Closest I can think of is Apostrophe by Frank Zappa or The Album Formerly Known as 8-Legged Dance Moves by Bubblegum Octopus.
It would be cool if there was a concept album with a similar tone shift, but there aren't many albums that are both cute/funny and surreal to begin with, let alone concept albums.

That's all part of playing the game. Unfortunately, RPGs in the early 90's didn't have the best gameplay. For some reason that style's still being imitated to this day. Mother 3 spruced it up a little bit by adding in a rhythm system for hit combos, but I think my emulator was lagging or I wasn't getting the rhythms right when playing it. It has a better story too, in my opinion.

There are places you can skip and come back to and this is also a JRPG styled after Dragon Quest so I don't get what you're really trying to say about something to be expected.
