fahey was a true talent and an original voice, offering guitar suites that many if not most guitarists still try to live up to today (including particularly Daniel Bachman, as of late)
tim hecker is a sound collage artist interested int he overlaying of massive textures. this is neither a new idea nor an idea with interesting execution in Hecker's case.
ITAOTS is an interesting fusion of folk music and rock music with intriguing poetry from Mangum. it's an extremely personal message.
OKC is a sophisticated rock statement with a band with a strong comprehension of melody and harmony.
murmur is just so fucking mediocre
agaetis is pleasant but offers no new ideas
souvlaki is mediocre, offers no new ideas (Pygmalion is much more interesting)
michigan is an interesting cross between minimalist classical music and folk, similar to Illinois but with much freer forms
YHF does not have anything of musical interest but it's enjoyable enough

Even at the time ITAOTS wasn't special in the folk/folk rock/folk influenced by punk realm, stylistically. Great album for the other reasons you said, it's just not really that interesting of a fusion if you've looked at either side that much.
