anything that may be used to make or effect sounds for dream pop/shoegaze would be awesome. Dreamy stuff. Pretty stuff. Whatever.

so equalizing is essentially setting what sound frequencies your track, or part of track, will be in. Bass will be on a lower channel and leads on a higher so that way they arent overlapping eachothers frequency and so it doesn't sound muddy. I mean your track wasn't muddy but find a video for equalizing in the program you're using.

Now essentially a pop filter is a cloth layer that stops the poppy sounds from going into the mic, so like breathing sounds that are exerted when your talk and the pop when you open your lips. What all of us have done is take some pantyhoes and a metal coathanger, make the coat hanger into a loop with an arm that you can wrap around whatever it will come off of (it can be your mic stand or your sisters cat or the mic itself)

again your track was pretty good, I mean that opening buzz before the guitar comes in you can really just use envelopes to turn it down or just cut those 3 seconds out. I'm going to bed but I hope the rest here can answer your questions, and thanks for the feedback
>>
>>64459550
I'm assuming that's like granular synthesis? I've been meaning to try that out. I'll look into it.

I'm butchering terminology I know but I'm making a future bass type beaf, just trying to emulate flume right now so I can learn some production.

So the chord progression for it sounds good using a piano preset, but when I flip it to a synth preset it gets muddy as hell.

And don't get me started on sidechaining it.
>>
>>64440694
If you've got that rising synth sidechained to the kick (sounds like it but maybe it's just a looping sample that happens to cut there) I'd turn that effect back a little bit because it's kind of intense compared to what comes after it. That's just my preference though.
